Ralphie himself producing A Christmas Story: The Musical

12.01.2010

As the "Elf" musical kicks off on Broadway this holiday season, another Christmas musical could be coming to the Great White Way. Peter Billingsley, who directed COUPLES RETREAT and produced IRON MAN and ZATHURA, is producing a musical adaptation of A CHRISTMAS STORY, the film he also starred in.

Billingsley, who made a career for himself starring as Ralphie in the 1983 Christmas classic, is launching a preview of the musical later this month in Seattle with hopes to bringing it all the way to Broadway. While the musical will obviously follow events in the film, it will also focus on some of the other aspects of Jean Shepherd's short stories that didn't make the movie.

One thing you can count on is the major award: Billingsley says, "Just think about the idea of a leg-lamp kickline."

A list of songs in the musical hasn't been announced but lurking around the just launched official site it seems a "Fa-Ra-Ra-Ra-Ra" song and a "I Triple Dog Dare You" song appear to be in the works.

Kinda sounds like a cornball idea to me (who can imagine Darren McGavin's old man breaking out into song?), but hey, it's the holiday season.

Extra Tidbit: Which would you rather see: The SPIDER-MAN musical or the CHRISTMAS STORY musical?

No box for neither eh?

I basically have given up w/movies remaking everything but the bit I saw of the "Spiderman" musical was totally lame. If they dare remake "Christmas Story" as a movie then officially there is no shame. NO if the remake "Citizen Kane" that would make my head explode.

It's Christmas, but very little about "A Christmas Story" seems to lend itself easily to musical numbers. It's too quaint and down-to-earth. Now I didn't check out the preview of Spider-Man, but I can totally see a red man flying around singing about his crush on the girl next door.

Sadly...

Christmas Story all the way. Spider-man looks to cringeworthy to be any good. Plus I've sat through the film like four run-thrus straight. Granted, I was also watching Adult Swim on the side, but it's all good I suppose.

For a second there I thought this was a musical remake (in film form) of A Christmas Story. I don't give a fuck what they do on broadway or whatever, seeing as how I've never been and don't plan on it.

I'd rather see the Christmas Story musical, the Spiderman musical has disaster written all over it. The only thing I can come up with is that Bono and the Edge saw the Producers and thought that sounded like a good way to make some extra money.
