Harry Potter to replace Jaws ride at Universal Studios after all

12.06.2011

With Universal Studios Orlando shutting down their 20 year-old Jaws ride, many rumors emerged stating that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, their most popular attraction from the adjacent Islands of Adventure park, would be expanded into the space it occupied. Universal has just confirmed this is indeed the case.

There's no specific details just yet. The "entertainment environment" currently includes Hogwarts Castle, Hogsmeade and more, so we'll see what else they can put in there. Perhaps you'll be able to take the Hogwarts express from park to park, as also rumored.

This is a great decision for them, of course, and clearly will be way more of a draw than that JAWS ride. The last time I took that one our guide looked like that pimple-faced teen from "The Simpsons", and the whole part where he was shooting the grenade launcher at the shark almost put me to sleep.

Universal has also announced that The Wizard World of Harry Potter will be coming to Universal Studios Hollywood as well, and be just as impressive as the Orlando location. Cash in on that license!

“I am delighted that The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been so popular with fans since the opening in Orlando last year and I am sure that the teams at Universal and Warner Bros. will bring their expertise and attention to detail to Hollywood to make this new experience equally as exciting,” said J.K. Rowling.

No dates for the openings have been announced just yet.

One rumor said the new ride could be an indoor coaster based in Gringott's.

I thought that would make the perfect ride at a park the minute i saw the scene in the movie.

Well I just got back from going on jaws the ride. The additional que space that use to be for the overflow of crowds is being slowly deconstructed as I type this. The boats are working on a skeleton crew with barely 2 boats going and obvious work being done to take it down little by little as even the areas itself around the ride looks like they are slowly phasing it out of being a 5 star attraction to a ghost town. The odd thing though is that some of the workers havent even learned about the

The odd thing though is that some of the workers havent even learned about the jaws closure until guests have actually told them. Talk about rotten employee support universal. Oh and for those who say that universal did this cause they need space for harry potter, that is a huge load of bull. Behind simpsons and barney, is a massive boneyard of space full of absolutely nothing. They use it mainly to store tents on occasion for halloween horror nights but the rest of the time its empty. They could have just as easily closed barney down and had a huge area of space for a harry potter land. As for popularity, that place on a peak day can easily draw the same amounts of crowds as the mummy so crowds is not an issue. The real issue is universal execs that are coming in want to leave their own stamp on the company product while eliminating those left behind. There is no reason to remove it accept to make people visit universal just to see jaws go then cut off a major section of the park forcing people to spend more of their time in other sections.

I'm down with this. Hopefully they stick a high-thrill attraction in such as a Potter themed roller-coaster or something. I'd ride that Hogwarts Express too for sure!

If space is an issue

If possible, why not fill in the lagoon and the water in the middle of both parks? These lakes are a pain to walk around, and are taking up a ton of space that could be used for more timeless franchises like Terminator and BTTF. Universal is getting a little short-sighted in its development, and now that the Harry Potter franchise is completely developed - in print and film, it will be interesting to see how long it attracts the masses.

I will always have fond memories of King Kong, Jaws, and Back to the Future. I will miss those attractions dearly, they are based of of my favorite movies of all time. It does suck that Universal is getting rid of their older-iconic attractions but they have enough trouble keeping up with Disney as it is and they don't the room they do either. They don't need to keep around attractions year after year that are getting dated. This is an extremely smart business decision for Universal especially

Of course this makes sense. They're not aiming for 30-50 year olds who love Terminator and Jaws and Back to the Future. Nothing against these films (obviously some of the best ever) but people aren't lining up in droves anymore for outdated attractions based on films their parents used to love. I personally would've liked to see a brand new attraction based on a new film, but probably makes even more financial sense.

What did people expect?

King Kong, Jaws, Back to the Future, and Earthquake were all almost two decades old. They need to appeal to a new generation, so why not start now? I understand the expansion of the Harry Potter franchise, but I do hope they include some other films as attractions.

Man, fuck Universal. King King, Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Earthquake, now Jaws. Sure, lets get rid of everything that is iconic and has stood the test of time for bullshit that's popular now. All right, Harry Potter is pretty fucking iconic, everything else they've gotten rid of is pure bullshit.
