Sony and Marvel officially announce Tom Holland as the new Spider-man

06.23.2015

After months of back and forth, Marvel.com has formally announced the star and director for the new SPIDER-MAN: THE IMPOSSIBLE's Tom Holland is your new Peter Parker while COP CAR director Jon Watts will direct the new film. Holland won the part after extensive and thorough screen tests that included other rumored actors like Asa Butterfield. Holland's selection comes as CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR continues production. That film is expected to be the cinematic debut of Holland as the new Spider-man before launching into his own franchise after that.

Former Sony executive Amy Pascal issued this statement about the casting of Holland as Spider-man.

“Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

The selection of Jon Watts is surprisingly not surprising. Watts excited audiences at Sundance this year with the Kevin Bacon thriller COP CAR. Much like Marc Webb, Watts comes from an independent film background which should carry with it a focus on character development. Whether he can handle massive CGI spectacle remains to be seen.  Our very own Chris Bumbray did give COP CAR a very good review, so that should bode well.

It is unknown who is scripting the new SPIDER-MAN movie, but I would anticipate we should be hearing a lot more about this project now that the principal pieces are in place. Now you can sound off below as to whether you think Marvel and Sony have made the right choice.

SPIDER-MAN is set to hit theaters on July 28, 2017. You can read the full press release below.

Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios are proud to announce that after a full worldwide casting search, Tom Holland will play Peter Parker/Spider-Man in the next Spider-Man film, in theaters in IMAX and 3D on July 28, 2017.  The film will be directed by Jon Watts, director of "Cop Car," the upcoming thriller that made its debut earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival.

Marvel and Sony Pictures, and producers Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal conducted an extensive search for both the actor and the director.  The studios and producers were impressed by Holland’s performances in "The Impossible," “Wolf Hall,” and the upcoming "In the Heart of the Sea," and by a series of complex screen tests.  Following Marvel’s tradition of working with the brightest next wave of directors, Watts also went through multiple meetings with Feige, Pascal, and the studio, before winning the job.

Commenting on the announcement, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures Motion Pictures Group Chairman, said, “It’s a big day here at Sony. Kevin, Amy and their teams have done an incredible job.  The Marvel process is very thorough, and that’s why their results are so outstanding.  I’m confident Spider-Man will be no exception.  I’ve worked with a number of up-and-coming directors who have gone on to be superstars and believe that Jon is just such an outstanding talent.  For Spidey himself, we saw many terrific young actors, but Tom’s screen tests were special.   All in all, we are off to a roaring start.”

Feige commented, “As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life.  We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring.”

Pascal added, “Sony, Marvel, Kevin and I all knew that for Peter Parker, we had to find a vibrant, talented young actor capable of embodying one of the most well-known characters in the world.  With Tom, we’ve found the perfect actor to bring Spider-Man’s story into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”

Sony Pictures will finance and release worldwide the next installment of the $4 billion Spider-Man franchise on July 28, 2017, in a film co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the Web-Slinger.

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

I'm glad he was chosen

He was on the top of my list, he has the acting chops and he just looks like a young Peter Parker. While the first movie or two will be kind of shitty, I bet each one will be better than the last. Just because this is the kid we are going to see really grow up and carry on the Avengers franchise.

I have never seen him in anything before, never seen The Impossible, but I am glad the wait is over. None of the candidates were truly inspiring anyway, I mean imagine the audience reaction to Maguire taking off the mask in Civil War, now that would of been epic. However, I get what they are trying to do, making sure he is able to be around for the next 15-20 years.

So he can do a flip..?

Is this the basis for casting the next spider-man? I mean excuse me.. Spider-Jit? If a kid can do a flip or summersault, he got the job? Wow, talk about being stuck on Groundhogs day with Peter. The character is never going to grow out of high school on the big screen. Seriously Sony, just stop already, if you can't either get Tobey or Andrew back, then there's no real point in casting a new Spider-Jit yet again. This officially beats the dumbest casting in the world next to Supergirl for

I Miss Tobey Mcguire SEVERELY now

I can not believe my eyes.......this is SO wrong.....I never thought it possible to get worse than Andrew Garfield who looks NOTHING like Peter Parker......they should just save alot of time and bring back Tobey McGuire.....there does come a time where studios MUST ignore the fanboys.......Peter Parker should not be high school age form this film....especially since time has past since all the events of Iron Man 1,2 and 3 and Avengers 1 and 2.....he should be end of college age or already out

Why is it they NEVER pock someone who actually looks like Peter Parker in the comics???? Why why why??i
They only got it right once! The guy who played Peter Parker in the 1970's early 80's Live action Spider Man....that dude embodies Peter Parker perfectly in looks.
People always say: "In Marvel I trust" well not anymore
Very very very poor choice.....I thought they would finally prove how to do Spider-Man right......well they didnt.....and I dont need to reserve Judgement to see the film first....because although I might like the performance and even the movie...he isnstill wrong for this role......Heath Ledger was wrong for the Joker too.....his performance was superb....but he is not the Joker of the comics.
People dont understand the freakin difference.
This is pretty darn close to being as bad as Ben BeefLeck freakin Aflak Affleck as Bruce Wayne....
Sheesh...pathetic!
Recast this quickly please......bring Tobey Mcguire back if you cant come up with a better solution.

This franchise has become solely focused on marketing and profits. If they, (the studios) had enough patience to wait a few years and let the bad taste of The Amazing Spiderman fade away, then I would have more faith in this new take. I just can't see any reason to endorse this reboot when it's essentially following a similar process to the development of TAS, even if they're using a younger actor.

I want to address

the age of this actor. For everyone who keeps saying "He looks too young to be in high school!", have you ever actually seen a high school kid outside of movie high school kids? They look younger than you think, or younger than you remember. 16 years old is very young. If he's a freshman in High school he's in 9th grade. I was still in my middle school in 9th grade when I was growing up. I co directed a high school musical recently and many of the kids look even younger than this gentlemen.

I might take a break from Spider-man with this new series. But I'll probably catch the next reboot with a new actor in about 5 years, which seems to be the average turn around these days for spidey.

Wow. From this child actor that looks way too fucking young, to the mediocre & boring director, this is going to be another ASM but starring kids aimed at only the tween & teen crowd.

Well, of the people they were looking at after Butterfield was cut (not that I particularly saw him as Parker), they went with the one I liked the most. Not that there was a whole lot to go on with any of these kids. They're all very young. But Holland's about 19, which makes me feel old, but moreover, makes him just about right for playing Peter Parker.

I'm a little more worried for Jon Watts, at least in the Spidey sequences. Cop Car has action and kids, so in that he ought to have a grip

I was personally rooting for Jonathan Levine, but either way, I trust Marvel won't let Spider-Man turn into one of their b-sides. Getting the right co-stars goes a long way in this (say, what about Kevin Bacon for Norman Osborn?).

Who are these people? This kid looks 12, more junior high, than high school. Why can't they ever get Spider-Man right, is it really that hard?

Out of the three remaining candidates, he was the selection I was most rooting for. And I like who they chose as director as well.

Just excited to see confirmation on who will finally be directing and starring in this. And to have Spider Man's universe (and especially his villains) have an impact on the already established MCU. I just hope they do a much better job casting this time around because everyone involved in the reboot (except for Stone as Gwen Stacy) weren't as good as I thought

I just hope they do a much better job casting this time around because everyone involved in the reboot (except for Stone as Gwen Stacy) weren't as good as I thought they would be. For instance, I could see William H Macy making for a great Uncle Ben and perhaps his real life wife as Aunt May.

Anyway, much more excited for this than I ever was for the Webb/Garfield reboot. I just hope this new film/franchise can capture the tone and spirit of Raimi's original trilogy.

That's a great casting choice for Uncle Ben and Aunt May. I like it!

Also, here's hoping that the new movies actually do Peter's attachment to his Uncle Ben justice this time around. That always bugged me about the Raimi movies and Webb movies - Uncle Ben's death was just a catalyst for Peter to start fighting crime. It rarely ever came up in the movies after that. In the comics, Peter always references the lessons taught to him by Uncle Ben.

If they introduce him in Civil War there won't be. He'll be thrown in the film as an established hero, so they couldn't go back and tell a prequel in his first movie.

For his first film, they should just do what the Incredible Hulk did or what Raimi's sequels did by telling the story and dropping details in the opening credits.

I thought Kevin Feige already confirmed there would be no more origin stories for the Marvel films? I hope that rings true, we don't need a 3rd origin story, plus Spidey will probably be revealed in Civil War anyway.

The actor from THE IMPOSSIBLE? So...

AUNT MAY: "Listen, what if that old man was your uncle Ben? What if he needed help? You'd want someone to help him, wouldn't you?"
PETER: "Uncle Ben is dead!"

Now let's hope Sony doesn't ruin what is probably the best chance Marvel has with their character.

Wasn't he Sony's top choice, not Marvel's? I was afraid of this Spider-man deal since the press announcement. Sony still holds all the power including final cut. Marvel is just working for Sony so they can use the character from time to time and Disney can get more merchandising profits.

Remember when Batman, Superman, and Spiderman (three of the most american superheros) were all played by Brits. Well now we still have 2 of the 3 played by British actors.

Kidding aside, this is pretty good casting. Like most people, i have my own personal favorite i was hoping for, but the way i see it, it couldve been much much worse (Jaden Smith). He did an absolutely fantastic job in "The Impossible" and proves he can do physical acting with Billy Elliot. Please dont hate on this right

I actually find the choice of whose directing more interesting. Who's Jon Watts?
