Face-Off: Hugh Jackman vs. Russell Crowe

Sep. 19, 2013by: Indiana Sev
Last week, our Face-Off showcased director Luc Bessons two best movies going head-to-head as LA FEMME NIKITA battled LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL. You guys all weighed in and decided that Jean Reno playing a cleaner in 1994 was a little better than Jean Reno playing a cleaner in 1990.

With the release of PRISONERS this week, I decided to pit its star, Hugh Jackman, against somebody that would make this a pretty fun battle. After eliminating Cyclops and the lead singer from Midnight Oil as possible opponents, I finally settled on another actor from the land down under - Russell Crowe. It's a little confusing because although Jackman was born and raised in Australia, his parents are English and he was in the movie AUSTRALIA (originally slated to star Russell Crowe who was born in New Zealand) but all of this still gives me enough to go on to call this the battle of the Aussies.

Mr. Nice Guy
There are some guys and gals in the film industry that you just never hear one bad word about. Eddie Murphy is not one of them. On the other hand, George Clooney, Ron Howard and Meryl Streep are a few very good examples. Another actor who is always at the top of the nice guy list is Hugh Jackman. Look his name up on Google along with the word nice and youll drown in pages and pages of results. I usually get bored on weekends so I do that a lot. What I should probably be doing instead is getting involved in many, many charitable events and doing philanthropic work, two things that Hugh Jackman is actively involved in. I guess what Im trying to say is that Hugh Jackman is better than me and also happens to be one of the coolest and genuinely nicest guys in Hollywood.
Im not going to say that Russell Crowe is the biggest d*ck in Hollywood because he isnt and besides, that title will always belong to Chevy Chase (although Ill give Chevy a pass based solely on his performance in NATIONAL LAMPOON'S VACATION). For a few choice years in the early 2000s, Crowe was involved in many instances where his temper got the better of him (hey, a mans gotta relax right?). He threw a phone at a hotel employee, got involved in a couple of fights and was never afraid of telling people off when they deserved it. Hell...he was even on Al-Qaedas shitlist for a while! The truth is, most of this stuff impresses me but unfortunately that isnt enough for him to win in this category against that pussycat, Hugh Jackman.
Pipes
One of the things Hugh Jackman is best known for is his ability to belt out a hell of a song. Jackman was nominated for an Olivier award in Britain for the stage play Oklahoma! and he later won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for the play The Boy from Oz (2004). Finally, he received his first Oscar nomination for playing Jean Valjean in the musical LES MISERABLES. This movie also featured a singing Russell Crowe but he did not earn a nomination for his performance. When he isnt too busy being the greatest, sweetest guy in the world or slicing up bad mutants with his claws, this guy sings...and he sings damn well!
I was looking over the Australian section of my record collection earlier and while skimming over my Men at Work, INXS and Crowded House albums I failed to find a copy of an album by Russell Crowes former band 30 Odd Foot of Grunts. Then I realized I hadnt bought any because they never had any big hits or broke through in the mainstream. I dont have any albums of his later bands either for the same reasons. There is no question Russells got the pipes to rock but were measuring overall success in this category and although Russells groups are all superior to Keanu Reeves Dogstar, it still isnt enough for him to win against Hugh Jackman and his golden tones.
The Oscars
The only film that Hugh Jackman has starred in that was nominated for Best Picture was LES MISERABLES, a movie his opponent in this Face-Off also starred in. Still, his performance was so good in the film that it earned him his first ever Oscar nomination for Best Actor. Sadly, he was up against Daniel Day-Lewis last year who portrayed Abe Lincoln better than the actual Abe Lincoln portrayed his own self when he was alive. Hugh gets a few bonus points in this category because he hosted the Oscars in 2008 but that may not be enough to beat out Russell Crowe in this Oscar race.
Russell Crowe was nominated for Best Actor three years in a row (!) for his performances in the movies THE INSIDER (1999), GLADIATOR (2000) and A BEAUTIFUL MIND (2001). He won the Oscar for GLADIATOR which also won Best Picture, an honor A BEAUTIFUL MIND also picked up a year later. In total, Russell Crowe has starred in six movies that were up for Best Picture. Hes not a regular at the ceremonies like in the early years but with Oscar-friendly NOAH coming up in 2014 and his great start with the Academy Awards early in his career, Russell Crowe wins the golden boy easily in this category.
Movie Star
What makes a movie star? Usually its the combination of great acting, memorable roles, box-office success and choosing fantastic scripts. Hugh Jackman is an extremely talented actor with a great personality but he doesnt really have that many memorable roles or moneymaking blockbusters outside of the X-Men/Wolverine movies. Hes a charming, good-looking, funny and likeable talent who is a bonafide movie star but the question I ask myself in this category is: Is he a bigger movie star than Russell Crowe is?
Russell Crowe has brilliantly portrayed real-life figures like John Nash (A BEAUTIFUL MIND), Jeffrey Wigand (THE INSIDER) and Jim Braddock (CINDERELLA MAN) with honesty and strength as well as having the character and credibility to take on larger-than-life roles like Maximus (GLADIATOR), Jor-El (MAN OF STEEL), Robin Hood (ROBIN HOOD) and the upcoming Noah (NOAH).

He wins awards, chooses great scripts, hes been in several blockbusters, has a volatile personality and hes a good looking buck. It didnt take long for Russell Crowe to become a worldwide movie star because he did everything the exact right way from the very start. Hugh Jackman is left eating the vegemite sandwich in this category as Russell Crowe edges him out for the win.
Sex Appeal
There probably isnt a sexier superhero character for the ladies than Logan/Wolverine. The character oozes charm, machismo and sex every minute hes on screen. Unfortunately the actor who portrays him is maybe a little too sweet, nice and musical to attract the ladies out there who like the bad boys. Hes also happily married which is great but the fact that women have no shot with him kind of hurts him a little here. It looks like the two categories that Jackman won in this Face-Off so far may end up costing him the ballgame.
Russell Crowe was a gladiator, sings in rock bands, beats people up and has had enough Hollywood romances and break-ups to convince me that he is the only one and true winner in this category.
Russell Crowe
Although this seemed like a close race, Russell Crowe dominated in the most important categories and the fact that he won without me once having to mention L.A. CONFIDENTIAL or one of my guilty pleasures VIRTUOSITY says a lot. The truth is this was a close race only because Hugh Jackman is such a goddamn nice guy and I would never in a million years have him lose in a blowout, no matter who he is up against.

Yeah Crowe wins this.

I like Jackman but basically he's just been Wolverine with a couple other roles tossed in.

The more I reread this, the more baffled I get. Do you know really know women at all?

Read that first paragraph.

The first two categories should've won Hugh the face off or made him tie, NOT cost him the game.

Someone below said the first two categories are loaded in Hugh's favor, whilst the Oscar category was pretty loaded in Russel's favor...yet what was the last GOOD movie Crowe starred in? Next Three Days? American Gangster? He's washing up... and he truly believes he's

Next Three Days? American Gangster? He's washing up... and he truly believes he's the greatest actor alive which is why he sucked in Les Mis...he feels no need to keep working and better himself. Hugh's nice guy humility shows him that he still can work, train, and improve. Sex Appeal and Movie Star should go to Hugh. Hugh wins! Russell Crowe lives on in South Park "Fightin' 'Round the World"

Hugh Jackman is one of my favorites. I like him in everything. That being said, Russell Crowe is simply one of the best actors out there. Of all his films, I was deeply moved by Cinderella Man. Master and Commander was great, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, even Les Miz, Crowe bring menace and strength to a role. These guys are very evenly matched. But I'll go with Crowe, but only slightly. I would watch any film with either of these fine actors.

Good Face Off But...

I agree with most that Crowe loses the last round. My girlfriend cries out HUGH! at the end of it.... not Russell.

Russel Crowe deserves the win because for me he is the better and more versatile actor. But he is in no way the sex appeal winner! Jackman has been voted people magazine's sexiest man alive in 2008. That alone should coun't for something. And a lot of my friends (male and female) would take him over Crowe anytime - I sure would.

If only they'd cast Russell Crowe as Sabretooth we could solve this one once and for all. I'd say Crowe is the better actor, based on the roles they've been in so far - he's got more of that 'powerhouse performance' thing going on. Crowe wins this one where it counts - the first two criteria kind of seemed loaded in Jackman's favour and he still didn't win, so as much as I like Jackman, this result seems fair.

Russell Crowe winning Sex Appeal? All my girl friends never fail to mention how they want Hugh Jackman to do them. And your reasons for him losing are precisely the reasons he should have won. Especially Les Mis. Girls eat up a guy who can sing like Hugh and everyone and I mean EVERYONE who loves Les Mis was repulsed by Russel Crowe. This faceoff should've been a tie...though nowadays with The Prestige and Prisoners, Hugh might be beating Russell Crowe out as a movie star.

This was very well thought-out. I was sure Jackman would take the cake (in general, he's just an easier guy to root for), however, from a certain point of view, you make an excellent case for Crowe. Crowe was a bigger star at his height than Jackman is now, but I'm not sure if I'd say he's a bigger star today.

Hugh Jackman for the win

Hugh Jackman is Exhibit A in the contention that "yes, they do make 'em like they used to." The man is the complete package: handsome, charismatic, consummate professional, a great actor and a song-and-dance man. And he's also a hell of a nice guy; I saw his one-man show in Toronto and he completely won over the audience simply by being himself. He is a classic movie star.

Crowe has done some great work but his star has eclipsed in recent years, and he's pulled a diva routine a few

I should add that Jackman blew Crowe off the screen in LES MISERABLES.

No contest, Hugh Jackman wins this one without breaking a sweat. He has all of Crowe's dramatic chops, but has demonstrated far more range in his ability to do action, comedy, and musical. Better-looking and far more charismatic, too.

Hugh comes out on top for me. He's built a reputation as one of the sweetest, most likeable men in Hollywood, which definitely can't be said for Russell Crowe. And acting-wise, Crowe may have the reputation as the more serious dramatic actor, but I think Jackman certainly is no slouch either. Hugh can sing, dance, do drama, do comedy, do action, is all kinds of sexy...Maybe ten or so years ago, around the time of Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind and when Jackman was only just starting to be

Hugh deserves it!

In terms of versatility, appeal, and overall talent, Jackman is the clear winner.

I'd go for Hugh Jackman. He seems like a more likable guy than Russell Crowe. Aside from action and drama genre, Hugh is actually good in romantic comedies like Someone Like You and Kate and Leopold.

Hugh for the win.

So let me get this straight with the Sex Appeal category rationale: So because one actor had a role as a Gladiator, has a band but doesn't sing very well, doesn't stay with the ladies for too long, and beats people up, that's sexier than another actor who can actually sing (and dance) very well, who is a decent guy, handsome, charming, and happily married.

Interesting.

Hugh Jackman

They're both great actors and bring much depth to each and every role they play, but I have to give this one to Jackman. On a personal level I enjoy his work more and I just think he's an all round better actor and person.

I also think Jackman should have won an Oscar last year for Les Miserables. Despite how great Lewis was in Lincoln.

Ageed. Daniel Day Lewis won an Oscar for a role that wasn't as good as his previous Oscar wins. He won simply for being Daniel Day Lewis trying to beat a record. Hugh was amazing in a role that played to all his strengths. He may not get a chance to show off like that again.

Good Face-Off...

I agree with Crowe for now, but I feel like Jackman will outshine overall. Although.. I'd rather watch these two guys punch fight each other to determine a winner. Somebody get that in motion.

Even though Jackman may not have as many blockbusters under his belt, he is a household name. He's done everything from comic book flicks to musicals to suspense to more artistic roles. He sells. IMO, it's he's the reason that X-Men: Days of Future Past is using Wolverine as the central character that joins past & future instead of Kitty Pride. This past summer went a long way to showing that it's not always the big blockbuster stars (Depp, Smith) that draws audiences now-a-days.

This is a hard one. Both are damn great actors. Jackman has been on fire as of late, Crowe has had the more consistent body of work. I still have to go with Crowe over Jackman, He has had more memorable roles. Although there is no doubt in my mind that Hugh is probably the better person.

Eating Crowe

Jackman would eat Crowe in a minute.
Would love the day when actors like Jackman can live an honest life in the public eye, being true to who they REALLY ARE, and being an inspiration to the LGBT community in the process.

I personally like Jackman a lot more than Crowe

and Jackman is a very talented actor, but I think that Crowe is hands down even more talented. Yes, he is overpaid for how much his movie's tend to gross, but the quality of his filmography really just speaks for itself. Like DareDevil said, for me Crowe wins out in having the stronger resume/acting chops (although Jackman may surpass him someday) but Jackman wins in everything else.
