New car-flipping trailer for Getaway starring Ethan Hawke, Selena Gomez, and John Voight

Aug. 20, 2013by: Paul Shirey

A new high-speed trailer for GETAWAY has zoomed online courtesy of Warner Bros. and it looks like one hell of a smash and grab. Cheesy, high-octane, and filled with mass vehicular carnage, GETAWAY looks to have all the trimmings of a tight and fun car chase flick, especially when you toss in Ethan Hawke as the lead and John Voight as the villain. Hawke has a ferocious intensity when he turns up the volume and I get a little goosebumpy when he starts yelling at folks as he does in this new trailer. Could you imagine a customer service complaint from Hawke?

Put it in gear:

Here's the synopsis:

Former race car driver Brent Magna (Hawke) is pitted against the clock. Desperately trying to save the life of his kidnapped wife, Brent commandeers a custom Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake, taking it and its unwitting owner (Gomez) on a high-speed race against time, at the command of the mysterious villain holding his wife hostage.

Simple premise, simple concept, simple fun. That's what I'm hoping for, anyway. I know that a lot of folks are viewing Selena Gomez as a stain on this one, but I'm more than willing to overlook it if her role is more than a hood rat hacker with a heart of gold or something. She certainly has displayed her desire to branch out from the Disney Junior crowd of late, starting with SPRING BREAKERS, so perhaps this is just another step into some more grown-up material. Either way, I continue to be intrigued by GETAWAY. Plus, I'm just a sucker for explosions and car chases, so there's that.

GETAWAY hits the road on August 30, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I'm perfectly fine with Hawke going down the leading-man action lane. He's got the chops for it and I hope he continues to ratchet it up. Do you think Hawke can handle it?

No thanks

There's dozens of movies like this that have been done better, and probably have better *daytime* stunts. I don't need to see the 2013 iteration of "good guy forced to do bad things at the behest of ransomer on the phone" movie. Besides - I pretty much saw every conceivable plot point in that trailer... unless it takes some surreal turn towards David Lynch in the 3rd act.

The risk-averse decisions to make movies around a pitch and casting we discussed yesterday Paul? That's exactly what this

The risk-averse decisions to make movies around a pitch and casting we discussed yesterday Paul? That's exactly what this looks like. Pick a generic movie type, and the right time of year, and then cast it to get the broadest demographic possible. Gomez, Voight, and Hawke - that's pretty much trying to draw from across all age groups - because this movie won't appeal strongly to any demographic except the boys and young men who want to see a car-oriented action flick. If it opens against a weak field, it even has a chance of being sleeper hit, and then we'll see one or two more sequels.

"There's dozens of movies like this that have been done better"

You don't know that... yet. I've seen enough films that, beforehand, gave me the same feeling that you're having about this one and then ended surprising the shit out of me to not dismiss these types of flicks that easy. Especially with pretty good trailers like this one.

Im Confused

Didnt the first trailer, or at least one of the 90 sneak peaks they have released, show that Gomez was a car theif trying to steal the car? And then Hunt is told to kill her but refuses? Im almost positive.

agreed. i saw a preview in front of a movie (cant remember which) and it seemed like the whole theater laughed when she popped up as a carjacker. maybe this was a common reaction everywhere and they perhaps did some quick reshoots and edits to make it different? who knows. I know its a redbox rental, at best, for me. with a free code.

Ughhh, freaking Selena Gomez

No thanks. I love Ethan Hawke, he makes some great movie choices, but for God's sake, seeing Selena Gomez in this just made me roll my eyes and say no thanks.

One car Ethan Hawke should stay far away from driving is the leopard-print Audi belonging to Ms. Gomez's ex-boyfriend. [link] Yikes. That said, I do like the idea of Ethan Hawke making his way into leading man action hero territory.

Much better than the first trailer

I actually think this looks like a decent late summer time waster and will probably catch it theatrically.
