Sigourney Weaver says that the Avatar sequel scripts are "amazing" in scope

12.01.2016

Sigourney Weaver Avatar James Cameron

Although I doubt that many people would place James Cameron's AVATAR on the top of a list of the greatest movies ever made, it's hard to deny that the man knows how to create a world and fill it with spectacle. Making close to $3 billion worldwide is all the reason Cameron and 20th Century Fox needed in order to develop a sequel to AVATAR, but I think most of us are wondering why we even need a sequel, let alone four. However, James Cameron gets what James Cameron wants and what James Cameron wants is to spend the next handful of years exploring the world of Pandora. Sigourney Weaver, who appeared in the first AVATAR film as Dr. Grace Augustine, will be returning for the sequels and recently told Variety that they are "amazing" in scope compared to the first film.

In my opinion, the three scripts I’ve read so far are many times more amazing than the first one in terms of their scope. He did a lot of the heavy lifting in the first movie, establishing the family and the relationships and the world, and now he really gets to play.

Despite counting myself among those questioning why AVATAR needs four sequels, a part of me is incredibly curious to see what James Cameron has planned for Jake (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). We don't know much about where the sequels will take us, but Cameron once teased that the AVATAR story would be a family saga which would follow Jake, Neytiri and their children in their struggles with the humans. At the moment AVATAR 2 is set for a December 2018 release with the remaining sequels following in 2020, 2022 and 2023.

Sure, it'll be big in "scope". Throw enough crap on the screen and people might forget there's supposed to be an interesting plot, character depth and plausible storytelling.
Scope is fine. That's all anyone needs these days anyway. Not substance. Nope. Just... "scope".

Saying 'Cameron is good with sequels'

...doesn't work in this case, really, as his sequels were sequels to GOOD movies.

For all its story hiccups, Avatar was definitely a beautiful experience to behold in IMAX3D. Anyone who knows Cameron understands that he takes his sweet ass time developing projects. Hell, remember how long Avatar was in development? I recall hearing about that film all the back to 2005. He is a perfectionist who always wants to revolutionize a technique in his films. Since, as he said, the film is going to be heavily set in the underwater portion of Pandora, he probably is perfecting

I also remember him saying that he was working on a new way for people to watch it in 3D without the classes.

I've always loved it.

I might be alone in this regard, but I always loved Avatar. I know the story is not original, but this was a movie that made me feel like a kid when I watched it because the visuals are so powerful. I've watched it a couple of times since it first came out, and my feelings haven't changed. I've always been able to overlook a film's flaws if it is a great escape from reality, which Avatar is. That being said, I'm not sure it needs sequels; it's one of the few films that left me feeling like I

But Cameron's movies haven't really disappointed me in the past, so I'm looking forward to seeing what he's doing with these sequels.

Yawn,,,

Avatar was terrible, we do not need a sequel to 'Dancing with Smurfs'.
At least this time, let the humans win, which was what I was rooting for in the theater.

I walked in expecting Aliens 2 kind of vibe and story, humans blasting aliens, and instead we received a beating over the head climate change message wrapped in a crappy but pretty movie.

I watched Avatar on cable recently, and was blown away. I enjoyed it in theaters years ago, and I haven't seen it since. I just thought of it as a 3D big screen only kind of film. But even without all that the story was just engaging as hell all on its own. The film was fun, emotional, and the action was amazing. It's easy to forget how fantastic this film is with all the backlash over the years, but seeing it again was refreshing.

So it exceeds scope of the first...

How about whether or not we're getting decent dialogue this time?

What is this site's deal with Avatar? I know the story was rehashed, but the film was fucking amazing. Is no one else excited for this? 3 more original stories from the man who directed T2, The Abyss, and mother fucking Titanic.. cmon people..give it a fucking chance.

T2 - the last good movie he made.

Avatar, was more of a tech demo. The story was awful, the dialogue terrible, and the the acting meh. I would have walked put but I was with my cousins. I didn;t ;like then, and still don't. It has pretty visuals that help mask everything else.

Using "mother fucking Titanic" as an example of a good movie is not really the best way to make a point.

I am a homosexual, and I'd love to fuck Leo in the ass. Does your comment "So your telling me it scared you when you saw Leo and had your 1st homosexual impluse..." a means to try and belittle someone? Why does homosexuality make you feel like it's a bad thing? Are you yourself hiding things inside that you don't want to admit? We're nice people, most of us. Go ahead and open your heart to what you really want. It might make you a nicer, more relaxed, and loving person.

@Nacho: No, sorry. No actor in the movie they are in will say it's bad unless it's after the release. I don't care who they are or how much credibility they have. This just isn't news, it's dumb.

I think it'll be good (Cameron has always hit the target with sequels) but, that said, you're not wrong.
