Updated! Ridley Scott and Fox are "freaking out" about the state of Prometheus 2

Mar. 27, 2013by:

UPDATE: Damon Lindelof has provided a response via SlashFilm. See his comments below.

While it disappointed many, I still really liked PROMETHEUS. The movie reunited Ridley Scott with the world of science fiction and took a very ambitious approach to the ALIEN universe. Sure, it had some plot holes, but it was left open for a potential sequel. Okay, so maybe the sequel wasn't necessary, but you can't really make a movie in Hollywood these days unless it is a potential franchise.

It had already been confirmed that PROMETHEUS 2 was being targeted for a release date sometime around 2014 or 2015, but at the end of 2012, screenwriter Damon Lindelof announced he would not be joining the returning Ridley Scott, Michael Fassbender, and Noomi Rapace for the second film. The original screenplay for PROMETHEUS was written by Jon Spaihts before Lindelof was brought in to bring the film less directly in line with the ALIEN series. With Lindelof leaving, his direction for the story is pretty much lost.

According to Bloody Disgusting, Ridley Scott and Fox executives are "freaking out" and looking for any and all possible ideas to continue with the sequel. PROMETHEUS was left open-ended enough that the film can be left without a sequel, but why not try and make a ton of money on sn established property when you have the pieces in place? I would put my money on the sequel being far closer to ALIEN than PROMETHEUS was.

I would not be surprised if this movie gets cancelled all together, but I would be even less surprised if we get a follow up without Ridley Scott as anything more than a producer. Fassbender and Rapace may be locked into appear, but that doesn't mean they have to like it.

UPDATE: Damon Lindelof was contacted by SlashFilm for comment. He provided a long email detailing his feelings on where the sequel stands, including the fact that he doubts Ridley Scott has ever freaked out in his life. Follow the link for the full email, but here is a snippet:

As to whether Ridley and Fox are freaking out about me not working on a sequel, well thats news to me. I retain awesome relationships with both. More importantly, the idea that there arent many, MANY writers out there capable of taking the reins is sort of ridiculous. I did not map out a trilogy and then walk when the going got tough. Anyone who says otherwise doesnt know me and doesnt know the truth.

Lindelof and Scott may not be the ones freaking out, but Fox execs may be as they try to keep a 2014 release date within their sights.

Good.

While I have grown more and more fond of Prometheus I am glad Lindelof will have nothing to do with it. I think the film will be better off for it. He took what was already a good screenplay (one good enough to get Ridley Scott back aboard the franchise) and injected some poorly thought out, quasi-religious mythology. What we got was an Alien prequel that used the promise of revelation to hold the viewer's attention and then paid that off by giving them the finger for wanting to know. Sounds a

I don't know much about writing, but give the second one to Cameron and the last one to Fincher.
I want to see that happen before I die.

No Fincher, The Alien franchise took a nose dive after aliens. Cameron YES! Fincher NO and Ill doubt he would want to be involved in it anyway as he usually doesnt comment on Alien 3

Noomi Rapace lands on another planet, shit gets horrific, we learn a few more things about the Xenomorphs and our place in the universe, Noomi just about survives. Basic template for numerous sequels to Prometheus, surely?

How's about she ends up on the Engineer's homeworld, and is taken in as some sort of novelty by this massively advanced society who mostly weren't aware of the weapons research going on on the first film's planet, then there's a xenomorph-esque outbreak on their world and

Possibilities

I also like Prometheus regardless of the plot holes, I think the sequel has the opportunity to tie up alot of loose ends whilst being able to introduce possibilities for future Alien movies. As there were so many more ships that could have gone to other parts of the universe. And also explaining the crash on LV426. I have had a concept in mind for Alien 5 for a while just need to get it developed into a short or teaser.

I only hope they don't fuck up the next Blade Runner movie. I liked Prometheus, but I think they don't have to make a sequel.

What i want...

Is to see like 3 movies, and have it solidly flow through right into ALIEN. Is that to hard to ask ?

I really want a sequel! Bring on

"Prometheus" is one of those rare films where I am craving and starving for a sequel. I want to see and know more. That was the beauty of Scott's direction of "Prometheus", rather than being a simple prequel like "Star Wars 1-3", "Prometheus" dares to push the boundaries of sci-fi and the world of the "Alien" series in to a complex and rich matrix of mystery. The film screams sequel, which I strongly feel accounts for most of the film's plot holes. Please give us the sequel which I have a

People need to stop breaking this film's balls, it's a classic style of sci-fi and not "Alien Resurrection", or worse "Alien vs. Predator".

Prometheus Was Flawed Awesomeness.

Lindleof is a really good writer and the only reason he gets flack is because studios just can't carry his original ideas onto the big screen without f*cking them up. I love the idea of Prometheus NOT heading into Alien. Some things are best left unexplained. The mystery behind it is what makes it intriguing. And the fact that the Prometheus trilogy runs parallel to Alien makes the universe seem way bigger than if everything somehow magically connected to each other. I'd love to see a sequel.

So what you're saying is maybe Damon Lindelof should write plays or novels, so that studios aren't burdened with translating his ideas.

For the record, I liked Prometheus, but thinking about it after the fact, certain parts simply don't make much sense...at all. For that alone I'd be in favor of a sequel.

Yeah, the Alien films are fine on their own. I always liked the idea of a movie set in the same universe but not a TRUE prequel... I hope the Prometheus sequels tell their own story, instead of continuing to try to "explain" Alien--which is completely unnecessary.

I respectfully disagree with your point of view on this. I think telling a story in the Aliens universe without the xenomorphs is fine, but that is not what this film was sold as or expected to be. Let's be honest, the ALIEN franchise was on its last legs. It was down to pretty low rent Alien/Predator sequels that were thoughtless and cheap. This was supposed to save the franchise by capitalizing on the interest in the origin of the xenomorphs.

While I agree with you that Prometheus

While I agree with you that Prometheus successfully expanded the ALIEN universe I think the film was sold as a deeper look into the what brought about the ALIEN creature. And what you got was a series of cosmic accidents and coincidence that created this creature. (Weaponized Black Goo + Giant Squid pseudo pregnancy) + (Engineer + Giant Squid Battle) = Engineer impregnation and the birth of the first xenomorph-esque creature. Not terribly satisfying. If anything I think it detracts from the ALIEN universe.

Why oh why

must everything be explained?!!! When i saw prometheus halfway through the movie i was thinking, actually i really dont want to know how it all starts and where the aliens come from, it takes all of the charm and mystery away from the other movies.
Prometheus was a very good looking mediocre movie in my opinion and i have zero interest in a sequel to it, i would rather see a good Alien sequell.

This is EXACTLY why I had reservations about Prometheus- the mystery of the Space Jockey was the whole concept of Alien! Fear of the unknown. That's IT.

If Ridley Scott stays away from the story and script and also allows his editor to have more of a say on the final cut, Paradise will be fine. Anyone who has watched the four hours of blu ray features knows what I'm talking about.

In my honest opinion when it comes to the script, I say give Spaihts free reign to write the sequel. All of his scripts are available to read online and if given the chance, I am confident he could come up with a unique "hard sci-fi" story focused on David, Shaw,

Nobody wants two hours of a whole new crew searching for the lost Prometheus, only to be picked off by the Deacon left on LV 223. Give us something slow, dark, and contemplative so that I actually feel like I'm in outer space in the theater as opposed to an Apple store, and so when I leave the movie my friends and I can discuss the implications of David being an immortal, brilliant being now with "free will" and how that will impact the Engineers and other superior life in the universe who still exist by cycle of life and death.

Would be more interesting than blogs and forums spending months arguing about a guy petting a snake.

You should post that exact comment on every forum ever. Big thumbs up. I bet they could make a sequel to Dredd from Prometheus's catering budget alone.

This news sounds quite made up. There's plenty of great writers out there to at least give a treatment on a sequel. Why not ask Alex Garland, he wrote Sunshine, Dredd, and apparently he's done a Halo script. I mean, there isn't a short supply of sci-fi writers out there. But I do agree a sequel would fail. I mean, the original fans were expecting the secrets behind everything we loved about Alien. A sequel is going in uncharted water with new ideas us fans may ultimately hate.

'Prometheus' was not only of the worst, most plot hole ridden (in a year full of plot hole filled) movies of last year, but one of the biggest disappointments ever! No one can call it legitimately, objectively 'good' (enjoying a movie and it be objectively good are two wholly different things). A sequel is a god awful idea and I hope it fizzles out and dies.

Any story that is riddled with plot holes is objectively a bad story. Not everything needs to spelled out, and the story shouldn't treat it's audience like they are morons, but it should hold up when even the most basic amount of logic is applied to it; if it doesn't then it's an objectively bad story.

More importantly, movies have objective and subjective things about them-

The phrase "far too dark" is a subjective term. Others might see it as the perfect amount of dark or far too light.

What?

"...Lindelof was brought in to bring the film more in line with the ALIEN series." I think you meant the exact opposite. Initially, I hated Prometheus. Hated it. Over time, however, it has grown on me and now I like it quite a bit. (unlike LOST which, fuck you Lindelof). I hope they do produce a sequel and I can't imagine that Lindelof not being a part of it would in any way effect the film's green light.

A sequel will bomb. Prometheus was supposed to start a new franchise, instead it killed itself with its incoherent script, laughable characters, and plots holes the size of Texas. Prometheus had great ideas behind it, and this why the film pisses me off. It should have and could have been so much more.

The words "freaking out" make me imagine Scott and Fox excecs running around a boardroom yelling and screaming...so it seems a bit overexaggerated! Still I'd be down with a Prometheus 2 despite not being crazy about the first.
