Rumor: DC courting John Wick directors; Red Hood now a "priority character"

04.08.2015

Chad Stahleski David Leitch

Would you like to see JOHN WICK directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch behind the camera for a comic book movie? I sure the hell would, and according to Latino-Review, it just might happen. The site is claiming that the duo are being courted to direct a DC film.

Unfortunately, LR isn't sure which movie Stahelski and Leitch are being considered for. But with Zack Snyder directing THE JUSTICE LEAGUE: PART I and II and Michelle MacLaren helming WONDER WOMAN, that leaves THE FLASH, AQUAMAN, SHAZAM, CYBORG and GREEN LANTERN, as well new solo Batman and Superman films. Earlier this week we learned THE LEGO MOVIE directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller might be up for THE FLASH gig, however just like this most recent report, it is only a rumor at this point.

Latino-Review also has some additional info on DC's cinematic universe. They say they've been told Jason Todd/Red Hood is now a "priority character" for DC. As Robin, Jason Todd was famously killed by The Joker in the "A Death in the Family" comic book story arc, and the site says Todd's Robin uniform will be featured in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE in a display case in the Batcave.

Warning: Possible SUICIDE SQUAD spoiler ahead!

Red Hood

LR goes on to say in SUICIDE SQUAD, Harley Quinn feels guilty about the death of Jason Todd, which has driven a wedge between Quinn and The Joker. What are your thoughts on the latest DC movie universe rumors?

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016, and SUICIDE SQUAD will be in theaters on August 5, 2016.

Meh, it would be better if they contacted the Raid 2 director. But maybe he would be better of with Batman. The fighting in John Wick just seemed lackluster and unexciting.

And I hope IF they go with Red Hood (which I still doubt, I don't believe one thing that comes out of Latino Review)... he won't have the backstory of being a little kid fighting crime.

Why all of a sudden is he a priority ? Is it because of Deadpool ?

Cool. They'd be great for a bats film. I do wish we could see a "bats family/gotham" film universe that would go thru 4 robins and the Morrison run over like 10 movies but Ill take what I can get

For anyone complaining that average moviegoers won't understand the backstory, think of it this way: basically everyone knows who Robin is. No one knew who Bucky Barnes was, and he really had very few scenes in the first captain america film. Now, everyone knows who the Winter Soldier is, and, in a way, that story arc is exactly the same. One of the hero's closest friends is killed and it trouble him for years, then much later he returns as a formidable nemesis, only to eventually return to the

Literally the same story with a few minor details. If you build up the Jason Todd death in Suicide Squad and the Justice League movies with flashbacks and dialogue and such, and show how much it messed up Batman (which will probably explain why he was "semi-retired"), audiences will understand the story enough for him to come back as Red Hood in a solo Batman movie. I actually think it's a good idea.

Oversaturation?

I forgot how many movies DC has on their schedule. I do enjoy some comic book movies so I'm not necessarily against this, but considering Marvel's extended slate too, I'm honestly starting to wonder when the market will turn against these type of movies. It's got to happen eventually, right?

I agree. The market is already quickly approaching it's peak. I feel at this point, at least on the Marvel front, fans are already invested for the big pay off that is Infinity Wars 1&2. So I think after those movies debut, we'll start to see the decline in attendance at these movies. I mean honestly, after that where does Marvel go?

As for DC, they're showing up too late to the party. By the time they start to roll out the bulk of their movies I think audiences will have been fatigued

As for DC, they're showing up too late to the party. By the time they start to roll out the bulk of their movies I think audiences will have been fatigued by superhero movies. And given some of the other action/summer blockbuster movies that garner attention on these sites, I'm guessing that audiences attention will turn back to your regular action movies/franchises (i.e. Mad Max, Fast and Furious, etc).

I like what they're doing, but I wish they would do the Jason Todd / Joker story on screen

It's a little strange to walk into a movie where there is so much back story that will really only be understood by the comic book fans. I hope we at least get flashback sequences to fill in some of the gaps. If they are really going to do the "Under the Red Hood" story from the animated universe, why not just do the whole thing. Its a great story.

In the animated Under The Red Hood, the film starts with a prologue that retells Death in the Family. That worked fine for me, as someone who never heard of Jason Todd

It's great to read that DC is really going after some exciting, unique directors for some of their solo DC films.

I loved John Wick and would love to see them make the transistion and take their style into a comic book film. And considering they're style, they would be perfect for a Red Hood film. I mean, I really can't see them directing any of the other DC solo films except maybe Batman; but I'm hoping Affleck gets the chance to direct himself in his first solo outing as Batman.

I hope this is true because "Red Hood" or "Red Hood and the Outlaws" would make for a fantastic movie. But based on the "run down" of how he fits into the DCCU, I feel like DC might be trying too much too soon. This cinematic universe seems like it will be too developed to the point of alienating fans. The average movie goer is not that familiar with Red Hood and especially his history as Robin. So jumping right into this world where Joker and Harley Quinn have already split, Batman has presumably been through a few different Robins, and now one of those Robins is back from the dead and looking for revenge, that sounds like an overly complex universe for an average movie-goer to jump into.

Please God Yes!

If they are planning on a solo Batman film there is no cooler story they could pick.Iit works beutifully to because the older Batman rout alows them to establish Jason Todds death without needing a whole film for it. In addition they could have Robin show up as Nightwing or even Oracle. I hope it follows the comic because it's one of my favorite Batman stories (plus it's got Black Mask). Lastly these two would nail a Batman film particularly one in which he's fighting an oponent thats as

Honestly the older Batman angle works so well because it alows them to explore so many stories and plot elements that take place down the line in the Batman mythos.

Personally, I'm okay with it as I know the back story...but the average movie goer I'm guessing won't. It's not like the origin story that's been done a thousand times before...so people know it...and would be okay with just moving on with him already being Batman. They're jumping way ahead; will the average movie goer be expected to understand and appreciate the situation Batman finds himself in? How will they be able to foster any emotional connection to his plight without understanding

Show the suit in Batman Superman, reference it before hand and then open the Red Hood movie with a flashback showing it actually happening. The animated movie did this very well.

I don't get all the hype around John Wick...

... It was an ok movie but i was not amazed by anything in that movie... nor in directing nor in action sequences/story
maybe people were well surprised to see Keanu Reeves in a good revenge movie (a la Taken...), but still, saw it in theaters, and now, cannot remember any highlight scene...
waiting for downvotes...

John Wick was great. Be nice if all these rumors came together and they did a Red Hood movie. I think he would translate to the big screen well.

I'd like to travel a few years in to the future for an hour or so...just to see if WB's DCCU is a success. So much going on...it all sounds very promising...but I fear the shambles that was Green Lantern and the disappointment that I got from MoS.

A lot of rumors from LR. Looking forward to see which rumors turn out false and which one is true. Red Hood certainly is interesting, and this isn't the first time the "robin suit in batcave" rumor has been popping up

Oh Yeah! I was very surprised with John Wick because it's so enjoyably good. They will be good fit for a comic book movie.
