Some new snaps have surfaced of the Channing Tatum swords and sandals epic THE EAGLE OF THE NINTH, from director Kevin MacDonald (TOUCHING THE VOID, THE LAST KING OF SCOTLAND). They're very, for lack of a better way of describing them, GLADIATOR-esque.

From our own Upcoming Movies section: "The Eagle of the Ninth is set in the dangerous world of second-century Britain. In 140 AD, twenty years after the unexplained disappearance of the entire Ninth Legion in the mountains of Scotland, young centurion Marcus Aquila (Channing Tatum) arrives from Rome to solve the mystery and restore the reputation of his father, the commander of the Ninth. Accompanied only by his British slave Esca (Jamie Bell), Marcus sets out across Hadrian’s Wall into the uncharted highlands of Caledonia – to confront its savage tribes, make peace with his father’s memory, and retrieve the lost legion’s golden emblem, the Eagle of the Ninth."

NINTH is set to open sometime in 2010 and along with Tatum stars Jamie Bell, Mark Strong, Denis O'Hare, and Donald Sutherland. Check out the rest of the pics RIGHT HERE.

Extra Tidbit: Confession Time - I wasn't exactly sober when I saw G.I. JOE (i.e. I was trashed) and Channing Tatum only lasted a whole 3 minutes in PUBLIC ENEMIES. I've also not been privy to such films as STEP UP and FIGHTING. Basically, I've never coherently seen Tatum act. So I guess my question is: Would this guy be any good in a film like this?

Ugh. He's incapable of smiling. Even Christian Bale, king of the brooding scowl, has the facial muscles to smile. Tatum is pretty awful to watch, honestly.

I just think he's difficult to direct
I think Tatum is probably an actor who's very hard to direct, but has all the tools necessary to give a good performance. You just really have WORK at it to get him to actually function.

Tatum is a decent actor, especially opposite The Beef in A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints. But this looks EXACTLY like Gladiator, in a silly way. Hell, his name is even Marcus! But eh, who knows, maybe it will rock.

Channing Tatum isn't bad. With a good director he can really act... but even if this was the case I can still see Jamie Bell acting circles around him. Bell is just in a different league. I'd be surprised if he DOESN'T get an Oscar nom in the next couple of years.

kevin macdonald is not a first time director - he's an Oscar-winning documentarian, and he directed the last king of scotland and state of play.

There's Kevin Macdonald, director of "The Last King of Scotland," and then there's Kevin McDonald, director of this.

Check Him Out...
in "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints". He did a great job in that movie and the film proves that he is very capable of being a good actor.
