Is Channing Tatum about to leave Gambit behind?

07.28.2015

It's possible that the upcoming X-Men spin-off film, GAMBIT, may have lost its leading man. The Wrap has reported that Fox's deal with Channing Tatum is quickly unraveling and that the actor may be on the verge of exiting the project. The Wrap's source tells them that negotiations with Tatum are still ongoing but admitted that things weren't going as smoothly as they would hope, adding "something is up."

RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES director Rupert Wyatt recently signed on to direct GAMBIT and has been working with Fox in the process of testing actresses to star alongside Tatum, including SPECTRE's Lea Seydoux. Should the deal with Channing Tatum officially fall apart, Wyatt and the studio will have to scramble to fill the role if they still want to keep the production on track. It was just earlier this week when we learned that GAMBIT is set to begin production in New Orleans this October with a $154 million budget.

Channing Tatum has long been a fan of the character since the announcment of his casting more than a year ago, he even recently referred to Josh Zetumer's GAMBIT script as "killer," so I'm not entirely certain why Tatum reportedly seems set on leaving it all behind. We'll keep you updated; either with news that Tatum has left or that he's managed to snag himself a bigger payday. GAMBIT is still scheduled for a October 7, 2016 release.

Let's play casting director; should Tatum leave, who would you like to see take over the role?

The Wolverine origins atrocity was not Kitch's fault at all but he is a horrible actor. Definitely a step above Tatum's wooden acting but their has to be someone better. Even though Depp is older, why not him?

Well...HOPEFULLY it's money issues, and not script changes. If he ends up leaving over money, at least we'll know the movie will still be as good as the one he was excited about. If he leaves because of script issues though...watch out for giant spiders in the third act

Bring back Kitsch (should have gone with him in the first place) - not his fault he was given a terrible script to work from...certainly as far as the Gambit treatment goes.

Hope not

Hope Tatum stays. He would make a perfect Gambit. Think about it, good looking Southern lady's man. Channing being an Alabama boy would have no problem pulling off a Cajun accent and he has the right look.

Get rid of him. Please!

I would love it if he wasn't Gambit. Fuck, that would be glorious.

want a viable theory...?

tatum was expecting magic mike 2 to do stellar numbers. he was going to use it to leverage his asking price. when mike underperformed, the studio used it as their leverage, offering less.

Please let this come true. I don't hate Tatum, he's actually fairly funny and can work in certain roles, it's just he won't in this one. This casting feels like most of the horrible castings in X-Men 3.

Brett Ratner is somewhere praying that Tatum stays on the movie.

Please...

He just doesn't seem right. Even his build doesn't seem to fit the character so it be great if he did. The previous actor in Wolverine was better suited, not to suggest it should be him but there is a lot better suited actors for the role, known or unknown.

He seemed passionate about the project and would've bring the female audience to cinemas, but I just can't/don't want to see him as Gambit. So I hope he stays as a producer or so and they cast someone else for the part.

I know this is a very small, minor detail to want, but Gambit was never a bulky dude and I couldn't see him as being one. You need someone that's just athletic, not muscular, and Tatum seems too muscular.

Yeah, because no one has ever lost weight or to be in a movie before. 2 months not going to the gym and being on a strict diet and he would be the exact build you're looking for.

"Yeah, because no one has ever lost weight or to be in a movie before."

OK, here you are defending him, drastically, after you said "Definitely a step above Tatum's wooden acting"...Seriously, dude???

And I know he could lose weight and what not, but I've never seen him be a committed actor like that before and I could say the same thing about what you said because he could improve his acting.

As much as a fan I am of Tatum, I could never really see him in the role. I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't mind Kitsch's portrayal as Gambit in Origins Wolverine, and wouldn't mind if he had the chance to reprise the role again along with better writing and direction (and it would help for continuity purposes as well).

But if Tatum does drop out and Kitsch isn't considered, then Josh Holloway would be my personal pick. The guy has the look, charisma, and swagger to pull it off

And the guy is due for a big movie role after his successful run on Lost for six seasons. They would obviously have to lower the budget though if they went in that direction.

At this point it would make sense to bring back Taylor Kitsch.

This is probably for the best. Heck, I like Gambit, but I'm not sure he needs his own solo film. Having said that, imagine Leo DiCaprio in the role. That would be interesting, though very unlikely.

Not letting Tatum play Gambit is the best decision Fox has made in a long time. This guy's range as an actor is as much as a piece of wood, and he has no charisma whatsoever.

Spot on. He's great playing at 'dumb guy' comedy roles like Jump Street, but the guy's not an action/comic book movie star.

He's not a big enough name to ride a 150 million budgeted movie on, but I'd personally love to see Josh Holloway land the gig. Always thought Sawyer would be a great Gambit.

Cast of Xmen, F4, Deadpool, and Gambit... Essentially Fox's own half assed wannabe cinematic universe.

He wasn't right for the role anyway but I'd still choose him over that dude on True Detective: Season 2 any day. Honestly I think the key thing to remember here is that colossal budget. I think the studio knows Tatum isn't bankable enough and they're afraid of gambling (no pun intended) with their investment.

Most likely it's not the actor and director's fault, but the producers getting cold feet since Magic Mike XXL didn't take off as much as they had hoped.

Let's be honest......

Tatum is hardly a box office draw, and he's not even a really good actor. If he's holding it up over money, then they should move on. They could easily do better.
