Legendary Pictures to sit down with Guillermo Del Toro about Pacific Rim 2

03.20.2014

Even before PACIFIC RIM was released last summer there were talks about a sequel, however it's been a while since we've had an update on what's going on with PACIFIC RIM 2. Guillermo Del Toro has previously said he'd like to do another movie and has shared a few ideas for a sequel, but is Legendary Pictures still interested in making PACIFIC RIM 2?

In a recent interview with Collider on the studio's new GODZILLA movie, Legendary CEO Thomas Tull was asked about the status of PACIFIC RIM 2.

"We love being in business with Guillermo and frankly that movie, if you look it up, did I think more business than the first X-Men, did more than Batman Begins, our first movie, did more than Superman Returns, The Fast and the Furious, Star Trek- so for a movie that was an original property that we made up it’s done really well. It did north of 400 million dollars globally and both the home video sales and the merchandise have way over-indexed, so it seems like fans really loved the world. So we’re going to sit down with Guillermo and as long as we think it’s authentic and there’s something to say, we’re certainly open to it."

Although PACIFIC RIM may have done more business than the movies listed above, I think it's fair to say the film still underperformed, at least in domestic theaters. And while some are huge fans of PACIFIC RIM, I know there are plenty of you who really disliked Guillermo Del Toro's last movie.

The bigger issue I see with PACIFIC RIM 2 actually happening though is Del Toro. He's a very busy dude, but he also is kind of a project collector, and while he might be interested in doing a sequel, who knows when it might happen. Maybe Del Toro can stay on as an executive director, and then he can pick who he wants to helm PACIFIC RIM 2. But before we get too excited about more Kaiju and Jaeger battles, we should probably wait and see how their conversation on PACIFIC RIM 2 goes first.

Pacific Rim was a predictable snore fest. I was never once on the edge of my seat nor was I ever really concerned that Charlie Hunnam would die. The CGI orgy was good, well detailed and of really good quality... but, what I felt I was watching was Transformers VS Godzilla. I just didn't connect with this film. I watched it once, and thought maybe I missed something so put it on again...and had to stop haflway through because no, I didn't miss anything, the movie just sucks.

Am I the only one who thinks that we should at least get an animated spinoff/sequel for this?

Pacific Rim was filled with gaping plothole after plothole big enough to drive a bus thru, but I still felt it was an enjoyable ride. I'm down for PR2 as long as it's in the far future and the original pilots are dead.

That concept art...

Must be from another movie. Maybe if it were a black rectangle covered in water droplets it would be more indicative of what the end product looked like. I won't even get into the plot, dialogue, and performances.

I enjoyed the first movie....though part of me thinks that has a lot to do with that great theme tune...that I've added to my workout playlist. I'd be happy for it to get a sequel but just wanted to comment on "I think it's fair to say the film still underperformed, at least in domestic theaters. Perhaps that is true....but more and more, it would seem the studious have the ability to now look beyond that - and thank god for that. Still, I think sites like this have a tendency to over hype

Still, I think sites like this have a tendency to over hype certain movies as opposed to others - think about all the articles in the build up to this movie...or Snakes on a Plane...or Gangster Squad those films then don't perform to expected levels and then it gets portrayed in a negative light. Go back and read the articles on this site (I don't really visit other sites) and then have a look at the posts underneath who more or less seem to agree with whatever was said in the article. May be we should try to manage expectations better. I've not looked at any Winter Soldier stuff for quite some time...for this exact reason...I want to go in as blind as possible...and enjoy it (I've learnt a valuable lesson about over expectations following what happened with Man of Steel).

Love the first one with a huge passion. I would rather see another Pacific Rim than another Dredd film.

If I had to choose...I'd go with Dredd and would tell the Pacific Rim people...there's no shame in losing out in this instance.

When it comes down to it, I think there's more potential in a Dredd movie, even though I did enjoy Pacific Rim a little more than Dredd.

I agree with the two replies. It is not that I dislike Del Toro, he's a fantastic director. I would rather see Del Toro invest his time in something different and better concept. "Dredd" has proven itself worthy in a time where most movies that flop as hard as it did during its theater run would never be considered for a sequel. "Dredd" made 25 million in the first week of DVD sales. Not bad for a movie that had zero marketing and only made a total of 13 million domestic.

I enjoyed both immensely, but overall I enjoyed Dredd and loved Pacific Rim.

I loved it. To me, it felt like one of those movies that was too amazing on paper to actually see the light of day, something that was too cool for any studio to actually believe in, counter-intuitive as it sounds. It's not an overblown, over-loud, over-dumb, overly patronising film and the comparison with the Hasbro toy-based movie franchise is understandable but inaccurate. It's definitely not a perfect movie, but I love how it embraced the earnestness, the imagination and the spectacle of

It's definitely not a perfect movie, but I love how it embraced the earnestness, the imagination and the spectacle of the genre, while giving many respectful nods to Tokusatsu, manga and anime. I know many have called it a rip-off of Evangelion, but to me it felt like a re-packaging of ideas, a distillation that made them more palatable to audiences at large, perhaps a little like what Danny Boyle did with Slumdog Millionaire, which wasn't done strictly in a Bollywood style but did homage that.

The first one really sucked

Come on. Pacific Rimjob was just lame. Let it go, move on to the other million projects you've been talking about, Guillermo.

I don't give a fuck who stands behind the camera

as long as Charlie hunnam and Rinko Kikeuchi don't stand in front of it.

Given how excited del Toro was for Pacific Rim (more so than any other projects of his I can recall), I have a feeling he'll jump back on board for a sequel as long as they give him a budget he feels he can work with.

Pacific Rim was one of those movies that if any other directer made the same movie, scene for scene, line for line, no one, especially on this site would've like it. No one can ever convince me otherwise. I'm a huge fan of letting movie magic happen, and plot holes fall by the wayside. But this movie was garbage. The laundry list of crap, from bad acting, to a boring plot that made no sense at all, to slow fight scenes. Can't understand it.

I agree and disagree. I AGREE that if anyone else would've made it everyone would say it sucks. Any other movie that is in any way similar (big action, simple story - transformers 3, 300 sequel etc) people (and this site) hate on, but since its GDT they seem to forgive everything bad about Pacific Rim.

I disagree that it was garbage. That is too strong a word. I had fun watching the film and my only negatives is that the movie is way too long and the action was only at night so it was hard

I love GDT but even I was a bit let down by Pacific Rim, but I still love Hellboy 2.

As much as I'd like to see Pacific Rim 2, I think Hellboy 3 should be Guillermo's priority.
