COOL VIDEOS: One-shot dance commerical is physics defyingly awesome

Apr. 12, 2012by: Paul Shirey

I love long one-shot takes in film. Whether it be from Wes Anderson, Alfonso Cuaron, or Martin Scorsese, amongst others, I am amazed at the amount of detail and preparation that goes into them.

This commercial for Puegeot is like a dance video, car ad, and single-take edit roll up of awesomeness. The dancer in the video is Marquese Scott, aka Nonstop, whom I'd never heard of until today.

Suffice it to say, the dude's got skills. Remember when we posted the Han Solo Star Wars Kinect video and I said it's unlikely you'll be able to watch the whole thing? Yeah, the opposite applies here.

Enjoy:

Extra Tidbit: What's your favorite single-take edit? The ending of Children of Men still amazes me every time I watch it.

Oldboy is one of my favourite movies and the hallway scene is incredible. I would also like to mention Tony Jaa's run up the spiral staircase in The Protector. I absolutely love that scene and think it's really well done.

I love Children of Men but I hate to burst your bubble. In the movie, they weren't single take sequences. They were several shots strung together with CGI to preserve continuity. Still looks awesome though [link]

Bubble still intact. I've seen the making-of and love the whole thing. Even though it isn't one, continuous shot, it's still presented as such. The amount of preparation and sync needed to make it happen is staggering. Can't wait to see Cuaron's Gravity.

I remember Cuaron saying it WAS indeed one continous shot, they only editing they did was to digitally remove the blood splatter on the camera lens. Do you have links to justify otherwise?

The scene where they are escaping is one, continuous shot, but not the entire ending. I believe there are three sequences in the film that are continuous. There were digital fx implemented, to include the CGI baby, but otherwise they are all one shot.

An amazing accomplishment, any way you cut it.

I love long takes. There's the hallway fight from "Oldboy" of course. Also the opening of "Touch of Evil." Oh and two from Joe Wright films: the beach scene from "Atonement" and the subway fight in "Hanna."
