Colin Firth says Kingsman sequel is “utterly its own thing”

*SPOILERS for KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE below*

One of the breakout hits of last year was the deliriously entertaining KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE. If it proved anything, it was that the finely-dressed man from THE KING’S SPEECH (Colin Firth) could kick some ass. In fact, he could not only kick some ass, but annihilate the asses of an entire group of church goers in what was the most insane movie moment of 2015.

However, his character met an unfortunate end during the course of the flick, and when a sequel was announced people were wondering how they would continue without Firth. But thanks to the internet, we learned we probably won’t have to exist in a world without Harry Hart (Firth), and now that the cat’s out of the bag, Firth is now able to talk about the film…kind of. During an interview with Cinema Blend, Firth gave his impression of the sequel, THE GOLDEN CIRCLE:

"It's no secret that I have some involvement with it, but I think it would be a pity to get too specific about what that is. I can tell you, yes, I've been on the set, and there is an extraordinary atmosphere where I think nothing is going to be obvious to anybody. I think Matthew Vaughn's outrageousness and the way he likes to subvert people's expectations, it's very, very much alive. This is not a stretching out of the stuff from the first movie. It's going to be a complete and utter… I'm optimistic that it's going to be extraordinary, and utterly its own thing."

I can imagine after the world found out that Firth would be returning for the sequel in some capacity that he would want to do as much as he could to keep some secrecy about the movie. Here he did a very graceful job of talking about the flick without giving too much away, ensuring that the movie would be its own beast. This is great news for fans of the first movie, as what was unique about THE SECRET SERVICE was its subversion of a tired genre, giving audiences something new and fresh. If Firth’s words mean anything, it’s that the sequel will do the exact same thing—as if this movie wasn’t already one of my most anticipated of 2017. Now if they could only find a way to bring back Sam Jackson…

Colin Firth and the Kingsman will return in KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE starring Taron Egerton, Pedro Pascal, Halle Berry, Channing Tatum, Jeff Bridges, Mark Strong and Sophie Cookson on June 16, 2017.
