Kon-Tiki helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will take on Pirates of the Caribbean 5

05.29.2013

Seems that the rumors were correct-- KON-TIKI helmers Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will be the men to take on the duties of directing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 5.

Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have signed off on the choice, and now negotiations will be quick and dirty. Okay, probably not dirty, but they will be quick.

We have no story details on the fifth installment of the franchise. Pirates, right? Something involving pirates. Last we left Captain Jack Sparrow in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN ON STRANGER TIDES, he was walking off into the sunset with Gibbs and ships in bottles. I'm sure someone can get the Black Pearl back to her original size. Where will he go next, there's no telling.

This is definitely a big job for Rønning and Sandberg, whose KON-TIKI was nominated for best foreign language film at the Oscars.

Prep for the film will be underway late this year or January 2014.

The choice of directors rarely bothers my potential to like a movie or not. Perhaps I'm just not a good enough fan of "the movies"...or perhaps I'm just someone who can watch a movie and enjoy it (or not) for what it is...regardless of the people in it or behind it. I remember knowing nothing of Dog Soldiers or District 9 when I first saw them ...didn't know the actors (well ...one of the soldiers in Dog Soldiers had a brief stint on a cheesy soccer series called Dream Team so I knew of him -

As for PoTC 5, as Nowheredan said, "However they do it, im sure it can't be worse than POTC4". Loved 1-3 but 4 ...would have been my least enjoyed movie that year at the cinema had Green Lantern not come out too.

Out of the current crop of "PART 5's" coming in the near future...

I'm probably looking forward to Mission: Impossible and Pirates Of The Caribbean the most. (imo...GHOST PROTOCOL was pure kick-ass entertainment & awesome from start to finish, ON STRANGER TIDES was the worst of all the Pirates films...so there's nowhere to go but up.)

And if another Terminator, post-"Salvation", gets the green light, hopefully the writers could finally start tying together the major plot-threads of the franchise (part 5 culminating in Reese being sent back to 1984 while

And if another Terminator, post-"Salvation", gets the green light, hopefully the writers could finally start tying together the major plot-threads of the franchise (part 5 culminating in Reese being sent back to 1984 while John Connor, C.Bale or not, finally declaring victory over the machines.)

And as for Indiana Jones & Rambo: Even though it's not even confirmed yet (until this year's San Diego Comic-Con...mark my words!) Harrison Ford will most likely be busy w/ Star Wars: Episode 7 for the next year or so. But I'm one of the few who loved "Crystal Skull" (except for the monkey's) so I'm game for whatever they get Dr. Jones to go after next...and who wouldn't love to see John Rambo kicking ass & cracking the skulls of yet another batch of dangerous enemies...foreign & domestic (now that he's returned to America) ?

Anyway, if anything..."Fast Five proved that w/ the right timing, writing, etc., that even a franchise well into it's FOURTH sequel can reignite fan interest & make some profit @ the box office. And Die Hard 5 (well...we all know how *THAT* shit turned out)

So Hollywood, please...take the time you need, hire the smartest people & get these 5th chapters of fan-favorites right!

Magnificent Seven Pirates

Have the fifth movie be an island is harassed by a gang of pirates, so the islanders hire seven other pirates (including Jack Sparrow) to protect them.

However they do it, im sure it can't be worse than POTC4. Good choice in directing

I would like to see...

Army Hammer as Tarzan team up with Jack Sparrow. Jack dresses Tarzan in a cowboy outfit and they get in all sorts of mischief and mayhem kinda like Abbot and Costello! But this time they are in the old West. Yeah buddy boy....I smell a mash up here.

I actually liked the fourth one, I found it to be surprisingly entertaining. Yeah, at times it did feel rote an had a bit of that "sequel for the sake of a sequel" thing going on, but I thought it was as fun as the first one and had some brilliant set pieces. The carriage escape? Blackbeard hanging his crew with the ship's rigging? The face-off between Barbossa and Jack on the teetering ship? The piranha mermaids? I liked it. I hope Ronning and Sandberg bring something fresh to the proceedings,

I hope Sparrow will be the only character back from the original. Well besides his crew. That way I can pretend like this is the first sequel and the other 3 never happened. ;-)

I think the POTC franchise has run it's course, as the 4th entry proved. I like McShane but his Blackbeard didn't bring anything to the movies that we didn't already see with Barbossa or Davy Jones, and Penelope Cruz didn't add much either. People complained about Bloom and Knightly in the first three, but they were a good balance to Jack Sparrow, in the same way Luke and Leia are to Han Solo. Disney should put their money in a franchise that deserves another installment, like a sequel to Tron:

Mickey Rourke for Captain Hook!

At this point I'm just happy there's a new POTC on the way. People are too critical of the franchise. I see it as a fun popcorn summer film. I'd be really excited if Captain Hook was introduced to the franchise as Jack Sparrow's new nemesis. And get Mickey Rourke to play him. Jesus, that would really get me excited. The chemistry on-screen would be intense!

I agree. Very fun franchise. Not the best plots or story but never a dull moment and beautiful to look at. Captain Hook would be awesome.

I would love to see Jack Sparrow go head to head with Captain Hook.

Nice. Kon-Tiki was so good and had such a great tropical look to it. I believe Pirates is in good hands and I'm actually really excited about this.

I have no idea who these guys are so I can't really say if I'm excited or not about this choice. I enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and thought it was the best film in the franchise since the original. I just hope that this fifth film is the last one in the franchise because I would like to see it go out on a high note like the fourth one left it even though it ended on a cliffhanger and I would like to see Depp step away from the franchises for awhile and do some more personal films like
