Chris Evans will take a break from acting after his Marvel contract is up

Mar. 4, 2014by:

This could put a kink in Marvel's plans for future films. In an interview with Glamour, Chris Evans says he wants to a break from acting after his Marvel contract ends. Evans originally signed a multi-picture deal with the studio, and it will end once he completes work on THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON.

"I think when I'm done with this Marvel contract, I'll take a little break from acting. With acting, you're one piece in a very big puzzle. It's like you helped buy a gift but you don't know what the gift is, so you come back and see the movie. Sometimes it's nice, sometimes it's tragic. This process [directing], you're involved in every single decision. If I hadn't done it, I'd be really kicking myself. At the time, it was a daunting task for a number of reasons, but in hindsight it was the right move"

Chris Evans also talked a little about how Captain America is different from other superheroes, like Batman or Hulk.

"He doesn't have demons. He's not Batman, he doesn't struggle with inner turmoil. The nature of this character is that he puts himself last and helps the common good. So he could easily slip into a world of boredom. The blessing and curse of Captain America is that he doesn't have that fancy an ability. He doesn't live in another world, or turn green. He doesn't have bells and whistles, he doesn't shoot missiles. He punches and kicks."

It's been rumored a third Captain America film will be part of Marvel's Phase 3 films, however nothing has been confirmed yet. Chris Evans says it's just a little break, so maybe this won't have any impact at all on Marvel's plans for their cinematic universe.

But Evans will also have to sign a new deal with Marvel, and maybe he won't be interested in playing Captain America after taking a hiatus. Although Chris Evans doesn't have the same star power as Robert Downey, Jr., he's still a very recognizable actor, and I think it would be a huge loss for Marvel if Evans decides he doesn't want to play the character anymore.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER opens on April 4th, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think Chris Evans will eventually sign a new deal with Marvel?

if we want to call what he does is acting then fine, I guess its time for my break from acting to end then.

You may not like it...

...and frankly neither do I but Steve Rogers may "die" and Bucky will become the new Cap. I like Chris Evans and I would hate for that to happen but it did happen in the comics and having Rogers die and come back would allow for Evans to take a break and maybe come back for cameos as a SHIELD director. CA:TWS is supposed to change the MCU drastically and that would definitely turn the world upside down. And even though it was a rumor the "leaked" phase three lineup had a title named Cap3:

He'd be insane to pass up the next contract. He could wrap that up and do passion projects for the rest of his life. I doubt he's made tons of dough since he was just a pretty face before The Cap. He finally has leverage and fans that want to see him. I'd be shocked if he doesn't reup.

Cap'n'Crunch

Or maybe he has advanced word of the good Captain's fate (obviously he does, they're filming Ultron now) and knows the jig is up.
I'd be fine with the Avengers REALLY having someone to avenge. At least until Disney makes a Captain America TV show and resurrects the character, ad nauseam. That would be neato. Not.

Why not

Let him direct one of the Netflix shows. One or two episodes. Maybe he can learn a bit and direct one of the Marvel movies. Seems like a good way to keep him happy.

@Avatard

The link posted below says six movies.

Downey was originally contracted for four, but they negotiated the next two Avengers films.

I thought he was contracted for 6 movies?

Cap 1
Avengers
Thor 2
Cap 2
Avengers 2

Thats 5. Am I missing something or did this article just assume that because hes taking a break from acting between Avengers 2 and Cap 3 (which would probably be a year and a bit from end of filming to start of filming) meant that his contract was up.

Does Thor 2 count or could it specifically say in his contract 3 Cap films and 3 Avengers films? It could be Evans did the Thor 2 cameo just for fun. The original version featured Hiddleston in the Cap costume.

The curse of Captain America is that he's vanilla and boring. The sequel looks decent because they've managed to surround him with an interesting plot, but take that away and Evans doesn't really have anything to work with/latch on to. Even Thor has more depth to him with his struggles with arrogance and responsibility. I'm certain that they could invent something to make the character more interesting, but they haven't found it yet.

This could easily be a negotiating tactic. Make a public announcement well before contract negotiations that you're taking a break from acting and looking to direct, knowing full well that the biggest film company in the world will want you for at least one more film. It puts them right into your hands. You name your price, and get finance support on your directorial pet-project.

First, Evans is a brilliant Cap America. I'm still gutted that so many of his man out of time scenes were cut from the Avengers - would have given him a much more meaningful role in the movie (he was also a great Johnny Storm too). Still, If Marvel had to replace him, I have every confidence they could. Don't get me wrong, I get attached to my favourite stars (be they actors or footballers) very easily... but seen enough of life to know there's always someone else that can do that job just

That's what I thought too. but if you count THOR 2's cameo, then Marvel fucked up and that cameo will cost them alot of money because now that means he is no longer contracted to do AVENGERS 3 and it would look ridiculous and embarassing to the company if the leader of THE AVENGERS is now someone else for their GRAND FNALIE.

Or maybe it's specifically defined in his contract that he has three Cap films and three Avengers films. And the Thor 2 cameo doesn't count.

They can replace everybody

Let's have a few movies focus on Doctor Strange, the Falcon, War Machine, the Vision, the Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver and Ant Man. If the original actors playing Nick Fury, Hawkeye, the Black Widow, Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Captain America don't come back then recast them with younger actors. Rotating the cast every few years makes it easier to recast actors who are getting too old to play the parts.

I thought playing in Marvel movies is already a break from real acting.

Silly joke aside. I would rather like him do some smaller films or supporting roles with more demanding character work instead of a break or just more big budget physical roles.

Chris Evans is the perfect Captain America and it would be a shame if he stopped playing the character after Age of Ultron, but I doubt he stops playing the character since there would still be Captain America 3 and the biggest superhero film to date in Marvel's Universe, Avengers 3. I would like to see all of the same actors reprise their roles all the way through Avengers 3, then after that I could see Downey Jr, Evans, and Hemsworth walking away after being involved for so long.

The guy is extremely talented and has really shown growth as an actor with Sunshine, Street Kings, London, Puncture, The Iceman, and the Captain America films. I'm a huge fan of the guy and am looking forward to Snowpiercer and whatever else he does after his break.

He's great in SNOWPIERCER (a great film as well)...
And, even though I've always thought Paul Walker would have been the perfect CapAm, I NOW would have a hard time seeing anyone else but Chris Evans, for the part.

"He doesn't have bells and whistles, he doesn't shoot missiles. He punches and kicks" - so Captain America is basically Liam Neeson, hehe. I'm sure he'll sign up a new contract for Captain America. Kids love him.

I think he will after a break, especially for the right money cause at this point, he's THE Captain America.

It sounds like

He wants to direct. I'm sure Disney can throw him a vanity project from a subsidiary production labels as some part of a Marvel contract renewal.
