Ridley Scott talks Blade Runner and Prometheus sequels

08.25.2014

One of the busiest directors working today doesn’t have a superhero or tween vampire movie under his belt; instead, Ridley Scott has a long list of classic movies spanning over five decades which he continues to add to. He also has a long list of movies he talks about making or hopes he can make; swings and roundabouts I suppose. He’s busy on this next effort EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS that will hit theaters on December 12th 2014 and after that THE MARTIAN, starring Matt Damon is set for release on November 25th 2015. Looking beyond that now, he hopes to get to work on the sequels for BLADE RUNNER and PROMETHEUS.

The director recently spoke with EW about those sequels and mentioned the script for the BLADE RUNNER sequel is complete:

"It's written and it's damn good," of course it involves Harrison, who is a survivor after all these years - despite the accident (referring to Ford's "Star Wars" injury). So yes, that will happen."

You have to laugh at the little jab about Ford’s poor leg; I’m sure Ford would (not Disney though). Scott also revealed that he could direct the BLADE RUNNER sequel after THE MARTIAN which of course leaves little time for PROMETHEUS 2 which currently set for release on March 4, 2016.

"That’s the problem, I've got a lot of ducks in a row. But they're all written."

I’m all for this guy keeping busy, but between him, Guillermo Del Toro, and Steven Spielberg, we have about ten dream projects on the go right now. On second thought, do you know what that’s called for people such as I? Job security! Bring on the ducks gentlemen. What this could ultimately do though is force Scott and 20th Century Fox to hand over directing duties of the PROMETHEUS sequel to someone else. Also, it’s not even confirmed yet that Harrison Ford would say yes to a BLADE RUNNER sequel; and if you don't have Ford, you don't have a leg to stand on. Goodnight!

Which sequel of Scott's would you want to see?

No Brainer

Prometheus... NOW PLEASE!

The Martian was a fantastic book, but Matt Damon is NOT the guy to play Mark Watney... not even close. I would have gone with Ryan Reynolds or Chris Pine or someone like that, you know, someone with a sense of humor.

Prometheus 2 already has a release date? That's good news I guess...

Personally, I hope he prioritizes Prometheus 2 for his next film after Exodus. I get that he probably doesn't want to wait too long on making Blade Runner 2. But if he already has a release date set than he might as well get to work on that. He'll need to wait until Harrison Ford is finished on Star Wars anyways before he can start filming Blade Runner 2 anyways. And with Ford's injury, he'll probably be filming into

I'm reading The Martian right now. It makes for an interesting book, but potentially a very boring film. I'll take Prometheus 2 please.

As am I... I wondered the same thing, but with the right director and writer, it can work. I mean Cast Away and 127 Hours certainly had suspenseful times and they run along the same lines.

I'm not saying that Blade Runner needs a sequel, but I think that universe is interesting enough to be revisited.

And actually, I'd be down for Ford to maybe play the basis for the model that Deckard turned out to be. That might work...

Depending on who in the production you ask, the canon is either that Deckard was human, or that the answer is purely ambiguous. So that actually leans somewhat against the Replicant fan theory.

But didn't Ridley confirm on the Final Cut behind-the-scenes that Deckard IS a replicant? I'm paraphrasing but I remember him saying something to the effect of all the clues were there and you'd have to be pretty dim to miss them, or something like that.

Yeah, echoing the previous posts, just let it go. Prometheus, while I liked it, wasn't quite the return to sci-fi I had hoped for from him, though that could have more been the scripts fault.

I agree with anomaly7. I would love to see another movie set in that world with different characters, scenarios and threats, but not a direct sequel following up on a geriatric Deckard.

Lol. I don't think I've ever seen 39 thumbs down on any post. Someone has waaaaay too much time on their hands. Who the hell did you piss off Jedd?!

Blade Runner doesn't need a sequel, and I feel too much time has passed for it to work. I'd be down for a Prometheus sequel to round-out some of the plot points in the first movie.
