Rooney Mara to star as fictional pop-singer in Vox Lux with new music by Sia
I like Rooney Mara. I thought she did a great job as Lisbeth Salander in the otherwise unnecessary GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO remake, and even made a lasting impression in her one, devastating scene (minus quick flashbacks) in HER. After the disappointing failure of PAN though (where she played Tiger Lily), it looks like she's jumping on to more intriguing projects.
She'll be starring in VOX LUX from director Brady Corbet (THE CHILDHOOD OF A LEADER) as Celeste, a pop-star from the late '90s. The music will be provided by Grammy-award winning artist Sia (who did the song for the weird music video with Shia LaBeouf).
Here is the synopsis:
VOX LUX follows the rise of ‘Celeste’ (Rooney Mara) from the ashes of a major national tragedy to pop superstardom. This 15-year odyssey, set between 1999 and the present day, tracks the important cultural evolutions of the 21st Century via her gaze.
This sounds like it could be intriguing. I'm not the biggest fan of pop music, but I don't think we've actually had a serious look at the pop music scene of the late 90's-to-2000's (besides lazy Lifetime biopics like the upcoming Britney Spears one). So here's hoping that the film will give us a closer look at the trials-and-tribulations of that lifestyle was like (even if the character herself is fictional). And you don't need to like the subject matter to enjoy the movie (the fact I don't listen to rap doesn't mean that I'm not excited for the new Tupak biopic), so I'll keep my eyes on this one.
No release date has been set at this time. However, Mara will be seen next year playing Mary Magdalene in the aptly-titled MARY MAGDELINE (where Joaquin Phoenix plays Jesus). So there's that.
|Extra Tidbit:||Sia did the cover of Randy Marsh (as Lorde)'s song "Push (Feel Good on a Wednesday)" on SOUTH PARK for the episode "Gluten Free Ebola".|
