Doug Liman drops Gambit to direct Justice League Dark

Well, it looks as if GAMBIT's troubled production continues as Doug Liman (THE EDGE OF TOMORROW, MR. AND MRS. SMITH) has left that film to go direct another comic book property, JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK. The name may sound familiar as Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct at one point in time (and is now listed as a producer). The story groups together some of DC's shadier heroes, such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Shade the Changing Man, and Zatanna, among others. Liman has several announced projects in the works so there's no telling when he would take the time to tackle JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK.

You'd think the lack of popularity of these characters with the general movie-going public would make JUSTICE LEAGUE DARK a bit of a tough sell, but that didn't stop crowds from flocking to SUICIDE SQUAD. At least, during it's opening weekend. Admittedly, I was more excited when monster guru del Toro was attached to direct, but Liman knows how to deliver the action goods. Given the director's recent penchant for working with Tom Cruise, one might wonder if he would try to bring him into the mix. Time will tell! In meantime, let's see who's next on the chopping block for GAMBIT!

Bring back Keanu!!!!!

I'm going to throw this out there..... Bring back Keanu as Constantine and completely go out there with Tom Cruise as Deadman or Swamp Thing! Now that would be interesting. I'm all for this. Anytime I think of a Gambit movie with Mr. Magic Mike, I just can't get excited about it at all. There has got to be some suave, charismatic Frenchman out there who could embody this part.

We need a rule about announcing tentpole films. 4 years to save the date, 3 years to announce the project, and 2 years to officially lock. The movie is happening on the date we said. For Liman to drop out of Gambit, which is suppose to start filming in a few months, that would mean Warner Brothers is fast tracking Justice League Dark to start filming sometime next year. This would give it a release date of late 2018-mid 2019. DC has already announced all their films between now and 2020, they

Now they are going to stuff more films in the aleady crowded schedule? This is not something that makes the studio look like they know what they are doing.

And btw DC, if you are gonna pump $100million into a comic book movie, make sure its one people want to see. Everyone has wanted a Flash movie since the character has been created, it is one of the 5 biggest characters DC has. But do you know what movies we got before a Flash movie? Steel, Constantine, Jonah Hex, and Suicide Squad. Sure these movies can be good and make money, but why take the needless risk? Marvel did Iron Man, Xmen, Spiderman, Hulk, Thor, Captain America,Wolverine and Daredevil before risking money on a no name property like Guardians of the Galaxy. If you are trying to compete with Marvel, then take a lesson and step it up

You would think you were an executive at Warners the way you write lol. Del Toro is still a producer. This means that any pre production on this movie does not have to start from scratch. Also, for the record, DC has launched only 3 films within this new DC universe it has created. These 3 films have out grossed Marvel's first 3 films. So, it appears that DC has taken a lesson and "stepped it up". Also, DC is attempted to do what Marvel has not; make their villains interesting and character

By putting so much effort to humanize their villains, it will create a nice parallel to our heroes in upcoming films.

Guarenteed Liman left because the studio wanted to retool Gambit in response to the success of deadpool and suicide squad. Its unfortunate for Gambit because Liman imo is a top 3 action director working today. My dream combo for Gambit is Stephen Norrington and Luke Bracey as Gambit

Only reason i mentioned cruise, which i realize isnt the ideal choice, is because this movie needs someone with major screen presence to play constantine and lead the film. They needed it with affleck and smith, regardless, their gonna pick an a lister for the part

Hmmm. They've got a JLD animated movie coming out this fall...I wonder if early reactions to that have been so positive that it's giving them confidence to finally bring it to the big screen? I feel like something similar happened with the great "Batman: Assault on Arkham" and "Suicide Squad".

Either way, I've been waiting for this one for a while, I'm hoping for the best!

Suicide Squad was actually in production for a long time. It was actually developed to combat that Sinister Six movie (when that used to be a thing). Sony/Marvel was going to make a Sinister Six movie following those famous villains without Spider-Man mucking things up. This was when they knew there wasn't going to be an Amazing Spidey 3 and they fired Andrew Garfield. This made DC get the idea to use their evil gang of D listers (seriously, they aren't even close to the baddest people in

Sure, but lots of movies are in development all the time. I guess I was more trying to say that I don't think it's completely a coincidence that they took the major step of actually hiring David Ayer to write/direct just a few months after Assault on Arkham came out.

Cruise for Constantine....

.....is a terrible idea. Constantine should be a hard drinking, chain smoking scouser and Tom Cruise can not pull that off. I know its not going to happen but Matt Ryan was the ideal embodiment of Constantine, he just needed a better venue to showcase the role.

Well, I know the movie Constantine was a tall dark aired American (K. Reeve), but, just like he was portrayed in the TV shows, he's supposed to be a tall blonde English (the creator od the character envisioned Sting for the part, years ago).
So Cruise ain't the best choice, as good an actor as he is !
And I know he played blonde English (...Vampire) before, and that Jack Reacher looks NOTHING like him in the books...

This is great news considering I would rather see Liman spend his time, effort, and talent on something like this than waste his time on a solo Gambit film which seems at this point will never get made.

And considering his relationship with Cruise, I would love to see the them collaborate on this film again as well. It's about time Cruise joined a comic book film and this would be a great way to get started.
