Mickey Rourke wants to be Genghis Khan

04.24.2010

Mickey Rourke has been working like a maniac ever since his comeback in THE WRESTLER (or SIN CITY, it could be argued), but he's not going to rest until he takes over a country or two.

Rourke apparently plans to portray Mongolian ruler Genghis Khan in a biopic (despite not being even remotely Asian, unless you count whatever is up with his eyes now), and with writer-director John Milius (CONAN THE BARBARIAN, RED DAWN).

As Rourke tells the Orlando Sentinel: "I read his script and you know, the man is known for his tough writing. He wrote CONAN and DIRTY HARRY and APOCALYPSE NOW, and it’ll be interesting to see how he works behind the camera. I’m playing Genghis. John wrote as a piece told from the son and grandson’s point of view, how they saw this mythic figure from their family. You see him in flashbacks, back when he was in his mid-40s. And back then, being in your mid-40s was being REALLY old."

Rourke says that the project will require him to train in horseback riding and archery, and will film in India and China. He goes on to mention that his planned hitman drama ST. VINCENT, with his JOHNNY HANDSOME collaborator Walter Hill, is no longer happening.

The infamous Genghis Khan was a Mongolian general and emperor in the 12th and 13th centuries, known for his military leadership, cruelty and a supposed love of dogs. He conquered vast portions of northern China and southwestern Asia before visiting modern day San Dimas for a high school history report.

Extra Tidbit: Several years ago, Steven Seagal planned to star as the warlord in his own Genghis Khan project. With the mob.

Y'know, the whole 'white guy playing Genghis Khan' thing has been done before. Hasn't it? Yeah, I seem to remember he was played by this guy, oh what was his name.....damn, it's right on the tip of my tongue.

Some Ideas I've Noticed On Another Site

Donnie Yen as Batman or Superman....or a black or Asian actor as John Kennedy or George Washington.

(In a previous post, I already thought that Morgan Freeman would be great as Lincoln with a little make-up).

Rourke as another Khan.

Rourke actually would be a good "KHAN" is they ever entered the character into the new STAR TREK films.

This is odd...

..seeing as there was JUST a film about Genghis Khan called Mongol released less than a year ago(?). But I guess that wasn't the high-profile / big-budget type. I like Mickey Rourke and the quality of his work but seriously, just because he's got the "samurai haircut" doesn't mean he can just choose to play one of the most infamous and iconic warmongers of all time! I'm sure he'll do an amazing job at it, but lets me reasonable here, shall we?

How about a sequel to Barfly? Chinaski finally hits it at the track and gets plastic surgery to fix the pot marks from all the boils he had on his face as a kid. Lipo-Suck for all my friends!

This is a bad idea...

Wow....

Just wow....

I like Mickey Rourke as an actor, but....

Wow...

Why can't the role be produced for an Asian actor?

It's yellowface for the 21st century.

I guess we'll have Julia Roberts or Keira Knightley(sp?) as Anna May Wong next, or Robert Downey Jr. as Chairman Mao Tse-Tung....

I would say Robert Downey Jr. as Martin Luther King Jr., or Meryl Streep as Angela Davis....but I don't think blacks (like myself) would necessarily go for that.

However, we could move

However, we could move on...and have Morgan Freeman as say...Abraham Lincoln.

I already look forward to a black actor portraying Superman or Batman. (I know some of the white fanboys looking forward to Rourke playing an Asian are not looking forward to that--actors of color portraying The Dark Knight and The Man of Steel--even though you know it's going to happen someday; albeit, Superman and Batman are fictional characters unlike Khan or Lincoln).

Forgot to include this in my previous comment, but there's already an epic film about Genghis Khan & it's the only Khan film you'll ever need: [link]

I thought it couldn't get any worse than jake gyllenhaal playing a Persian, but I see I'm wrong. Why can't someone like Ken Watanabe, or Chow Yun Fat play this part? Anyone who's not white! This is fucking idiotic.

No Thanks

Rourke is alright, but just alright. He works in small doses and for certain roles. I know he's become a fanboy fave recently but that doesn't mean he's right for Genghis Kahn. Mongolian or not.

WTF... neither his face nor his constitution is Asian... not to mention Mongolian horses are tiny, they couldn't even carry such a huge ripped guy. Nice job throwing every ounce of historical accuracy out the window in advance.

He may not be Asian, but neither was John Wayne in the godawful 'The Conqueror'--a film that fell flat partially because of Wayne being American and mostly because it was just poorly done.

you got a point with the horses and all. But I don't think him not being asian should prevent this movie from happening

@ AnnaDraconida:
Too, it's a double standard. I think some of these fanboys would have a fit if an Asian or black actor portrayed a figure history who was white.

This is horrible news. He looks nothing like Khan and by that, this would be horrible casting. I like Mickey Rourke and am disappointed that his St. Vincent movie is no more. That movie sounded good.

No

I like Mr. Rourke and all, but NO. In fact, someone should punch him in the face for even thinking about playing Khan.
