Chloe Grace Moretz feels she's done playing Hit-Girl

08.25.2014

Earlier this month, Kick-Ass creators Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. were frank about the money KICK-ASS 2 did (or rather didn't) make, but the idea of a KICK-ASS 3 wasn't completely out of the question for them. While KICK-ASS 2 barely made it's budget back domestically, it's Blu-ray/DVD sales were stronger, bringing in about $100 million (with TV). Hit-Girl herself, Chloe Moretz, doesn't feel as optimistic about returning to the world of KICK-ASS. She recently spoke out about donning the suit again, as well as her upcoming roles (you can check out the whole interview here), but I've included the highlights below.

Moretz on returning to the character of Hit-Girl:

Sadly, I think I'm done with the character. Hit-Girl was a very cool character, but I don't think there will be any more movies. You make these movies for the fanboys, but nowadays everyone seems to pirate them rather than watch them in the movie theater. KICK-ASS 2 was one of the number one pirated movies of the year, but that doesn't help us because we need box office figures. We need to prove to the distributors that we can make money from a third and a fourth movie, but because it didn't do so well, we can't make another one. If you want more than one movie, everyone has to go and see movies at the cinema. It's all about the numbers in the theater.

Her opinion on most female superheroes in comics and film:

Whenever there's a female superhero, it's always a more sexual plot-line rather than seeing an actual character on screen. I don't think that's cool. I think it's rather sad. I would love to change that. Hopefully, there will be some cool female superhero movies in the future. I hear there's a Wonder Woman movie coming up. Hopefully they won't sexualise Wonder Woman, too.

It seems these days it's all too easy to cite piracy as the number one reason that films aren't earning box-office dollars, but according to this report from Torrent Freak, KICK-ASS 2 wasn't even on the top ten torrented movies of 2013. Most of the highest downloaded films did, in fact, make a fair share theatrically. There's no question that piracy can hurt the box-office draw of any film, but it also seems that if the film is compelling enough, people will go to theaters regardless. In this case I think they need to look at the quality of the film, rather than blaming digital downloads. In any event, I hope Chloe Moretz finds her footing in some more mature material going forward. She really had some meaty roles with the first KICK-ASS and LET ME IN, and given the right character, she can work wonders.

Chloe Grace Moret's latest film, IF I STAY, is in theaters now.

Not surprised

For me, the main draw of Kick-Ass 2 was seeing Jim Carrey (even if he disowned the film), not Chloe. Loved her as Hit Girl in both films, but let's face it, the novelty of the character had worn off by the end of the first. It was funny seeing an eleven year old girl say "cunt" whilst impaling someone with a bladed bo-staff, but by the time she was a teenager in the second film, the shock value (which, to me, is a big part of what the character relies on) wasn't there anymore, especially since

Having said that, I'd be up for Chloe coming back in 10-15 years as Hit-Lady, who trains her own group of super-killers.

Great News

Yah she really lost most of her impact as Hit Girl when she got older, and when they tried to spark a romance between her and Dave I threw up in my mouth a bit. Two was more than enough, especially with the loss of quality between 1 and 2.

First one was great. Sequel was good. I wish they'd do a third that was better than both the prequels. It would be cool to see the series go out with a bang rather than a whimper.

I enjoyed the films, but by changing the story from what they had in the comic, they kind of changed the need for a third movie. The comic, no doubt, left it open for a third volume just as Mark Millar wanted. The second film changed most of the ending and pretty much finalized the continuation of that film series.

She had a good run as Hit-Girl

Chloe's Hit-Girl was the best characters of the Kick-Ass movies to me. If it weren't or Kick-Ass, I probably wouldn't have became a fan of her. As much as I would like a third movie, I feel the second movie closed everything out well enough.

I would be fine with just two films. The only way a third film would be worthwhile is if they had Mark Vaughn come back to direct.

Well

I see a movie a week in the theatre and I buy movies all the time (current count: 3299 original movies on dvd or bluray). I saw Kick ass 2 in the theatre, and bought it - yes I liked the movie!

That being said, the people who download always download! It's not really a choice for them.
The thought process is not "should I download or go to the theatre?"
they basically say "this movie looks cool, Ill download it." that same person may go see Avengers 2 in the theatre, or some big scale

they basically say "this movie looks cool, Ill download it." that same person may go see Avengers 2 in the theatre, or some big scale films like Star Wars or something like that. These people normally just don't go at all. if you took away the ability to download they still wouldn't go see movies in the theatre.

The people who want to see movies in the theatre still want to go - the reason some have stopped is the experience in the theatre.
cell phones, assholes who talk through the film, seat kicking etc. the theatre business is a service - like a restaurant. if someone is kicking your seat or screaming in a restaurant, they GET KICKED OUT!
in the movie theatre its all fucking fair game. I have seen pop cans thrown around etc. I don't want to go pay 10 bucks to be treated like a fucking idiot in the theatre when I can just wait for bluray or download the movie. that is the mentality that theatre goers are adapting. I agree with them! I still go because I review movies for a site and I like to see them on the big screen - but even I am starting to get annoyed.

She's had a great run. I could see her reprising the role 20 years down the line for a Visa commercial or something, like when Robert Dean Anderson did MacGyver for those TV ads.

It's a shame to admit

but she's right. I was there opening day for Kick-Ass 1&2 and although I would love to see a KA-3 done right (Vaughn) , I'm pretty damn positive that it's never going to happen.

I get annoyed with people who torrent risk taking movies. We claim that we want to see something different, but every time that we do, we don't support it. We speak to Hollywood through our wallets, people.

seems like the popular thing to do is blame piracy for the film's lack of performance and not on the quality of the films themselves. Honestly if a movie is good enough people will see it in theatres torrent or no.

Glad she says it's over. I can't stand Mark Millar and his big mouth and his work since Ultimates 2 completed has been atrocious.

Agreed

I myself don't do the torrent thing, but mostly because I'm lazy and still enjoy going to theaters. But it's all too easy to blame that for a movie not making money. Kick-Ass 2 was pretty terrible from a writing standpoint, despite few and far between funny scenes like the "sick stick." So you can't blame the pirates for this one. If you want to make money, make a good movie. Because even tho everyone hates a critic, we all still listen to and digest their opinions.
