Agent Coulson Lives! Joss Whedon confirms that Clark Gregg will headline the new S.H.I.E.L.D TV series!

Oct. 13, 2012by: Paul Shirey

Perhaps the most disappointing part of THE AVENGERS movie was the death of Agent Phil Coulson.  The beloved and fiesty S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who began appearing in the Marvel Phase One films from the get-go, with IRON MAN and then again in THOR, leading directly to this past summer's THE AVENGERS, became a staple to the series of films and was the championed underdog until his fate was sealed with the tip of Loki's spear.

Or not.  Today, at NYCC, actor Clark Gregg, who portrays Coulson, was brought on stage to join Jeph Loeb during the Marvel TV panel, and after a short "memorial" video was played, the video screen suddenly shifted to Whedon, who announced that Gregg's Agent Coulson was, in fact, still alive, and made the official announcement that Agent Coulson will lead the new S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show.

"We all love Clark Gregg, there's no doubt about that," Whedon said. "From before we made 'The Avengers,' we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. … The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I'm really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don't stretch the bounds of reality."

"There was never going to be a 'S.H.I.E.L.D.' show without Agent Phil Coulson!" said Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios producer extraordinaire, who appeared behind Whedon, wearing a COULSON LIVES shirt.

"He's headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was." said Whedon.

"I grew up loving comics," said, Gregg. "One of the greatest things about it is that I got to connect with people like you, so thank you for being apart of it."

Agent Coulson lives, indeed.

Am I the only one

wondering how satisfying a SHIELD TV show would be? I mean ... no, I'm sure they have great ideas and arcs in mind and so on, but as a premise it just kind of strikes me as watching all the all the stuff in The Avengers that didn't have the Avengers. Like will each episode begin with Coulson walking into SHIELD going, "Guys, you should have seen what the HULK guy just did! Anyway, I'm gonna make some copies real quick. Anyone need a coffee, er?"

I know there's got to be more to it, I

the badass of this news is like a 2

This is fucking stupid. So when someone dies they can just bring him back? Stupid, it kills everything that happened in The Avengers. Yes, I read comics I understand how people died and came back. But what makes zero sense in the comic world will make just as much sense in the tv world. Shit idea

What about Alex's *1 year rule* on Movie spoilers!!!??

On the same day that Alex makes a plea about spoilers and lays out his good rule about waiting *1 year* before openly spoiling a movie, you have an article whose opening line is the biggest spoiler for that movie!!! "Perhaps the most disappointing part of THE AVENGERS movie was the death of Agent Phil Coulson."

Nice inconsistency :|

And so, even into the film era, comic book companies continue to maintain their time honored tradition of killing off characters only to bring them back :P

I wonder if Season 1 will take place pre-Avengers. That way Coulson gets to establish the show, which is a smart bet for Marvel since he's a fan favorite. Then once the other characters get established in the first season, Coulson dies in the Avengers and the rest of the cast takes over in Season 2 and beyond. The seems like the smartest way to have him involved and not undermine his fate in the Avengers.

YES!

A part of me feels this is lame because it ruins the integrity of his death but at the same time Coulson is too awesome to stay dead. Still I wish the post credits scene in the Avenger would have Coulson walk in and sit down to the rest's astonishment, telling him they thought he was dead and him just saying "I got better"

fuck yeah!
although I don't think this means he will be back for Phase Two. I have a feeling this show will either take place before Phase One or during it, probably before he goes to New Mexico

So are we going to see more cynical and bitter Coulson perhaps? Coming back from the death might have that effect.

I'm a little confused.

"We all love Clark Gregg, there's no doubt about that," Whedon said. "From before we made 'The Avengers,' we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I'm really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don't stretch the bounds of reality."

"He's headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was."

So does this

So does this mean that the show takes place in a different universe from the films after all, or was Feige just kidding around in the first statement? This article just leaves me scratching my head.

what it seems he is saying is that they were always going to keep Gregg involved in the universe somehow, despite Coulson's death, but to do so with him coming back to life or even as another character would stretch the bounds of reality, so they are just using him as the same character at a point before he has died. i.e., the show takes place before the movie.

I don't understand, because a movie makes a billion dollars, is this not considered spoilers for those who have not seen the Avengers?

lol i know, the same way 30, 40, 50, etc, yr old classic movies are considered by some to have already been watched by everyone. no matter the movie, there's always going to be people who haven't seen it. spoiler warnings, you either go with them full on, or why bother..

Undermining?

Just like Thor's random, barely-explained appearance in Avengers kind of undermines the climax of Thor and the destruction of the bifrost, Coulson's appearance in the tv series really undermines the whole motivation the Avengers needed to come together. The only way for this to not be the case is if the series takes place before the events of the Avengers or if Coulson only appears in flashbacks. I LOVED Coulson, but don't start resurrecting the dead and cheapening their deaths

I can see your perspective, but it's very much in keeping with the SHIELD and comic book tradition. No one ever really stays dead. I always suspected that Coulson had a good chance of living, since the end of The Avengers didn't have his funeral. I can't imagine that the one thing that drew them all together would go un-memorialized in the final moments of the film.

As for undermining his death; I don't see it that way. I see it as Fury acting well within his character by using

As for undermining his death; I don't see it that way. I see it as Fury acting well within his character by using Coulson's "death" as a catalyst to motivate The Avengers. It's actually more consistent with his character to do that. At that moment in time [Loki's escape, inevitable alien invasion], Fury would've done anything to get those guys to get their shit together.

As for the bifrost, Loki tells Thor (not in those exact words) "Father must have mustered up a lot of his energy to bring you to earth", probably hinting to magic or whatnot.

Loki tells Thor about Dark Matter... And the portion of the Peggasus Project where the Cube is detained at the beginning of Avengers is called "Dark Matter Project"...
Beside, he DID tell Thor at the end of the first movie that there were lots of other ways, to travel across the nine realms...
