Emma Watson to star in the post-apocalyptic "female Game of Thrones" fantasy Queen of the Tearling

06.13.2013

Remember when every movie was described as "DIE HARD on a..." or "SPEED on a..."? Well, the latest description for potential films is "GAME OF THRONES-esque". The latest movie to be described that way is the upcoming QUEEN OF THE TEARLING which will star Emma Watson and be produced by HARRY POTTER producer David Heyman.

Variety reports no director or screenwriter is attached to QUEEN OF THE TEARLING but that Warner Bros. is hoping this will kickstart a new franchise. Watson famously stepped away from the eight film HARRY POTTER series and was vocal about trying films that stretched her acting talents in different directions. Returning to a fantasy epic film with the potential to become a trilogy or more flies in the face of those comments.

QUEEN OF THE TEARLING comes from first time author Erika Johansen who was inspired by a speech by Barack Obama in 2007. The books are described as a female GAME OF THRONES, which is a bizarre comparison as GAME OF THRONES seems to have quite a large female fanbase and strong women characters.

The book is set three centuries after an environmental catastrophe when a malevolent Red Queen holds considerable power.

Watson has had quite a varied slate of films since finishing the HARRY POTTER series. She starred in PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER and has a cameo in the just released THIS IS THE END along with a starring role in Sofia Coppola's THE BLING RING. Next is Darren Aronofsky's NOAH and possibly Guillermo Del Toro's BEAUTY. Watson was also linked with the starring role in Disney's live action CINDERELLA which has cast someone else.

I like Watson as Hermione but I still have not seen her do anything truly outside the box with her acting so far. Sure, she looks pretty different in THE BLING RING, but QUEEN OF THE TEARLING could be the potential turning point for her.

Extra Tidbit: I fail to see how that description is in any way GAME OF THRONES-esque.

Snarky.
She's not "trying so hard", because she is a star. When you're a household name, you're a star.

lmao

this makes no sense at all. so im guessing it will be really violent. watch it be pg-13 and fail. "who was inspired by a speech by Barack Obama in 2007." and how does this relate to game of thrones at all the speech.

So will Game of Thrones be the new "Dark Knight" when it comes to pitching a movie idea?

Anyone who is surprised by this description

doesn't know jack about how movies are pitched to studios. The idea is always, "This is like {insert name of successful film/TV show} but with . . ." It doesn't have to make sense, it only needs to make a bunch of Harvard MBA's see dollar signs.

I like Emma Watson and the choices she's made in her career to date. Hopefully this series continues that trend.

1) I'm assuming by "outside the box" you mean playing against the Hermione roles with her acting choices. In which case I ask, how is her role in The Bling Ring in any way similar to Hermione...or even her character in Perks of Being a Wallflower. Fail on that comment sir.

2) I agree that nothing about the plot of this book/movie is anything similar to Game of Thrones. Even the influence for it has nothing to do with GOT. A Barrack Obama speech in 2007?

George R.R. Martin is basically a male feminist and for anyone who's caught up on the books you know that more of the various female characters are poised to take the iron throne than any of the male characters. I call shenanigans on this whole "female Game of Thrones" business.
