Phil Lord and Chris Miller say Jump Street/Men in Black crossover may happen

01.14.2015

Remember last month when the Sony email hacks revealed that the studio had the insane idea to crossover the 22 JUMP STREET and MEN IN BLACK franchises? Yeah, we laughed and figured the suits at the studio were drinking during lunch and reading too much fan fiction, but it may not be a completely insane idea.

In an interview with MTV, writer/directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller responded to whether there was any chance the crossover could happen. Here was their response.

“Nothing’s changed. It’s still a crazy idea, and we only do things that seem like they’re going to be terrible… We’re really focusing on what’s a great story for Schmidt and Jenko and how to tell the next chapter in their lives. And perhaps use creatures from another world at the same time!”

Now, Lord and Miller are funny guys, so this could be just their way of messing with a reporter, but they also didn't totally rule it out. Despite being an action comedy, the JUMP STREET films still operate in a somewhat realistic world. To take Jenko and Schmidt and put them in a completely supernatural setting would require some major suspension of disbelief. But, hey, if we believe Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are high school/college aged, why not alien fighting secret agents?

It is also interesting to note that 22 JUMP STREET screenwriter Oren Uziel was being sought by Sony to draft MEN IN BLACK 4. Maybe that connection helped foster this crazy tangent? Who knows but do not be surprised if this movie actually happens. I would say crazier things have happened, but this could very well be the craziest.

Let's take two unnecessary sequels and mash them together!

Everyone's tired of the MIB franchise, trying to transplant chemistry from one successful comedy into another is a horrible idea. Lazy and desperate, this is why Sony Pictures is failing to keep up with its competition

Lazy, stupid, and unnecessary. Why tarnish two franchises that still have plenty to offer on their own? I'm not saying the shit won't be funny, but still, what a waste of time and talent.

This is either pure genius or complete insanity...

I can't figure out which, or if I even like the idea... but I'll damn sure be seeing it if it ever happens.

Sony looks to be currently loosing their most successful franchise, Spider-Man.

Why don't you take two already established franchises that have nothing to do with each other and jam them together killing them both at the same time! If they lost Bond the studio would be doomed.

Sony isn't going to lose Spider-man, they're simply going to give him over to Marvel temporarily. If you think Sony is getting rid of Spider-man, you're wrong. They're going to get paid for every movie Marvel uses him in, guaranteed.

I hope not. It's not like both franchises aren't doing well that they would need this to happen.

Was it 22 Jump Street where Schmidt says to a love rival...that's the Men in Black movie you're describing?

Considering the barometer for "qualified" that has been established to become an MIB agent, I could believe Jenko and Schmidt being recruited. Yes, it's stupid, but has the MiB franchise ever been intelligent? Between the sucessful transition of the Fast and Furious franchise from cheesy racing to "gritty" PG-13 espionage epics and the fake sequels we saw trailers for at the end of 22 Jump Street, a Men in Black cross-over re-boot/sequel isn't really all that unrealistic.
