Cool Videos: This 20-minute Tomb Raider fan film is pretty brutal

Dec. 27, 2013by: Jesse Giroux

Last we heard, Marti Noxon was working on a script for a new Tomb Raider movie, and hopefully the next Lara Croft adventure turns out a bit like this fan film, CROFT. The video was directed by Trevor Addie, written by Irma Leong and Addie, and stars Cassandra Ebner as the titular character. CROFT is more inspired by this year's game than the older ones (or the Angelina Jolie movies), and is about "a woman will risk everything to save a young girl held hostage in the mountains by a group of mercenaries." I didn't get a chance to watch all of the video since it's almost 20-minutes long, but I was impressed with what I saw. Gritty and featuring some brutal action, I highly recommend checking out CROFT. You can learn more about the fan film here.

Extra Tidbit: Is it wrong that I always think of Simon Pegg drowning the video game character in Spaced whenever Tomb Raider is brought up in a conversation?

Just started playing the latest Tomb Raider video game and it was hilarious how the reviewer even stated that she goes from innocent to head shotting killer in one scene. But hey that's half the fun.

That was really badass. Loved it, although I don't get the point of the ending. It didn't *need* a twist, and it's not clear what they're going for - is it supposed to be her origin? Is it like that Sherlock story where Watson turns out to be the actual genius and Holmes just takes all the credit sort of thing? Or what? There's no clear purpose to it. It would've been a perfect short if it had ended at the 16:38 mark.

I was thinking that they would either have that ending tie into the whole "death" of Lara part of the original timeline, or just have her all banged up and broken from the fall and they have to airlift her off. Don't get why they basically switched the characters from the first game used it as a twist. Other than that, though, this short just shows that you don't need a huge budget to make action work. Watching Lara get the shit beat out of her and still keep kicking ass was awesome. Not that I

Not that I advocate abusing women for entertainment, but it's rare to see a female action lead take that much punishment and make you feel that punishment as they take it. I winced a few times for sure.

The Twist

It's a shame considering the woman playing the hero isn't Laura Croft. I actually wish she was cuz she was very capable of handling that role. And she played it with a slight British accent.

SPOILERS

...unlike the girl who turns out to be Laura Croft.

The young lady playing Lara croft has the physical abilities, but this film has no dialogue from her to capture her character. Also it is all action and no puzzle solving. And there are no tombs being raided. It is a simple action short. What this film lacked was great writing. The director can only work with what he has. Some of the acting is not great. And for me there was a consistency problem. The little girl's daddy just got killed in front of her A few minutes later she is smiling

I think this short film has some good things, though.

"I'm not bait, I'm a person!"

I have a lot of respect for fan filmmakers but it is true that oftentimes, they don't have a lot to work with. I like the look and the location, plus the action is done well; this benefits from director Trevor Addie being a professional stunt performer and coordinator (that jump attack with the pickaxe was cool). However, a lot of it does come across as stilted and overwrought, but I don't blame them for trying at all and I really want to see a new Tomb Raider

I liked the new game a lot better than I thought I would when news of its development was first released a good four years ago. Angelina Jolie in the first film was to me what Carrie Fisher in that metal bikini was to many an 80s lad.

The footage is cool, the dialogue is bad. The music is wrong.
