Cast This: Shazam!

In 2019, we will be graced with a big screen adaptation of the DC Comics hero Shazam! The only real item of note that has been announced is that Dwayne Johnson will be playing main antagonist known as Black Adam. While the movie is still three years away, meaning a lot can change between now and then, it wouldn’t hurt to go to the drawing board with some suggestions as to who might take on the iconic character.

Previously known as Captain Marvel, Shazam/Billy Batson has been fighting crime on comic book pages for decades; Billy’s origins are similar to some other comic book favorites - he was orphaned at a young age, led by a mysterious stranger and bought before the ancient wizard Shazam in the Rock of Eternity where he is chosen to receive the powers of Captain Marvel. Whenever Billy says the word "Shazam!", a magical lightning bolt strikes him, and he becomes the adult Captain Marvel, though he still has Billy’s intellect and personality. Each letter in "Shazam" corresponds with one of the magical abilities Billy inherited from various Greek and Roman characters: S for the Wisdom of Solomon; H for the Strength of Hercules; A for the Stamina of Atlas; Z for the Power of Zeus; A for the Courage of Achilles and M for the Speed of Mercury.

When the character was rebooted in 2012 as part of the New 52, he was renamed Shazam and now Billy has to say "Shazam!" with good intentions to become the superhero rather than simply say it. Sounds like a lot of fun, doesn’t it? No actor has been announced yet to play Shazam, so let’s get to work shall we?

First on my list would be Armie Hammer; I personally think size does matter when you’re being matched up with The Rock. He may need to hit the gym but the 6'5" actor shouldn’t have any problem keeping up with the action considering his solid work in THE LONE RANGER and THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. He’s in need of a hit however, and what better way at giving that a shot than with your own superhero franchise?

The frustratingly good looking Joe Manganiello would also make the cut for me. He’s tall, dark, and handsome – the makings of a superhero if there ever was one right? He’s also charming and funny as seen in the MAGIC MIKE movies, or so I’m told. What’s holding him back from having a light actioner to call his own beats the hell out of me.

Then there is Liam Hemsworth; being the brother to Thor isn’t such a bad gig seeing how he got that HUNGER GAMES role, right? He’s done his share of action (EXPENDABLES 2, EMPIRE STATE) and could make for a great superhero I imagine. What do you guys think? Who could you see being cast when the time comes? What about TV Superman Tom Welling? He's no stranger to genre and to date hasn't really made any impact on the big screen. I've heard Jake Gyllenhaal's name being dropped in to conversations about the role, how would that strike you?

Who would you like to see take on the role of Shazam?

If only Warburton was younger. He looks just like the character. John Cena would be a good choice mostly because he can size up well against Johnson but it might be distracting. Maybe Krasinski would be a good choice.

Cena looks the part, but unlike Johnson, dude can't act worth crap.

John Cena is the only logical choice. Can't believe I never thought of that before reading it listed below in the comments, but now that I have that thought... It really seems like the only correct choice.

No I don't watch wrestling, and I'm not a fan of the character but if they casted Cena vs Dwanye Johnson, I would be there opening night.

Great Call on Joe Manganiello

I know this may be not traditional as he doesn't look exactly the same, but after seeing John Krasinski all jacked up in 13 Hours, and considering he has big child like face and big kid like features and personality traits, I think he could be great!

You're going to destroy me for this one but...

How about
Kellan Lutz ? Tall, handsome, muscular, can look childish/dumb (lets face it, Shazam is a kid in an adult body, so he has to be kind of dumb)...

I know this wasn't asked, but for the kid role, I would love to see Albert Tsai
I don't really have a good idea for Shazam so I'll just throw a name out there: Ryan Hurst

I think Jason Momoa will be a great Aquaman but I've always thought he'd make a pretty great Shazam. Shave his beard and look at his face. He's always got that kind of jolly squinty look on his face. But otherwise Channing gets my vote.

Joe Manganiello

I forgot about him. He was good in the half of that Netflix PeeWee thing that I watched.
The other guys have had there crack at stardom. I'd prefer to see them in bad guy roles now.

More of a Marvel guy, but alongside GreenLantern, Shazam is my favoriteDC character

Has been since I was a little kid and got reprints of some oft he original Fawcett comics (DC didn't originally own the character, Captain Marvel was the best selling comic book of the Golden Age/WWII era by quite a long shot, and DC gradually changed Superman, who was #2, to become more like Shazam... or Captain Marvel as he was called back then, in hopes of increasing his popularity. It resulted in Fawcett comics going under and eventually DC bought the character from them.)

Anyway, history lesson aside, before he was cast as Batman, I always thought Ben Affleck would be perfect for the role. I also second the idea of Patrick Warburton, although he's probably getting a little too old for it. Since neither of those are very realistic choices, I'll toss in an underdog -- Daniel Cudmore (Colossus in X-Men 2 & 3). I also like the Armie Hammer idea (he was my original pick for Aquaman), maybe Cavill tossing in a good word for him would help him land the part.

Confused

So does it have to be 2 people? Like the post says Billy turns into adult Shazam...so do we have to think about who it would be as Billy and as Shazam?
I am not a fan of the name Shazam.

moonrider, except for Captain Marvel is now called Shazam because Marvel officially owns the trademark to the Captain Marvel name (as a result of their same-named but totally unrelated character).

There's only one man who can play this role...

AND HIS NAME IS JOHN CENA!!!!
No but seriously I actually think he'd be great in the role. He looks the part. He's just as enormous as The Rock. And he would definitely pull off that naive personality of a huge boy-man. Anyone who watches wrestling knows he can actually act, not to mention his recent string of successful movie roles. He was hilarious on Maya & Marty the other day.

I know of Molale and agree with you 100%. Would have been better if this were 5 years ago before his hair thinned out but he
looks VERY much like CM. If chosen he'd have to workout like a demon! Might as well let Johnson train him!

Hammer... he would be great in the role. I love Lone Ranger and Man From Uncle and he is fantastic in both... Lone Ranger gets a lot of hate but I think it is very underrated. Shave off the 12 minutes of Tonto talking with that kid and I think it plays a lot better.

Not gonna lie - I really am not well versed in Shazam, so kinda shooting in the wind here but:

Is Karl Urban too old? He's got a good height so with a bit more bulk he could maybe face off against Johnson?

Well, that's my suggestion anyway. If not him then what about Zachary Levi? He's got the big kid thing going on.

I think the catch with casting Shazam is that you need someone who has a physically imposing presence, particularly when compared against Billy Baston. But you also need someone that can pull off the personality of a child, not a tough guy exterior. That's why I don't think Liam Hemsworth would work well. He's a decent action actor, but he plays his roles too tough. I would also rule out Jake Gyllenhaal on the basis that he's just too small.

I like Armie Hammer, he's got the right

Joe Manganiello would be perfect right now. He has the right build and personality for the role.

I kind of like Tom Welling. he has the right look and personality. But I question his acting abilities to carry a movie of this size. I like the guy, but I feel that his acting talents leave him suited for supporting roles in movies or leads on TV.

Armie Hammer. Most definitely. He probably need to bulk up a bit but he has the acting and comedic chops for playing a teenager with the body of a 20-something.
