New images and IMAX featurette for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Oct. 3, 2013by:

Like it or not, the movie to beat in terms of box office this fall/winter movie season is THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE. With a massive built-in audience from both the books and first film, not to mention fans of Jennifer Lawrence, it has been predicted to be the biggest movie of the year in terms of numbers. Whether or not the movie is any good is another story altogether, but it does have a lot going for it this time out, particularly adding director Francis Lawrence (I AM LEGEND) to the mix and having the tributes be seasoned veterans for their "battle royale" for the 75th Hunger Games. Today, we have a smattering of new images and an IMAX featurette, which highlights the film's use of the format, which is kind of cool as it doesn't kick in until they hit the fighting grounds.

Here's the featurette:

And, here's the images:

I didn't get into the first film all that much, but felt that Lawrence was great as Katniss and that it was perfectly harmless in terms of story, unlike the last YA franchise, TWILIGHT, which was mostly insulting in every sense of the word. THE HUNGER GAMES definitely has more crossover appeal, though, so we'll see how well it fares with the second entry. We know it'll make money, but will it be more than just harmless entertainment? We'll see.

THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE hits theaters on November 22, 2013.

ROFL

So you pay to go see an IMAX movie and they don't go IMAX until the arena starts which I am guessing is going to be like 40 to 50 minutes into the movie. WOOT! Yah
Hollywood does it again, milk the dollar out of our pockets without providing a service. Well my dollar will be staying with me.

You realize that most movies shown in IMAX theaters don't actually use the format, right. TDK was the first narrative to use it and and it only totaled 35 minutes of true 70mm film stock footage. Hardly a rip off.

I like the first movie

and I suspect I'll like this one too. Jennifer Lawrence killed in this role, as did Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Donald Sutherland. Not as buzzed with Josh Hutcherson although he did nail the one scene where he confessed his alleged love for Katniss. The supporting cast for this film looks damn good, too. Give me a director who knows how to shoot action scenes, and I'll be satisfied.

Jennifer Lawrence is looking prettier and prettier. I'm of the conviction that there is a whole lot more to the Hunger Games than there is to Twilight; there is no comparison. And according to many fans of the book, there's a social commentary element which is yet to be fully mined and that I hope gets explored to the full in the next three instalments of the film series.

It's odd. I never thought I would be looking forward to a movie with such a large teen fanbase, but there's definitely a sense of maturity within this series--especially judging from the trailer. I'm looking forward to seeing this.
