Bill Murray threatens Mickey Rourke in the trailer for Passion Play

Apr. 11, 2011by: Niki Stephens

Not that anyone probably cares, but the newest trailer for PASSION PLAY is out via Vulture.

Well, I sort of care. The cast involved intrigues me (Bill Murray, Mickey Rourke, Rhys Ifans, and guilty pleasure Megan Fox), however, the reviews for it are brutal. Our critic, Chris Bumbray offered up one of the worst in my opinion, "'Passion Play' is a BAD movie. Astoundingly bad. Unfathomably bad. As bad as any film Uwe Boll's ever made, and then some." Ouch. Mitch Glazer (SCROOGED, THE RECRUIT) wrote the screenplay and directed on this project.

The film is doing a small limited release on May 6th, then 25 days later on May 31st arrive on DVD. I might see it if they put it on Netflix, but I can't see myself going out of my way to check it out. Witness the trailer for yourself below.

Synopsis:

"Nate (Rourke), a small-time jazz musician, is clearly a hard-luck case. Caught trying to break into a car, he is taken off into the desert where his assailant puts a gun to his head. Game over? Not quite. Stumbling into a circus pitched amidst the vast expanses of the southwest desert, Nate finds himself drawn to the exotic beauty of Lily (Fox), the Bird Woman. Lily is cold and dismissive; socializing with customers is not her scene. But it dawns on her that this gentle giant may well be her way out of a life of eccentric exposition. Nate is protective and understanding, and to him her aquiline beauty is a magic part of her uniqueness. As their bond deepens, Nate finds that his dreams of bliss are about to be thwarted by Happy Shannon (Murray), a cucumber-cool businessman with deep pockets and an eye for the bizarre."

Extra Tidbit: Note: The trailer says "Academy Award Winner Mickey Rourke". Did I miss something? Did I blackout one Oscar year?

Trust Bumbray on this - it's a BAAAAAAAD film. Many people I knew at TIFF walked out. I really should have. Easily the worst film I have ever seen at TIFF. Not only is it a bore of a film (with only a sporadically entertaining Murray performance to keep you from being knocked out), but the ending is stupendously, monumentally horrible.

The enthusiasm was fairly high at the beginning of the film but you could tell the audience could barely muster up any enthusiasm afterwards.

I still don't know what to think. The story sounded bizarre enough. All I know is I like Bill Murray as a gangster. But if a movie can get such damning reviews, my enjoyment of it will probably be more morbid than anything else.

Looks like a guilty pleasure

It doesn't look like a bad film, it just looks kind of ridiculous and cheesy. Feels like something you'd see get made in the mid-90's, not the late 2000's.

Academy Award Winner

I wish. As amazing as Sean Penn was in "Milk," I still think Mickey got robbed for "The Wrestler."

How the hell do they mess up and say Mickey Rourke is an Academy Award winner?!

looks interesting , maybe the new edit helped.

Murray is a great actor but I think it's a shame he's sticking to dramas and cameos. He clearly is a gifted comedian and I can understand that he wants to show his versatility but it's just a waste that he's steering away from comedies. I think the academy should just give Murray and Jim Carrey Oscars so they'd get back to doing what they do best.

Oscars are the last thing a good comedian needs to convince them to go back to being in comedies. Look at Tom Hanks. Besides, Bill Murray is not only a very funny guy, but one of the best actors working. Let him do what he wants.

Hmm. Kind of looks like a mixture of "Wings Of Desire" and "Mad Dog & Glory".

I'll let it fly, cause he should've won.

I don't get it...

it looks pretty weird and interesting to me, I'll definitely be seeing this!

The trailer looks promising and you couldn't ask for a better cast. I've disagreed with many know-it-all critics before, maybe this will be one of those cases.

I'll do the proper thing and still give it a chance, instead of forming an opinion on it based on other peoples opinions.

Looks completely uninteresting...

But I kind of want to see it just for how bad it is.
