Taron Egerton says Kingsman 3 begins filming next year

Kingsman star Taron Egerton has provided an update on the filming status of the long-awaited Kingsman 3, which is set to be the final entry of the Eggsy and Harry Hart trilogy.

While appearing on the Sirius XM show The Jess Cagle Podcast with Julia Cunningham, Egerton revealed that Kingsman 3 is expected to begin filming in 2023. That being said, he’s also quick to let the fans know that these things can change so don’t completely take his word for it:

“My understanding is that we are to be shooting the third installment in my saga I believe next year. But you know, don’t listen to what I say because I don’t really know. You know, they’re grown up decisions.”

Egerton also revealed that “there is a script” so there are definite plans to make the film. He just wants to make it clear that he’s a “humble pawn in the equation” and that this will all come down to what the studio wants to do. I’m definitely looking forward to the third installment because the main franchise has been pretty fun to watch.

Released in 2014, Kingsman: The Secret Service was directed by Matthew Vaughn and it introduced moviegoers to Gary “Eggsy” Unwin (Egerton), a capable and intelligent young fellow who is taken under the wing of Harry Hart (Colin Firth). Eggsy becomes the latest member of the Kingsman, a secret spy organization that is attempting to stop a megalomaniac and eco-terrorist from destroying most of humanity. The film was met with positive reviews, registering a 75% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and impressive box office. On an $81 million budget, the film went on to gross $286 million at the global box office.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle followed in 2017 but the critical response wasn’t as solid. Reviews were mixed at 50% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes but the global box office improved on the performance of the first film. On a $104 million budget, the sequel took in $410.9 million worldwide. A prequel called The King’s Man was released just last year after suffering several delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic and it was also met with mixed responses. The film sits at 41% rotten on Rotten Tomatoes and on a reported $100 million budget, the film only managed to gross $125.8 million worldwide. Some believe it was the timing of the release and the film facing unstoppable competition from Spider-Man: No Way Home that may have muted its box office performance.

Matthew Vaughn has previously revealed some details about where the third film could be headed and he says it will center on the relationship between Eggsy and Harry. According to Vaughn, “Eggsy and Harry [will be in it], obviously, but it’s the gang coming back together and it’s one of those moments that…when we wrote the screenplay, it was very much about, okay, I saw how people loved the relationship of Eggsy and Harry. So we just came up with this thing, what could be the ultimate reason for them to either fall in love or to hate each other forever? So that’s what this movie is all about is will they or won’t they, let’s just say.”
