Updated:Official! ABC picks up Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. for series!

May. 10, 2013by: Paul Shirey

UPDATE: Agent I.D. cards added! Scan below!

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a go! ABC has picked up the Joss Whedon produced show and given it a series order. It shouldn't be that surprising, given the clout that THE AVENGERS and actor Clark Gregg bring to the show, but there's no guarantee when sizing up a new show on a major network. Today saw some cancellations (Burn Notice, Southland, Go On) and one renewal (Community), so it's never really clear who will stay, go, or never see the light of day.

Here's the official description of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (and a cast photo):

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvels feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulsons team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet).

From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (Marvels The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot co-writers (Dollhouse, Dr.Horribles Sing-Along Blog); Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias); and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) comes Marvels first TV series. Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

No word on an air date, but a new "Hulktastic" promo for the show is set to air this Sunday during Once Upon A Time's finale. We'll update here as soon as it's online.

Extra Tidbit: I'm super stoked for this. Anyone not?

With Spartacus now done and dusted...I needed another show to fill the vacant spot in my quota of f*king triple awesomeness that I watch on tv...the others being TWD and Arrow. It seems that the position has now been filled.

ill check it out but....

what worries me is wheadons involvement.
any past tv show i can think of really doesnt appeal to me, also his films dont either.

coulson was easily the best part of phase one, so ill check it out for him.
but i doubt this will break my top ten shows.

Just a theory...from a fanboy w/ FAR too much time on his hands

Since Joss Whedon, & most comic-book's in general, absolutely *LOVE* killing off fan - favorite characters that we've grown to love over a number of films / episodes / issues, (I'm a Leaf On The Wind...RIP Hoban) wouldn't it be a little funny, awesome and / or "HAHA! IT WAS RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU THE WHOLE TIME!" if the expiration dates on the S.H.I.E.L.D. ID tags foreshadowed the day / date that "that" character meets his/her demise?

So, assuming "AOS" begins it's 1st season in Fall 2013,

So, assuming "AOS" begins it's 1st season in Fall 2013, also ABC's placement on it's primetime schedule & if the series survives long enough...:

Leo Fitz: Feb. 5 2018 (Monday) - Fifth Season
Melinda May: Sept. 4 2019 (Wednesday) - Seventh Season
Grant Ward: Sept. 9 2015 (Wednesday) - Third Season
Jemma Simmons: Feb. 5 2018 (Monday) - Fifth Season
...And finally Phil Coulson (Again?): Apr. 25 2015 (Monday) - End of Season 2 AND...1 week before "The Avengers 2" is released.

Did anyone notice agent Coulson's serial number is different than the rest? His starts with SKJ and has the letter U in the digits...

SKrull Undercover, maybe? Or nothing, who knows yet? I am excited to give it a chance. Once Upon a Time isn't allthat bad (and Regina is freakin in hot in a very "bad girl" way).

Maria Hill

I thought I read How I met your mother was ending this year. They should really get that actress who plays Maria Hill on this show, if not this season than season 2. She didn't have much to do in Avengers and with the casts of the phase 2 films getting larger I'm not sure how much screen time she'll be getting. At the very least, you'd have another recognizable face in this show.

NBC-Universal casts Laurence Fishbourne, Hugh Dancy, and Mads Mikkleson for Hannibal. Disney-Marvel proves yet again that money is no object and cast huge names like...Brett Dalton, Iain De Caestecker, and Chloe Bennet for S.H.I.E.L.D.

Whedon likes to have relatively unknown names for his shows, so that it's easier to make the actor disappear behind the character (beside, with no star, you know he can kill whoever he wants more easily)...
Then, of course, they become part of the 'Whedon Family' and he tries to use them in in all his other projects...

People are expecting too much...

This isn't going to be a vehicle to show off superheroes and villains. This is going to be very similar to a Disney show (obviously this is aimed towards teens by the casting) and I expect people will be severely disappointed with the end results. If you go into it expecting a sitcom in the vein of Wizards of Waverly place then you might enjoy it.

Martinphipps posed something interesting

I think this show will be good, def something worth checking out, but as far as the rights to characters go does it only count on the big screen, could there be mention of mutants and spiderman, the FF on the tv show since its not a movie? Disney XD's Avengers cartoon had everyone in it, but would, could they do that with a live action tv show, anyone know how the rights work? could marvel have found a loophole?

S.H.I.E.L.D. monitors potential threats. ALL potential threats.

"The world is filling up with people who can't be matched. People we can't control."
--Nick Fury in the Avengers

That sounds a lot like a reference to "the mutant problem" to me. In the comics, Fury's relationship to the X-Men or the Fantastic Four was, unofficially, very similar to his relationship with the Avengers. If the Avengers were busy dealing with an extraterrestrial threat, Fury might speak to Reed Richards.

In the comics, Fury's relationship to the X-Men or the Fantastic Four was, unofficially, very similar to his relationship with the Avengers. If the Avengers were busy dealing with an extraterrestrial threat, Fury might speak to Reed Richards. If the threat involved mutants then Fury would go ask Professor Xavier for information and if Professor Xavier sent the X-Men to deal with the threat and then S.H.I.E.L.D. was never officially involved. Having alternatives to the Avengers would come in handy if the threats came from rogue nations like Lativaria or Genosha, countries that might object to the Avengers showing up and basically staging a coup.

"A man with mechanical arms. We need a name for him. Doctor Strange? No, that's taken."
--J. Jonah Jameson in Spiderman 2

The TV show can probably mention Lativaria or Genosha without upsetting Fox. There's the precedence set with the TV show Smallville: it lasted ten seasons and over those ten seasons we saw Impulse, Cyborg, Aquaman, Mera, Supergirl, Green Arrow, Zatanna, Martian Manhunter, Black Canary, Stargirl, Dr. Fate, Hawkman and Sandman plus four members of the Legion in addition to Smallville versions of all of Superman's rogues (before he even became Superman). There were even hints of a bigger universe: a flashback scene in the two-parter Absolute Justice showed the hand of a man with a Lantern ring and a newspaper headline once read "Queen of Themyscira to address UN" where Themyscira is also known as Paradise Island. Smallville couldn't use the Flash, Wonderwoman, Batman or Green Lantern because DC was developing movie versions for each of them and they didn't want one version of the Justice League on TV and another in the movies but the CW worked around this limitation and I think ABC can do likewise.

well i know it worked on smallville, but thats becuz cw is owned by wb who owns all their characters, ive been saying all along thats the ONE thing WB/DC has Marvel doesnt, the rights to all their characters, I'm hoping ABC can get away with it, you hgave to imagine eventually Marvel will get all their properties back and be able to introduce them into their universe, it would def be cool to see quicksivler and scarlet witch introduced on the show so you can atleast hint at their back story

This could work.

Imagine they are investigating a crime scene.

"Coulson! Look at this! Something cut right through this!"
"Hmm. Three incisions roughly two inches apart."
"What do you think was used?"
"Adamantium. That's the only material that could cut through metal like that."
"So HE was here."
"Apparently."
"Should we send a team to question him?"
"Actually, no. He gets a big nervous when men with guns show up. I'll have Nick give the Professor a call. Maybe we can get this cleared up."

That would be great, dropping hints at a bigger universe, I know Fox has the movie rights, but what about tv? Disney XD's Avnegers cartoon had Wolverine, Spiderman and the FF, so the TV rights may be different? In Which case you could easily hint at stuff like that, even talk about quicksilver and scarlett witches origins and mention their father as long as its not in the movie, just on the small screen, THAT WOULD BE AWESOME,

The idea of a SHEILD tv show taking placing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exciting, but to be honest I'm going to have to wait until I see the first episode before I judge it.

I think putting the pilot on tv before ordering a series is what networks should do that way you know how the fans feel and don`t blow your wad on bs
