Is Nolan Done?

Aug. 27, 2008by: Daniel Barna

While the interweb runs rampant with outlandish casting rumours surrounding the follow up to Chris Nolan's THE DARK KNIGHT (Rosie O'Donnell as Clayface?) most have chosen to ignore the fact that Nolan himself has not even signed on for the third installment. I guess it's just assumed that 500 million domestically and counting means "f*ck yeah let's do it again!"

Apparently not. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan, who is on a much needed vacay, has yet to commit to the daunting task. In the article, THE DARK KNIGHT producer Charles Roven says:

There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it, but it's really Chris' call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn't think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on. When he comes back, we will see how he feels.

If Nolan does in fact decide not to return, may I suggest Joel Schumacher as a possible replacement? Something tells me he would do a fantastic job.

NO NOLAN NO BATMAN 3

i didnt say no nolan no more batman movies. cuuz that would be gay. i mean no nolan no tdk sequel. because batman 3 wont be in the vision we all have witnessed in tdk. it'll jus be wrong and it wont feel right to have another director come in.

no bats w/o nolan??!!

saying that there should be no future batman films if chris nolan doesn't come back is retarded. batman's been around a hell of a lot longer then chris freaking nolan.

Twoface dead?

Nolan will come back. TDK didnt really leave the franchise completed.

On another note however... am I the only one who doesnt think two face is dead? they say that Harvy Dent was dead but that doesnt mean jack for two face. In this film they very much wanted the two characters to be eparate, even though they are the same entitiy. I dunno. I just feel like its more of a cliche to kill the villan at the end. They bury Dent for the public but im sure two face is in alylum

Give Nolan some time. He'll come around to complete the trilogy. As far as villians go, I'd like to see Clayface. But there are a handful of good villians to choose from. And I don't think it'll be Two-Face because I think Nolan is far too creative for the whole "Oh, by the way, he didn't really die" cliche

what a dumb fucking article

I would be pissed if I were Nolan and I saw some dumb shit article like this. He did The Prestige after Batman Begins, we didn't see anything out of Knight until after Prestige. So what makes us think that Nolan is ready to sign on to a new film a month after Dark Knight hits?? He's got a LOT of time to spend making a script because a third film is not set up as nicely as the second one was. Dumb article still

fuck it, he shouldn't do it. the dark knight was perfect. can't we all just revel in that a bit? i think it'd be cool if he let it sit for awhile and make a third film in like 10 or 12 years with all the same main character actors and play it with an aging batman, something like what metal gear solid 4 did with snake except not as extreme. you could give alfred the butler a good death if michael caine doesn't die before then. the city has a chance to evolve and devolve in its respective

I really don't care if Nolan comes back or not. The Dark Knight was a great movie, but I'd be more excited about a third movie if they get another talented director than if they bring Nolan back.

I know what Nolan's Batman is like. I want to know what a Batman from Alfonso Cuaron, David Fincher or Tom Tykwer would be like

I honestly believe Nolan will not make another Batman film. He has almost no reason to. He's a small indie director, he shouldn't give a shit about money or fame. I honestly believe he's said everything he wants to in the batman universe, and that's fine with me. I would prefer things stay on a high note, instead of every other fucking superhero trilogy where the second is the best and the third is the worst.

That being said, they will make a 3rd batman. And I hope we get Depp as the

The third movie will be good, just not chris nolan good. And this way nolan can work on another great film (prestige 2...*fingers crossed*)

Terrible title for a headline..these stories about any little thing on Batman are getting ridiculous..i love TDK like the rest do..but get a life! Obviously you can never top TDK much less the 2nd highest gross ever. So from now on i'm not reading anything more about Batman unless its newsworthy.

I agree with LoCkEd_N_LoAdEd, if Nolan doesn't come back there shouldn't be another Batman film. And as for another movie with Nolan, I'm not saying he can't top it, but it was the best fucking Bat-movie ever with the best villian in the Batman universe. Any other villian to follow up wouldn't be able to top the preformance of Heath as Joker or the character of Joker himself.

I don't know that's just me thinking.

Although I will completely understand Nolan's reasons for not coming back, I would like to see a third movie to round out the series. We don't even have the batcave yet, which was kind of hinted at in the end of batman begins. Even if the 3rd movie doesn't top the dark knight, as long as it is good i'll be happy. (think return of the jedi compared to empire).

Until we actually know who the villians will be I won't make any casting choices.

i didn't read all these comments, but i'm extremely content if this was his last batman film
honestly, i don't know how he can top tdk
keeping in mind not just heath's performance... but the caliber of the joker as the villian
it's widely known that the joker is the greatest villian ever created, so how could he top it?

i dunno, i'm thinking and typing but the main point of this was to say that if this was his last batman i'd be content with that!

TDK was an instant classic. it was perfect in every way to me. the dialouge, acting, action, morality of good and evil. the best superhero movie of all time for me. if i were nolan, i wouldnt come back. because i would feel accomplished. i would feel that this is the movie that i always wanted to make. this is my vision and this was my goal. he accomplished it and now people are praising him. in my opinion i would leave the dark knight alone. no sequel because TDK was soo good how would he even

As much as some people think Nolan has done all that he needs to do for the Batman franchise, I'm pretty sure he'll return for a third. A fourth would be pushing it so lets not even go that far yet, but a third is a definite 'yes'. Although TDK looked pretty conclusive, there are tons of plots and angles there that were left hanging, and people like Nolan NEVER begin a story that they won't personally end. Although TDK looked pretty conclusive, there are tons of plots and angles there that were left hanging, and people like Nolan NEVER begin a story that they won't personally end. He knows how the story goes and don't be surprised if he had the entire trilogy up in his head even before starting Batman Begins, despite him denying the fact. Maybe he doesn't divide the story into three parts, but he has an idea, I'm sure. He started the series, TDK was the middle, and there has to be a conclusion. *SPOILERS* Heck, I won't be surprised if he brought The Joker back by recasting him. We all know he had plans for the Clown Prince in the third installment. If he was bold enough to allow The Joker to survive in TDK, what makes us think that he won't simply bring the character back for another round? Heath Ledger will always be uber-fantastic and remembered, but who's to say Nolan will not find someone worthy of the role?

As far as casting goes, I don't know. No villain stands up to the magnitude of The Joker...and that's probably why Nolan knew for sure that he had to bring him back. Tragedy struck, and that's probably the only reason why Nolan is holding back. We'll never know for sure.

catwoman/riddler

Since those seem to be the most popular choices for villains in the next batman. I'll pick my choices. Would anyone else like to see Vera Farmiga as catwoman and guy pearce as the riddler?Vera is growing in popularity and guy works well with Nolan as we saw in memento. Both are incredibly talented and I think would suit the batman franchise nicely.

I think edward norton might actually make a good riddler or even sean penn. Now how about the penguin? why not bring danny devito back! haha, i doubt that would happen. The only thing about the dark knight i didn't approve of was how they dealt with two face, he's such a deep character and has such a huge story, the didn't have to kill him, I really wish they had ended it some other way...

The Dark Knight Returns

Nolan took a cue from Frank Miller's Batman: Year One for the storyline in Batman Begins and he set up an arc that returns Batman to a hunted vigilante at the end of The Dark Knight. He should wait years, or age Bale and do a modern adaptation of the The Dark Knight Returns, including that epic fight with Superman. It could be a masterpiece.

Famke Janssen

how about Famke Janssen as catwoman? I think Jolie was almost made to play the part, but she has become bigger than her roles and it would not be a good distraction.

I agree that they should work in Ryan Gosling. If they decided to somehow include Robin he would be a great choice.

I think Kristin Bell as Harley Quinn has been the best casting rumor I've heard. I think she'd be perfect.

All of Batman 3's casting rumors suck...

... and the same goes for the titles. "Shadow of the Bat"... c'mon, that's lame! Johnny Depp as The Riddler... sounds like fanboy bullshit to me. Cher as Catwoman- WHAT THE FUCK?!!!

Anyway, we aren't going to hear anything concrete for many months (maybe not until a year from now), so all this speculation could get even wilder. In the mean time, lets TRY to get on with life instead of eating up every fucking rumor to hit the net that obviously has no ounce of truth to it.

Nolan

Who says a third has to be the last? Trilogies are fine, but why not make more?
If Nolan does come back, then he probably would only do that last one. I think he will return.

As for casting rumors, I think they will go somewhere we are not thinking. Look at the casting of Ledger and Eckhart for TDK. So when I hear Johnny Depp as The Riddler - I think no way. They will probably do another "off-beat" casting choice, not uber-famous like Angelina Jolie as Catwoman. And while I love Carla

Perhaps if they don't cast Rachael McAdams as Lois Lane (I am trying to start that rumor...:)) in the reboot of Superman, she can be considered for Catwoman.

ugh

I'm quite convinced that if Nolan does not return, the legacy will be tarnished. Let's hope he doesn't pull a Bryan Singer on us, in which case we'll have to take the 1st two films and just walk away.

As far as villians go, I think it's easier to say who wont be in the movie then who will.

We def. won't be seeing clayface or anyone like that. Smart money's on the Riddler

Casting

Stiller: Riddler
Gugino: Catwoman
The Rock: Reaper
Kane: The KGBeast or Bane

Find something for Ben Foster and Ryan Gosling - 2 great actors that could use major exposure!

Forget Jolie for any role. She's always a distraction because she's a tabloid favorite. I don't think Nolan would use her anyway.

Although I'm against Angelina as Catwoman - that pic you chose does show a resemblance - although I guess if you look hard enough you can find a pic to reseble anyone...my personal choice would be Bridget Moynahan - she'd make a super sexy Selina Kyle and I'm sure could rock a mean leather catsuit.

I agree with those that said Fincher would make a great replacement in Nolan's absence.

Y'know, "The Dark Knight" could've been just the second half of "Batman Begins" for all we know. I know there are very few directors I'd even consider handing this particular Batman franchise over to if Nolan decided to back out.

What I actually expect will happen, is he'll make something else before he does a third Batman. I think it would be good for him therapeutically, anyway.

And as far as I know, Bale said if Nolan agreed, he'd be fine coming back. But Nolan hasn't made plans. Not

My gut feeling says nolan will return eventually for Batman 3 but I honestly could not watch it if Nolan opted to not return. Well, unless they got a good director on par with Nolan.

No to The Riddler and Catwoman

I'm voting for Black Mask or The Reaper. The latter probably won't make it, but one can dream, damn it.

I understand Nolan's need for a break. Hell, he's made three very good films in three years, imagine the manic pace of such a work ethic. But I can't sit still until he commits to 3. Come on now, Chris, don't give us the beginning and the middle without the end! I don't mind if he makes another film in between ala Prestige to take a break and recharge his creative energies, but I just need to hear him say, "I'm on it but give me time." I just want confirmation.

Didn't Nolan and Bale say they didn't want Batman in a JLA movie until they did their third movie?

The guy has made some pretty damn interesting stuff... Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige.

Now the guy has all the money and respect that he will ever need. He can do anything he likes. If he's not interested in being a Hollywood Blockbuster Director then that's fine by me. Go back to telling smaller interesting stories.

If Nolan doesn't go for a third, perhaps Fincher would be able to carry on the legacy... I mean, he's definitely familiar with that whole 'gritty' style.. just don't let Schumacher ever touch this franchise again. EVER.

Cher

The F-ing Cher casting rumor for Catwoman! I will seriously not see the movie if that old hag is in it! But I don't think she will be :)

You'd hope that the studios would be smart enough to see what's working and run with it, but that may be giving them too much credit (have you seen the letter Jeff Robinov sent out saying that they plan on making all their DC properties dark and brooding like TDK? That shows that they are quite far from "getting it").

Also, while I'm also anxious to see what post-Batman projects Nolan chooses to persue, I think he actually has put a pretty unique take on the series. I mean his films and

Also, while I'm also anxious to see what post-Batman projects Nolan chooses to persue, I think he actually has put a pretty unique take on the series. I mean his films and Burtons were both "dark" versions of the mythos and yet look how different they've turned out.

I think saying Nolan is capable of more than superhero movies is selling him and the film both a little short. Most critics (Corliss, Ebert, Phillips, Roeper and Wilosnki to name a few) are calling TDK his most accomplished work yet. Will he some day make a better movie than TDK? Probably. But many, many people consider (fan and critic alike) consider it his best work so far.

Michael Keaton = Hush. I don't care who is directing, get it done.

Losing respect?

Honestly, I'm just happy he even touched the series. He resurrected this from the very, very deep grave Schumacher tossed it in.

I would love it more than anything if he went back - it could only get better - but if he decides he's done, good on him. He knows what he's doing.

But abandoning? That's harsh. If he feels like he's done all he wants, it's only fair.

Does it really matter that much if Nolan comes back for #3? Yeah, he's done a good job twice now, but it's not like he's made very personal movies here. He just treated the characters and world with more respect than anyone has before in the movies. I'd like to think the studio is smart enough to be able to see that's what's working, and hire someone else who normally makes great critically acclaimed dramas/thrillers to put together another "realistic" Batman movie. That'd be good enough. Let

I don't know, but I hope Catwoman is in it. I feel like it wouldn't be right to ignore that huge chunk of the Batman mythos. I think Catwoman is arguably one of the top villains (under the Joker, of course) in Batman's Rogues Gallery. And I could barely imagine Christopher Nolan's take on the character.

And I think he'll do another Batman. If he didn't, I would lose a bit of respect for the man for sort of abandoning the series like that.
