David Morrissey will be the Governor in season three of The Walking Dead

02.24.2012

There aren't many outright villains in "The Walking Dead" but undoubtedly the worst of the bunch is a character named The Governor. Introduced in issue 27, he's the leader of another group of survivors, one that places a large emphasis on entertainment, of sorts.

When the show started rumors immediately spread of who would eventually play the Governor- names like Danny Trejo, John Hawkes, even Tom Savini (who would have been perfect, in my opinion) were bandied about. But now he's been cast, and ready to go for the third season.

David Morrissey is not a huge name on this side of the pond just yet, but you might have seen him in films like CENTURION, THE REAPING and RED RIDING, among many others, and he recently finished shooting WELCOME TO THE PUNCH with James McAvoy and Mark Strong.

The 16 episodes of the third season begin production this Spring in Atlanta. Now the debate begins- is The Governor going to be British? (The Guvna?) Andrew Lincoln does a halfway decent American accent, after all...

I can't wait for Season 3, because maybe it'll mean they finally get off the damn farm.

And I'm officially done with the Walking Dead the tv show

It just feels like Heroes all over again. It started out well, but after that it went down the drain FAST! It's like the train wreck you don't want to see, but still can't look away. By the way Morrisey is a fine actor, he was great even in the Red Riding trilogy. But he's so fucking wrong for the character of the governor. Although Andrew Lincoln is a terrible Rick Grimes as well, so I guess they're at least consistent in their casting decisions.

Agree with everything but AL as RG. I think he is great and has the potential to be even better, but his supporting cast (wife, Shane, etc.) are holding him back with all the Soap Opera BS. But yes, it has become an overdramatic Soap Opera.

Also, I think Morrisey should make a fine Governor so long as he doesn't ham it up.

I wish i could get excited about this

but with the amount of changes already made from the source material i have no hope that the Governor will stack up at all to the charater in the comics.

Having read the comic, and since I own the movie Centurion, I wholly approve of this casting indeed.

Are we sure this news is accurate? All the interviews I've seen and read with Robert Kirkman he won't reveal who the govenor will be, or when he will show up.

Oh god, season 3 is going to be great. I had hoped we'd be seeing The Governor soon, but I am glad to see he will be in season 3. That said, Morrisey has a huge task in undertaking this character. Besides Michonne, he is probably the most memorable character of the entire cast. Speaking of Michonne, when is she going to come along. That's another role that's going to be big news once the actress to fill her shoes comes along. Looking forward to seeing how f'ed up season 3 will be with The

Easy there feller. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The show has already done so themselves.

You should. Much better character development and more impact (especially with character deaths).

...aaaaaand The TV show hasn't even scratched the surface of the crazy that is in the comics.

I have a feeling they won't get past scratching the surface. I.e. they won't touch some character deaths.

Hated the idea of Merle being the Governer. The Governer has an interesting and fleshed out backstory that would've been obsolete re-using another character.

And Merle is an interesting character on his own. Why waste two good opportunities? No imagination.

I agree with ya! I haven't read the comics, but it would seem dumb to me too! Better to introduce a new character!

My money was on Merle. But I guess he could end up being the Governor's right hand... man... or... yeah.

This is excellent news. Savini would have hammed it up. I'm glad they chose a fairly unknown character actor to take on such a powerful complex and despicable character. The crux of season three will rely on Morriseey's portrayal of the Governor and I think he'll do a bang up job and leave viewers stunned. I'll be counting the days until season three that's for sure.
