A slew of new images from Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin have appeared online

09.20.2011

Steven Spielberg's THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: SECRET OF THE UNICORN is only a few months away from release, and though marketing materials have been steadily getting released over the course of the year, it feels like awareness isn't quite where it needs to be. The film will likely be HUGE overseas though, and perhaps that's all Paramount really cares about.

In any event, a bunch of new stills from the mo-capped film have been released online, giving us better looks at the WETA incarnations of the beloved Hergé characters. Check 'em out below and let us know what you think!

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: SECRET OF THE UNICORN - written by Steven Moffat ("Doctor Who"), Edgar Wright (SHAUN OF THE DEAD) and Joe Cornish (ATTACK THE BLOCK) and starring Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Daniel Craig, Toby Jones, Mackenzie Crook, Tony Curran, Daniel Mays, Sebastian Roche, and Gad Elmaleh - opens December 23rd.

Synopsis: Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures Present a 3D Motion Capture Film "The Adventures of Tintin" directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Steven Moffat and Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish. Starring Jamie Bell ("Billy Elliot," "Defiance") as Tintin, the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig ("Quantum of Solace," "Defiance") as the nefarious Red Rackham.

I'm lost on who gives a shit about TinTin. Even if I was 8 years old I would not want to see this. I was too busy watching extreme violence and gratuitous sex at that age. Like an increasing amount of americans I am too desensitized to laugh at clean humor.

Of all the filming techniques, I love motion-capture the least. Mostly because of the uncanny valley effect. The eyes might scare me - Tintin's fine, but I see some in Haddock. But apart from the eyes the movie looks beautiful and unique: An animated adventure with some film noir directed by Spielberg. Sounds perfect for my taste.

I don't think it will do huge overseas, there is very little buzz surrounding it. The only real chance it's got is Spielberg as he is probably the most beloved and well-known filmmaker around the globe

I'm with others . . .

. . . on the idea that even though TinTin might be beloved by Spielberg and Jackson from their childhoods, it's WAY too removed from the kids of today that need to be sold on the concept and characters. I'm Spielberg's age, grew up in the same city, and I was very culturally aware back then. But TinTin was never anything I knew or cared about. Kids today have NO idea who this is, and unlike Shrek or even the invented characters of Pixar, there's not the inherent cuteness or relevance to make it

Godspeed to the project, but I think you're going to see a HUGE bomb with this one.

Nope. I'll join your ranks. I think this has "massive failure" written all over it, due mostly to a non-existant marketing campaign and a ridiculous main character (in name, looks and creepy animation)

This movie will make some serious noise in Europe, if it's done well. Tintin's huge there.

Tintin looks a bit creepy. Maybe I'm just used to him in the comic/cartoon of having two black dots as his eyes. As for Capt. Haddock - Thunderin' Typhoon! I love his look.

It's a tough sell for a lot of people - you either give a crap about Tintin or you don't - but there's a lot of talent on board, and the more you see of the style, the better it looks - sort of CGI charicature. Can't see it making a loss at the end of the day, but it's down to whether the mass public will ever be as enthusiastic about the characters as the filmmakers are.

This is a good call. Myself, for example...I don't know anything about Tin Tin. All I can see is a pretty dorky looking kid with a dorkier hairstyle. So how is Spielberg going to sell me on this movie? Nothing so far has caught my attention or got me past thinking what a stupid looking character this is. Sell me on it, Steven!
