Guy who directed Justin Bieber will now direct G.I. Joe sequel

02.28.2011

This news got lost in the shuffle this past Friday, but I thought you guys might just be dying to know who's gonna be at the head of the next G.I. JOE film...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Chu, director of the hit documentary JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER (not to mention the last two STEP UP movies), has won the gig to helm the Paramount sequel of real American heroes, beating out reported competitors F. Gary Gray (LAW ABIDING CITIZEN) and Jaume Collet-Serra (UNKNOWN).

The seemingly out-of-left-field decision comes as less of a surprise when you consider that Chu has quickly become a good chum of Paramount's thanks to NEVER SAY NEVER's $53 million gross (so far) from a reportedly $13 million production budget.

But who will - or won't - be returning for the sequel? THR says that Paramount may end up recasting some of the film's major roles. Specifically, it's uncertain if fan-favorite Joseph Gordon-Levitt (perhaps the best part of the first film) or the sexy Sienna Miller would be coming back. Channing Tatum fans need not worry, though, as the set of washboard abs (who's already worked with the new director on STEP UP 2: THE STREETS) is expected to reprise the role of 'Duke'.

As for Chu, in a recent interview with MovieWeb, he spoke of his love for the Joe property and how he hopes to turn it into the respectable movie experience he feels it deserves:

"Joe, to me, is iconic. It is as American as Coke and the Boy Scouts. To have that kind of history in a brand is so rare these days. And that is so powerful. So you can't treat Joe like its just another action movie. You can't treat Joe as just another petty commercial movie. Joe has history. Joe has always been a part of what America is, and now the world. What it means to be a leader and a hero. For me, it is about the fun stuff like Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes, and all the gadgets. All of that stuff. But it has heart. Its heart is what America, and what heroes and leaders around the world, strive to be. I think that is what the brand needs. It needs the respect to be treated in that way."

Do you agree with his sentiments or is he dipping into some major hyperbole there?

Watch this end up accidentally being really cool.

This guy is probably like: "Fuck, I gotta get out from under these two shitty flix I made, that made money without having anything to do with me."

Watch him hit an unexpected home run and surprise the shit outta everyone.

We'll see...

AS long as he gives us G.I. Joe and gets rid of Operation International Consensus, I'll go see it.

Get rid of Snake Eye's sculpted mouth too.

I really didn't think it could get worse. I don't know why Paramount and Hasbro would treat Transformers one way and G.I. Joe the exact opposite way. They have two franchises that could co exist and they treat them as two completely different things.

If the Joes are not only soldiers, but accountants to get us out of debt, they will truly be the heroes we need for the modern era.

This will be worst than the first movie and that alone is almost impossible.
With him, Tatum, and the ever annoying Marlon Wayans, this is going to suck.

With this clown directing you can expect a GIJoe sequel in the ranks of Dragon Ball Evolution.. The reason Paramount didn't hire any competetent director for this movie is because they want to conserve the absurd and stupid comedy cartoonish action line of the first flick, don't expect that with F.Gary Gray or Jaume Collet that are by far more serious directors than this guy..

This dude beat out F. Gary Gray and Jaume Collet-Serra simply cause he made a flick that made money... and it made that dough cause of Bieber, that,s it. A chimp could have directed it and it would have made the same [link] Hollywood...

Uggggggh! Why can't GI Joe get a decent director? Really? The guy who directed step up? WTF? And some one should let this Jackass know that GI Joe has not always been part of America. It was originally created in 1964. So unless you know something the rest of humanity doesn't know, America is a lot older than that. This sucks!

I liked the first G.I. Joe movie and think the sequel would have been just as good if not better with the same director or from someone else cappable of directing a G.I. Joe movie. This guy who is now directing is not a good choice and is not that man to take this sequel to the next stage.

And to have Levitt and/or Miller not come back sucks. They were two of the best parts in the first one.

I don't know. Only time will tell on how good this is going to be.

There is a special place in hell reserved for this man for what he foisted on the public with his last film, or if you are an atheist, a chic piece of real estate in Chernobyl upon death.

Saying that, many an excellent director has made the transition from music video, which is what the B film is basically ( an extended version), and feature length fiction .

I'm not sure he has the proper sensibilities, at least not for my tastes, most likely the studio figured he knows how to tap into

I realize almost anyone could have directed Nsn and it would have been a hit, it was already presold but i would give the man a chance before i totally dismiss this idea.

I'm not exactly clamoring for a GI Joe sequel regardless of who the director is that's why i'm neutral on this development.

WTF! Seriously he did a concert movie and now he's qualified to take on a major tentpole action film. Hollywood is just f'd up these days. The only bright spot is it looks like he respects the source material.

I would imagine everyone would want to be re-cast now.

The 1st flick was so lame it was sad. It had an unbelievable cast, except for Marlon Wayans he is the lamest of the Wayans. Oh wait they're all lame now. Whatever happened to the Wayans that made the great "I'm Gonna Git You Sucka" or even "In Living Color?" Now they just make Sh*t. I can't imagine anybody involved in the 1st Joe wants anything to do w/this crap unless they get big ol' paychecks. I would be more amazed if this gets a budget anywhere near what the first Joe cost's

What's worse is they're praising the director because of the Bieber film? A monkey could have directed it & the Tween girls & there mothers would have still went to see it. The director doesn't deserve anything for this being a hit. Seriously, what a complete joke. I know studio execs are stupid, but this really takes the cake!

but if you are getting paid to watch, well...a man's gotta eat. so i'd probably watch it too.

This makes absolutely no sense at all, the 1st movie was balls to the wall crazy with action & they get the guy who did 2 lames ass dance sequels. The main question is can he even direct an action sequence? Let me guess the sequel will be in 3D & since he worked with 3D dats why he was hired, stupid ass hollywood. Should of got F. Gary Gray at least we know he can direct action.

I think that first G.I Joe was fun times. And Sommers did good job with it (except for overuse of cgi at the end).

But this... is not good news.
