Buffy the Animated Series

A long time ago, Joss Whedon and Jeph Loeb were on their way to producing a "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" animated series but even with the entire cast of the original live action series involved, they couldn't get it on the air (they managed to get Fox Kids interested but the studio collapsed after a Disney buyout).

Recently, though, a promo trailer for the series has mysteriously made its way online and it's as delightfully quirky as you'd expect. What does Loeb have to say about this? He tells MTV: "Everything still exists — the designs, the scripts. It’s such a ‘no-duh’ project, so why the hell not? All you need is to draw it. Eight years ago, there was no fascination with ‘Family Guy’ or ‘Robot Chicken,’ but there’s an audience now that could drive to it. You can’t stand in the way of pop culture.” Click through to check out the trailer.

Extra Tidbit: Loeb had previously mentioned that one of the episodes would revolve around Buffy getting her driver's license from a demon driver's ed teacher.

Okay, there are a good three moments in that where I laughed out loud. That's pretty damn good for a spec pilot. Too bad it wasn't made. Coulda had some potential.

All I know is either DMV instructors are all demonic, or I sure wish they were, because they have to be the most boring people on earth.

And
Jeph Loeb is writing the animated Buffy series into the Buffy comic book as if it happened. I just saw the previews for the comic yesterday.

Looks like Loeb and Whedon are trying to push it into actually happening.

buffy's voice?
the reason it's off is because that's not actually SMG, it's Giselle Loren, the girl who did the voice for the two video games. The others characters are legit though.

I miss Buffy, and I always thought the animated series not happening was a shame. But now, I feel much better about it not falling into place. This teaser was horrible, focusing on the worst aspect of the first season of Buffy: her bad one-liners. I dunno, with actual writers from the show on board, maybe it would have been better than this teaser. But after seeing this, I can't really blame...

I still really miss Buffy. If this was somehow picked up today, I wouldn't be able to stop myself from watching it anyway.

Oy vey ... That was a little painful.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some "Buffy" (and "Angel," as well), but I'm not sorry the cartoon caved. While Giles and Xander came across alright, Buffy just seemed ... off. Like SMG had never done voice-overs before (which she probably hadn't). And what was with that vamp transformation? Or the library that looked nothing like the one...

And am I really so much of a geek that I'm nitpicking a cartoon?

Well, yes, I suppose I am.

You couldn't find a bigger Buffy fan then me...but this just never seemed like a good idea to me. I love Season 8 in comic form (and Angel: After The Fall as well) and as much as I'd love to have the actors once again playing their counterparts I really can't see a child's cartoon (at least in style it clearly aimed for children) capturing the depth nor the fun that the series had.

I'm sure it's only resurfaced after news slipped of Loeb writing Issue 20 of the series which features flashbacks in the style of the animated series.

Comics aside I'm sure we haven't seen the last of the Buffyverse on television, I still hold out hopes for Ripper to one day be made.

Late much?
Come on guys, this was old news two months ago! And as much as I want Buffy to continue, I'm more into a comic book which takes the story and characters forwards than a cartoon that goes back and fills in some really, really small holes. I say really small because the show is so tight as is.

Section ( 8 ), that's interesting. I hadn't heard about that arc and I'm curious to see...

Section ( 8 ), that's interesting. I hadn't heard about that arc and I'm curious to see what happens there. But what I really hope is that after season 8 is done, or even season 9 as a comic, Joss and the gang relaunch Buffy as a movie. Now that the characters are out of High School and Sunny Dale, there is more room for a new franchise. Something separate from the series.

Probably not that mysterious...
An upcoming arc of "Season 8" Buffy comic series apparently deals with the never aired cartoon. The arc is being written by Jeff Loeb.
