Awake trailer

10.29.2007
When I first heard about the concept behind the upcoming film AWAKE, I was disturbed. It’s an absolute nightmare. A man is put under anesthetics for heart surgery, but although he’s paralyzed, he can still hear and feel everything. I couldn’t imagine a major motion picture being made on this subject. I use the word major because it stars Hayden Christensen, Jessica Alba, and Terrence Howard. Would the whole movie take place during the surgery, or would it focus on the trauma endured afterwards? Now that I’ve finally seen the newly-released trailer, there’s a conspiracy element present that I didn’t anticipate, and the second half does in fact appear to be taking place in his subconscious, while he tries to figure out what the hell is going on. An out-of-body experience, if you will. I still don’t know how they’re going to pull this one off exactly, but it’s easily one of the most intriguing trailers I’ve seen in a while. And using Sia’s Breathe Me as the soundtrack (remember the song that closed out SIX FEET UNDER?) doesn’t hurt. That song can make even a funeral seem emotional. The film is released on November 30 and you can check out the trailer HERE.

This is definitely a great idea, but as Call me Indiana pointed out, Jessica Alba can't act. At least, she hasn't given us reason to believe she can..yet. But she might surprise us all. As for Hayden, well..he's had a few good performances here and there, but I'll wait to see the film before I pass judgment.

If you want to call this a rip-off (and I am by no means disagreeing with that) then it would be wise to call it a rip-off of the source material, which was an episode of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" (and also served as inspiration for King in writing "Autopsy Room Four") starring Joseph Cotten. He stars as a man injured so badly in a car accident that the doctors think him dead, but he produces a single tear to let them knwo he's still alive before they cut him up. They rip that off in the

They rip that off in the trailer, clearly.

Of course, I could be wrong about the source material, but as far as I know the premise originated on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents".

What's keeping me away from this film, though, are Hayden Christensen and Jessica Alba. I've always been a fan of Alba, but not for her acting (I think "Sin City" was the only movie I believed she was actually quite good in). And Hayden Christensen is terrible; the delivery of his lines make me groan because of how bad he is. The only thing this movie has going for it is Terrence Howard.

But it's still a COMPLETE ripoff of Stephen King's short story "Autopsy Room Four" - seriously, go read the synopsis anywhere and you'll agree. Someone can preach all they want about how everything's unoriginal nowadays, but there's unoriginal and there's ripping-off, and this movie definitely sounds like the latter.

It's a damn intriguing premise for a movie. Imagine having to go through that shit - I just get shudders thinking about it. However, I'm worried that this film might collapse on its high-concept (i.e. Click, The Number 23, etc.). And Jessica Alba, whose acting ability is so-so at best, doesn't help things either.
