Quentin Tarantino puts out his Top Ten Movies of 2013 (so far)

Oct. 6, 2013by: Paul Shirey

The enigmatic DJANGO UNCHAINED director, Quentin Tarantino, has released his Top Ten movies of 2013 (so far) and it's the usual ecclectic and interesting mix as he's delivered in past years. Some of his selections aren't quite that surprising, with flicks like GRAVITY, BEFORE MIDNIGHT, BLUE JASMINE, and even THIS IS THE END, fitting squarely within the bounds of what you might think he'd like. The surprises are interesting, especially with THE LONE RANGER and KICK-ASS 2, but when you really think about it, they're pretty consistent with his tastes. A hyper-violent comic book movie with a lot of colorful profanity and  a vastly misunderstood and loathed western? Sounds right up Tarantino's alley.

Here's the full roster:

1.  AFTERNOON DELIGHT (Jill Soloway)
2.  BEFORE MIDNIGHT (Richard Linklater)
3.  BLUE JASMINE (Woody Allen)
4.  THE CONJURING (James Wan)
5.  DRINKING BUDDIES (Joe Swanberg)
6.  FRANCES HA (Noah Baumbach)
7.  GRAVITY (Alfonso Cuarón)
8.  KICK-ASS 2 (Jeff Wadlow)
9.  THE LONE RANGER (Gore Verbinski)
10.  THIS IS THE END (Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg)

It's to note that these are listed in alphabetical order, so this may not be the actual ranking of best to worst, but merely an alphabetized list of favorites. I always find it compelling to hear what other filmmakers enjoy, as oftentimes they aren't quite as vocal about their tastes, either out of fear or respect for their peers.

What do you think about Tarantino's list so far?

I loved Kick Ass 2, and I'm so glad This Is The End is on there instead of the atrociously awful At The World's End that people seemed to enjoy? more because it's "cheeky." Also if the Lone Ranger can out 2003 instead of Pirates, and Pirates where to come out this year everyone would hate Pirates. Just glad to see someone entertained by more for entertainments sake, and not just to whine that it's not artsy enough or some crap. And no I'm not A Q.T. fanboy, I only like Django and Kill Bill

So, this only proves one thing.
If I say that The Lone Ranger is a good movie (I actually haven't seen it), I have bad taste in movies.
If it's Tarantino saying it, it proves his eclectic taste for movies.
Oh, Life....

Hahahahaha

I love to watch people flock to Tarantino's pretentious bullshit movie rankings like it has anything to do with anything other than perpetuating the Tarantino as eccentric genius narrative he and his hangers on love to belabor. It was interesting around '94-'95 when he was putting out stuff that mattered and wasn't trying SO hard to make a Quentin Tarantino movie. Then it became obvious he has nothing to say about anything except other movies, and that his movies are utterly redundant.

If you loved The Lone Ranger it's because you're an easy-to-please simpleton with shitty taste, and not because you're a genius auteur in waiting. Neither was he. He just got other simpletons to believe it.

Yep, he's just like every other auteur out there. They all watch other people's work. They all have movies and TV shows and comic books and operas and hieroglyphics that they praise for feeding into their own personal taste spectrum. Tarantino isn't the only director out there with a Top Ten list, but, admittedly, he has a bigger following than most.

Don't really understand the backlash against The Lone Ranger, so I'm glad that someone of Tarantinos status is actually recognizing this slightly flawed but entertaining film.

I'm a long-time Tarantino fan, I adore his films, but I'll be the first to say that his taste in movies sometimes ranges from peculiar to downright awful. Having said that, the dude makes spectacular cinema so I couldn't give less of a fuck.

you can tell by his movies how much he loves movies of all genres & I think it shows in his list, there's a wide variety of different films

Saw 3 movies on that list, no interest in the others. I respect his opinion, but don't always agree. I think Quentin needs to see New World. I somehow think that would end up on his list.

Slow news day

We're still three three months till end of the year and we're talking top 10 movies already. I suggest they should make it a regular column titled "Quentin's Top 10 movies as of this week"

Kick-Ass 2 sucked.

And I didn't see it, but nothing about The Lone Ranger appeals to me. I like(d) Johnny Depp, but his big behemoth blockbusters and Jerry Bruckheimer shit haven't really floated my boat (pun intended, I guess) since the first Pirates. I never even watched the sequels, I just knew I wouldn't like them. I don't usually do that with films, either, but... anyway, I'm rambling, aren't I? Kick-Ass 2 was truly dreadful - it lacked whatever wit Matthew Vaughn's predecessor had and childishly amped up

Also, frankly, it just wasn't as good as the original.

Just wanted to point out that Matthew Vaughn was the predecessor. Like you, though, I didn't bother with the POTC sequels, though I'm not a bit surprised Tarantino liked The Lone Ranger.

That's actually a really good list so far. The only one I haven't seen out of that is Lone Ranger. It's interesting that's on there now I'm curious to check it out despite it getting bashed

Overrated director. I'm not sure why so many on this site adore him. He's made a few good movies...but doesn't deserve the royal treatment he consistently gets.

Totally agree with you, Vong. These dildos act like you shit on their dad if you call a juvenile hack like Tarantino or Kevin Smith a hack.

So umm ...

Where's The World's End? Far superior to This is the End. Did his bromance with Edgar Wright have a hiccup this year?

Seems like an ok list, and what I would expect from Tarantino. Lone Ranger isn't in my top 10, but I liked it a lot and was sorry to see it did poorly. I would love for Tarantino to work with Depp soon and give him a come back after his Disney/Burton phase.

I don't know why you red-barred that. Or why so many people thumbed you down. But I agree with the post, and with the distinction in general.

Not Surprised By The Lone Ranger Making His List

As stated in the article, Tarantino usually has an "out there" pick. I remember seeing him on Kimmel or Ferguson singing the praises of Domino. If there is one director that should get to program his own movie network, it's Tarantino.

Really happy to see Before Midnight on his list. By far the best film of the year in my opinion.

And also great to see The Conjuring and Lone Ranger on their as well.

Wow

Love QT and his lists. But I despised blue jasmine. All of the characters are really terrible people except for the sister's greasy b/f. I haven't seen everything on his list, but I was pretty disappointed with kick-ass 2, and 1 is one of my favorite movies. I also like the comics. I'm glad the Lone Ranger got some love. It's not gonna be on my list, but the ending is an incredible action piece that's a throw back to Chaplin. The skill involved in that is worth watching the movie alone...even
