Interview: Morgan Freeman!

Oct. 15, 2010by:

I've been doing this press day racket for a while now and the days of being really excited to meet Celebrity A are pretty much over. Yet I have to say, I was really thrilled to meet Morgan Freeman. I mean, c'mon, it's Morgan Freeman. And continuing my streak of awesome things that happen when the cameras aren't rolling, Mr. Freeman bellowed a "Mike from JOBLO.COM!!!" in his signature voice when I came in. Oh the things I wish I could have on my voicemail...

Unlike some of his co-stars, Mr. Freeman wasn't the most loquacious actor there and he blew through my questions in about two minutes. He was an extremely nice guy but as an interview... Well, it wasn't easy. But still, Morgan Freeman. Check out our interview below and remember, RED is in theaters today!

Freeman Interview

The reason there wasn't much to Freeman's interview is because you asked non-directed or "yes/no" questions.

Mike: "Do you rehearse prior to..."
Freeman: No
(Freeman is a pro so he elaborates to give the answer some body)

Mike: "Who was your first scene with"
Freeman: Some young nurse
(Better question: Which of the main characters - Willis, etc. - Did you interact with first?)
Would have proven for a more interesting answer.

Mike: "Did you get to go off script a little

Freeman: No

And do us a favor. Please make your questions more concise. Ask the questions and stop trailing off your question with elaboration.
Example: "Did you get to go off script a little bit and come up with....." and at that point Freeman steps on your question to get to the point.

These celebrities are doing these interviews ALL DAY. You have to give them something fresh and interesting because they have been giving the same canned answers to dozens of reporters. They are tired and bored. They need something to give them a little zing.

Mike: "Did you go back and look at the graphic novel at all..."
Freeman: No

Mike: "So you just form that character in your own brain.."
Freeman: Yup

Mike: "That kinds of translates in what he gets to do...he's not like Helen.."
Freeman: No

The "Chemistry" question was a good one.

Mike: "As you get on in your career (translated: You old man) is that just as important ...who you get to work with?"
Freeman: Of Course

Mike: "Did you meet with Roderick before hand.."
Freeman: No

While I am sure it was exciting to interview Morgan Freeman....please come up with more than Yes/No questions.
Rules of Interviewing: Work through the interview, set up and then hit with a killer question that makes them think.

That will give the actors some life in their answers.

For what it's worth.
