Snyder’s Punch

Wow, director Zack Snyder isn’t dawdling around to see how 300 does, or even waiting until WATCHMEN gets rolling (or doesn’t, he said fearfully), before announcing another new project — an original “action-fantasy” called SUCKER PUNCH. He’s even got a brand new company for the flick, called Cruel and Unusual Films (considering Hollywood, it’s hard to believe that name wasn’t already taken).

Ensuring he doesn’t just become the remake/comic guy (he’s also linked to COBALT 60, based on Vaughn Bode’s comic character), this one’s sounds about as far out there as you can get — and something I wanna see RIGHT NOW. It’s set in the 1950s and “follows a girl who is confined to a mental institution by her evil stepfather, who intends to have her lobotomized in five days. While there, she imagines an alternative reality to hide her from the pain, and in that world, she begins planning her escape, needing to steal five objects to help get her out before she is deflowered by a vile man”. Snyder describes it as “Alice in Wonderland with machineguns,” along with dragons, B-52 bombers and brothels. Some of my favorite things! Zany!

Although he seems to have effectively covered this in 300, Snyder says his goal is to craft action scenes that aren’t limited by the boundaries of reality (he also takes a swipe at ULTRAVIOLET, which in point of fact is indeed worthy of any and all derision), and the movie will incorporate music as an underlying theme. And not just theme music. Um.
