Chuck Norris plainly states that he will not return for The Expendables 3

08.24.2012

Expendables Norris title

There's the old adage: "Chuck Norris' tears could cure cancer. Too bad Chuck Norris has never cried."

Well perhaps Norris has taken that truth to heart and decided to devote the later years of his life (dude's 71) to pursuits other than ass kicking, or perhaps he's grumpy that THE EXPENDABLES 2 ended up having plenty of "vulger dialogue" and being rated R after all, or perhaps he's just bored and wants to move on.  Whatever the reason, Norris has explicitly stated that he will not be returning for the further geriatric adventures of Barney Ross and Friends.

"Nope. Just number 2. This is it for me." said Norris of his EXPENDABLES experience.  "Oh, yeah. This is very special.  Just to be able to do the film with guys I've known for many, many years. To get a chance to get in and fight with them, it was a lot of fun. Plus getting a chance to meet Terry Crews, who I hadn't met before. And Jason Statham, whom I hadn't met before. It was fun just to do that."

I'm not all that broken up about Norris' exit - his character seemed to me to be more... expendable... than others.  What about you? Will you miss the bearded Ranger?

You can find THE EXPENDABLES 2 currently playing at most any theater near you.  And if you missed them the first time around, be sure to check out our review as well as our interviews with effortlessly cool cast members Terry Crews/Randy Couture, Jason Statham, and Dolph Lundrgren.

Extra Tidbit: Some would say that, thus far, the box office performance for THE EXPENDABLES 2 has been less than stellar. What's the cinematic equivalent of Viagra?

I fully expected him not to be in the 3rd film. Norris has gone soft in his old age. I think his, what is essentially, cameo was more for fun and a favor to the guys in the film. I didn't get the impression Norris had a big commitment to the project, especially considering how small his role was. If he was really into the thing, he'd have asked for a bigger part. Personally, I'm not hurt by it. I was actually often puzzled by his character in the film, as it was completely random.

Bring back Van Damme as Jean Vilain's "good" twin brother.

Out with Chuck Norris, in with Kurt Russell....(hopefully). And, we still need a third "Escape from..." movie directed and written by some talented individuals (or talented individual) for Russell in the coming years.

That's fine with me--his role was kind of fun, but I can't really stand Chuck Norris. In my ideal world, these films would have something of a rotating cast, with just a couple people (like Stallone and Statham, since they're the main characters) appearing every time. Now just frigging get Kurt Russell this time!

It's good he isn't returning, the movies are called expendables, not expandables because the cast expands every movie. Now they can cast a different old dude for a two scene role that is heavily emphasized in the marketing.

First, no one is gonna skip the third movie if Chuck isnt there. Second, they have made the classic Hollywood error on this sequel: they think they need a bigger budget to draw us back in. Frankly if they made this in a totally cheesy 80s style (a la Commando or Cobra) we would probably love it even more. No need to crash planes and blow up islands. Just raid a compound and fight in a steamy basement. Im afraid all the schlock will get taken out of the third movie.
TIDBIT: cast Kurt Russell,

*spoilers*

He was good in the small role he had, but if he doesn't want to return? fine by me. Now, as already said below, please bring Jet Li back, I was very disappointed by his cameo. In fact I thought he was going to be the one killed, which would have given the film more heart I think because he was a 'real expendable' like Crews, Couture etc.

*Spoilers*

NOT Liam Hemsworth, when Van Damme killed him I was like, meh.

Yeah, Norris' role in EX2 was fun and somewhat badass, but Norris has the weakest of the action movies on his resume. He's mostly popular for being an internet meme, getting made fun of on Conan O'Brien and kind of being a bit of a joke of himself. It was appropriate to include him in the franchise, but let's not kid ourselves about his recent popularity.

No worries

I loved Chuck in The Expendables 2. It was a pretty awesome role. Not the least bit phased that he won't be in The Expendables 3. I loved the Maggie character, but was upset Jet Li's character had such a small part, and then never returned the rest of the flick. Anyone know why his part was so small this time around ?
