Kevin Smith says that working with Bruce Willis on Cop Out was "soul crushing"

01.19.2011

The word back in 2009 on what was going on during filming of the Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan comedy COP OUT was that things were very rough. Smith and Willis were not exactly getting along according to tabloids at the time, but much of that was dismissed as typical Hollywood rumor-mongering. Willis and his PR people called it all bullshit while even Smith himself downplayed much of the hoopla.

But in a recent interview on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast, Smith seemed to be downplaying nothing. Here's an excerpt from the interview, courtesy of FilmDrunk:

SMITH: "Look, I know the real story. One guy wouldn’t even sit for a f__kin’ poster shoot.”

MARON: “You don’t want to mention names all of a sudden?”

SMITH: “Everyone knows who it is. Put it this way, remember the really funny guy in the movie? It ain’t him. He’s a f__king dream. Tracy Morgan, I would lay down in traffic for. Were it not for Tracy, I might’ve killed myself or someone else in the making of that movie.”

MARON: “Honestly, you were given the gift of not having to tell your dad that Bruce Willis was a d_ck.”

SMITH: “I wish he could’ve just communicated it to me from the afterlife. It was difficult. I’ve never been involved in a situation like that where, one component is not in the box at all. It was f__kin soul crushing. I mean, a lot of people are gonna be like, ‘Oh, you’re just trying to blame the movie on him.’ No, but I had no f__king help from this dude whatsoever.”

Willis does this with every director now.

If you're not a big money, marquee director, then he makes your life miserable. Heard it from filmmakers and actors who've worked with him. Shame, really. Why do people get like that?

I don't doubt it for a second.

I've heard a lot of stories about Bruce Willis being a dick... Along with Garner, he and Richard Gere were about to actually kill each other on the set of The Jackal, and that's unusual behavior considering Gere is a Buddhist... They're usually so docile. I can't even believe that Willis, who's also known to be a Bible-totting republican, would work with Smith, Dogma... enough said. It's not a surprise the two would clash... And take into account, that for the exception of Tarantino and

He's a major star... is it unreasonable to think that he might have an ego and be difficult to work with?

It's weird that he's trying to blame it all on Bruce Willis. BW might have sleep walked through his performance but Tracey Morgan needed to be reigned in and that script sucked. Kevin Smith really should've chose a different project as his first just directing gig.

James Garner Already Said He Was Dick

He said he would never work with him again after Sunset(which was a shitty movie anyway). I still remember he said Willis thought he knew it all and was constantly changing line or complaining. If he was doing this on the set of a Blake Edwards film with a legend like Garner before Die Hard even came out, you damn well know he's a bigger asshole know then he was then.

"Kevin Smith can't direct and that's probably why Bruce didn't take to him very well." - terrible excuse. If Mr. Willis is working with a shitty director, he should just think about all the zeroes on that huge paycheck, and do his best. It's sad that the guy who plays John McClaine is an asshole. Oh well.

Kevin Smith is a whiny, small man

He's a one-note filmmaker who is shit when doing something outside of his narrow niche of stoner/slacker comedies. Cop Out is one such example. It was so by-the-numbers and unimaginatively filmed as to be, yes, soul-crushing. And why the hell did it need to be so freaking long? It seemed like it would never end as I sat watching it in theaters.

Pow! I just shit my pants!

Willis was a dick and if you listen to the podcast Smith doesn't lay all the blame on him, he mentions several reasons why he thinks it didn't do well and he even goes into why he agreed to make it in the first place.

I don't understand. Just because Bruce is an icon and childhood hero doesn't mean he gets a douche pass. Whatever you think of Smith, he doesn't seem like a hard guy to get along with it. It seems that Willis didn't want to take any direction at all from Smith. Nada. Just because he's not Martin Scorsese doesn't mean he's a director without a vision - he deserves some respect. When it comes to movies where people engage in conversation, Smith is a master of his craft. He should stick to those

Bruce is an icon...

and he's been one for over 20 years. There were both types of stories when he filmed Striking Distance in Pittsburgh 19 years ago. One day he went out of his way to take the fam to Kennywood and freely talked and signed autographs with people. Another was he was shitfaced in a bar up in New Castle. Yeah, he's on another level compared to a lot of us, but human nonetheless...

That was a good podcast to listen to. I recommend it. It also gives his comments a little more context.

I'm guessing Bruce Willis was the only one on set who realized this movie was a huge waste of time. He gets thumbs up from me.

I don't think smith is a good director OR a good writer. I'm not hating on him though, because all his movies are somewhat entertaining.

Love both the guys.

I pretty sure that Willis called Smith and suggested they work together after Smiths cameo in DH4. Smith was actually excited to get to work with Willis. Watch Smith speaking on Youtube. Dudes funnier than most comedians. Too bad it was a bad experience. It would be nice to see Willis in a movie that he actually enjoyed doing. The man just acts out the parts like its muscle memory.

Even as an ardent fan of most of Smith's work over the years, I can honestly say Cop Out was not a good movie. Is it a little bit classless for him to air this out now? Yes. However, Willis was visibly sleepwalking his way through that movie (it was really blatant in Red, too), and I do think he should be accountable for that. Neither of them are really in the right here.

Maybe if he (Smith) wasnt such an amateur, Willis wouldnt have appeared as a pain in the ass. Smith sees himself as so much more than what he really is, he must have thought Willis would kiss his feet for giving him a part in one of his films.

I thought Cop Out was a good, funny movie. Granted not Smith's best film, but I thought it was good for what it was.

I also think that Sean William Scott was the best part about the movie, but then they had to kill him off with a very, weird but funny death.

Read the whole thing and I have to agree with a poster over at FilmDrunk, shouldn't Smith have known what Willis was like since he had worked with him before? Why now call him an asshat?

Jesus Kevin...

I love ya man but can't you keep shit like that to yourself brother? The movie came out damn near a year ago. Some liked it, some didn't. I saw it and thought Bruce did a fine job along with Tracy.

Leave it be and stop talking shit about people especially when they're not there to defend themselves.

You DO realize that he's NOT blaming the failing of Cop Out on Bruce Willis right?

He's saying the guy's a pain in the ass to work with. And from what I understand, he IS. Granted he's fucking Bruce Willis, but that doesn't mean that he has the right to make the hundred other people working on the film's jobs any harder.

First he blames critics, next he blames the actors. Classy man.

I find it fascinating how long this dude can ride on the success of one movie made nearly 20 years ago.

Two Wrongs?

I like Kevin Smith movies, but I can find the man rather annoying at time. I removed him from twitter due to his whining and sly back stabbing.
I think he's had an easy ride up till now. He's had the pleasure of working with his buddies for so long, when it was time to work with a veteran/season actor like Bruce, he spits his pacifier out.
Bruce is Bruce, he's earned his right to do things his way.

Kevin Smith is the Sarah Palin of Hollywood. He just needs to learn to shut up and think about what he's saying. He's got a brain in there somewhere, he's just too busy letting his lips run the show.

I'm getting really tired of Kevin Smith. He's made some great films that I love (like Dogma, Chasing Amy, Clerks etc.) but everytime one of his movies bombs or sucks, he just can't help but point the finger at everyone but himself.

Before a movie is out, everything is great and he'll be complimenting everyone involved and how great everyone has been. The second the movie gets negative reviews, apparently everyone was against him. He did the same thing when Zack and Miri came out and he's

The problem with Cop Out wasn't Willis. It was the writing, the direction, the editing etc. All things that you should be responsible for as the director.

As the people below have said, he really needs to shut up.

The movie What Just Happened with Bobby Deniro does an interesting take on Hollywood actors and directors. Ironically Bruce Willis is the cry-baby, have to have everything done his way, actor in this film. I get the impression after seeing this film and reading this article that 99% of Hollywood is nothing but huge ego's and a bunch of whiney bitches that have to have everything done there way or else they will throw a fit like a two year old.
