Sony plans to bring female superhero from the Spider-Man universe to cinemas

11 months agoby:

The under-performance of THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 has forced Sony into rethinking its strategy, and that's a good thing! No one sets out to make a bad movie and the latest installment was a bit of a mess so it looks like they're going to be a little more careful moving forward. Sony has already announced that Drew Goddard's Sinister Six will now be occupying the Spidey 3 slot on November 11, 2016, but it looks like they're aiming to bring a little more estrogen into the equation as a female superhero is being groomed for a theatrical release before AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 hits theaters.

Lisa Joy-Nolan has been hired to pen the script, who's more recently been attached to the upcoming WestWorld TV show for HBO. Right now, Sony is aiming to have the film hit in 2017 to bridge the gap between SINISTER SIX and SPIDER-MAN 3. What character they plan to bring to the silver screen is under wraps. Somehow I don't see Spider-Woman coming to the screen so soon, so perhaps Black Cat or Silver Sable may make an appearance? In any case, Sony is adamant in stretching out the Spidey-verse, so I only hope they don't rush things in an effort to join the Marvel/DC party.

With Wonder Woman right around the corner, and whatever Marvel has up it's sleeve, it looks like we're going to see an influx in female superheroes. Black Widow and Gamora have been seen recently kicking ass, and if these new characters are as well-drawn as those two, I'm completely game for some women taking the bulk of the screentime. Word on the street is that GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY has pulled in the largest percentage of females yet for a superhero flick, so I think women are more than ready.

Whatever woman's superhero flick Sony has planned will hit sometime in 2017.

*yawn*

Just as long as they follow in the great steps of such other fantastic female superhero films such as Elektra, Catwoman, and Supergirl. Orrrrrrrrrrr perhaps a great story should be the focus instead of what sex the main character is?

good god we already know female characters in comic books are the worst there like a nagging wife who always wants to be involved but has nothing cool to offer, just stop it before you really lose lots of money.

Question:
Does Sony own the rights to do Spider-Woman? Or is that still Marvel?

No sony doesn't own spider-woman, she has nothing to do with Spider-Man other then the word spider. Marvel owns her rights.

There's more than one Spiderwoman. Marvel and Sony could each do Spiderwoman movies.

I think this is a great idea, I'd love to see more female superhero characters get their own movies.

A superheroine film is probably the one thing Sony could beat Marvel to the punch with.

BRILLIANT!

This is a great idea. There should definitely be more female superheroes in this golden age of comic book movies anyway and it's fantastic that Sony has decided to pursue this. Bring it on!

BRING ON THE CHICKS!

Hollywood needs to get off the horse and kick the reboot habit. The backlash will only get worse. People want original stories about familiar characters or original stories about intense characters. How many times is Peter Parker going to get reintroduced? Fantastic Four reboot will suck and the box office revolt will continue as long as Hollywood keeps going to an already dry well. Spidey 2 wasn't bad, it was just felt we'd been down this path yet again. One would think that Hollywood

How many times is Peter Parker going to get reintroduced? Fantastic Four reboot will suck and the box office revolt will continue as long as Hollywood keeps going to an already dry well. Spidey 2 wasn't bad, it was just felt we'd been down this path yet again. One would think that Hollywood would learn that it was based on originality and yes some reboots have been better but at this juncture of 1 month in the theater and 3 months later on-demand and 6 month to TV, they would want to or be able to not have to submit to a couple of reboot dollars for the share holders.

Now, when we read about a slew of female characters leading the super hero charge, now we're talking. It's about time, and yes, I'm a dude, let's see the ladies kick some more ass. Take down the sausage fest a peg or two and see something different than a testosterone based macho slug fest. Let's see some hotties in spandex humiliating and kicking the crap out of the bad guys for a while. I mean really, in Iron Man 2 when Black Widow shredded those guards, wasn't that cool! Bring on the ladies.

Is Spiderman the only Marvel-owned property that Sony has? It seems that they are really scratching the bottom of the barrel trying to make a few franchises out of one comic-book character.

I personally had a blast watching the last one, but hey, if they want to make it better that's good too. I'd say Black Cat since they had her in the last movie as a bit part.

Spider-woman is not a Spider-man character. Sony doesn't have the rights to her, marvel does.
It's most likely black Cat.

Aunt May origin story/prequel? Sounds about as good as most the other ideas Sony is tossing around.

I think women would agree that the percentage increase of females had more to do with Chris Pratt shirtless and hilarious than Gamora :-P

Are really trying to get a lot out of this one little property. Just give the rights back to Marvel already, you're embarrassing yourself Sony.

It's so blatant that they are trying to create their own expanded universe I.e. Marvel and DC. The problem is how are they going to stretch over one character from the Marvel universe.

Pretty good idea Im exited already about Wonder-woman. And always making remake it real boring. And they are little effeminate too in there spandex uniform. Like I call him Speedo-man. I think Black-cat will be sexy or Spider-women too can be great. And I prefer see girls in speedo-spandex than all those marvel heroes like Capitain america, hawkeyes, daredevil and the fantastic. But if it well done Wonder-Woman and her amazone will be hard to beat for marvel.
