Alien: Covenant will take place ten years after Prometheus

12.31.2015

At the end of PROMETHEUS, Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) take off in the Engineer's ship in search of the Engineer's home planet. While you might assume that the sequel would pick up not too long afterward, you'd be wrong. Collider recently sat down with Janty Yates, Ridley Scott's long-time costume designer who has worked on GLADIATOR, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, PROMETHEUS, THE MARTIAN, and many more. Yates will be filling the same role for ALIEN: COVENANT and during her chat with Collider, she revealed that ALIEN: COVENANT will take place "10 years in the future beyond Prometheus."

Janty Yates is already hard at work designing the costumes of ALIEN: COVENANT, in fact, she's already designed two new space-suits for the film and Ridley Scott has already signed off on them. However, that looks like that'll be it for new space-suit designs, except for the tattered remnants of the PROMETHEUS space-suit which David (Michael Fassbender) will still be wearing in the film.

In actual fact, Prometheus 2 is not so much of a space-suit movie, there are two different space-suits in it, but it is not a great space-suit movie, and we're only carrying on one look from Prometheus 1, which is from David the robot and he's just got the hangover of the Prometheus 1 space-suit, bits and bobs.

Considering that ten years has passed since the conclusion of PROMETHEUS, I'm very curious to find out what has happened to Noomi Rapace's character. She is set to return in the film but she hasn't been mentioned very much in any of the pre-release buzz; perhaps David isn't keen to share the Engineer's space-ship with her and she'll be our first casualty of the new film.

A synopsis for ALIEN: COVENANT:

Bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, the crew of the colony ship Covenant discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world -- whose sole inhabitant is the "synthetic" David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.

ALIEN: COVENANT is set for a October 6, 2017 release.

I've always thought they'd never make it to the world of Engineers. It's not something you reveal. It would have to be a godlike planet, and any depiction would disappoint many. Plus, what do you do once you're there? Go to the big Administration Building and knock on the door? To avoid it, their ship would have to crash, David would have to take over and steer the ship elsewhere, or the Engineer world would have to be in ruins when they arrived.

I still applaud Prometheus for what it tried to do and how much of a clever sci-fi it wanted to be - the execution wasn't great and the final product was a bit mixed up, but I look forward to seeing what they do with it next. Bit hard to judge based on the amount of info they have given so far, but more of fassbender and less of rapace's character I think is a good thing.

I really enjoyed the first one (flaws and all), but I'm curious to as why they set this ten years after the first one. I'm feeling that this is more or an Alien prequel than an actual Prometheus sequel. But I love the Alien/Prometheus universe and am excited to see how Ridley further expands and connects the two franchises together.

Prometheus 2: Alien 5: Paradise Lost/Covenent. The reboot/sequel/prequel to Alien sequel to Prometheus. First of a trilogy of four films. It's own story but directly connected to Alien. A whole new story but a [link] Oh just cancel the fucking thing already.

Step one: Don't bring back Elizabeth Shaw. That character sucked and her whole motivation/backstory was contrived and sappy.

I really liked where they were heading at the end of Prometheus--now it seems to be that they are trying to distance themselves from that movie to too great an extent. I'll still see it, but that's a bit disappointing.
