SyFy is developing a series based on 12 Monkeys

07.22.2013

Dear SyFy: Don't you f*cking dare! Sincerely, Everyone.

Terry Gilliam's 12 MONKEYS is one of my favorite movies so having a series produced from the same people who greenlit SHARKNADO does not fill me with confidence. There is no reason to touch it or remake it, especially as a TV movie. I am getting the vibe this could be like Stanley Kubrick versus Mick Garris' versions of THE SHINING.

The movie starred Bruce Willis as James Cole, a convicted criminal in a post-apocalyptic future where the Earth's population is forced to live underground after a deadly virus. In a bid to earn a pardon, Cole will use an imperfect science of time travel to help collect information on the virus released by the Army of the Twelve Monkeys.

The Hollywood Reporter says SyFy is working on a "backdoor pilot" in the form of a TV movie that could launch a BATTLESTAR GALACTICA type reboot of the story. The screenplay is being written by NIKITA and TERRA NOVA scribes Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. 24 director Jon Cassar will helm the project. SyFy is aiming to have the show/pilot ready for their 2014 Fall season.

It would be hard to replicate Brad Pitt's great turn as the psychotic Jeffrey Goines. I am wholly against this project simply based on SyFy's track record. If this was being developed at AMC, HBO, or even FX, I would be a little more relaxed. Hopefully this can be BATTLESTAR GALACTICA quality, but with TERRA NOVA and NIKITA writers behind the scenes, I doubt it.

Extra Tidbit: 12 MONKEYS was itself a remake of the short film LA JETEE, so I guess remaking a remake isn't out of bounds.

Thats just effing wrong....

A reboot is 1 thing, but are they so out of ideas for shows that they're now going to start mining movies? Here's an original idea: how about a science fiction channel that actually produces REAL science fiction instead of crap like Sharknado, etc. They were successful in rebooting the Battlestar Galactica series. How about something along those lines or maybe something original that's actually good. Personally, even though there is a graphic novel out, I'd like to see a Pacific Rim prequel

Personally, even though there is a graphic novel out, I'd like to see a Pacific Rim prequel about the early years of the Kaiju wars & the creation of the Jaegers. That would make a pretty damn cool show that could run at least 4 or 5 seasons before catching up to the movie universe.

Now Hear Me Out...

This could be cool if it's on par with BSG in terms of cast and quality, but they should just leave the characters from the movie completely out of it. The doomed post nuclear winter world overrun with zoo animals, and people time traveling with lots of glitches and mishaps could be cool, especially if production design is as whacky and sweeded steampunk style as the original

Rename it to '12 Donkeys' and I might consider watching it.

"From the writer of Terra Nova".... did they forget that Terra Nova was quite possibly the worst written sci-fi show of the past 10 years? Possibly surpassed only by the horrendous Zero Hour.

I don't like this. I don't like this one bit. Then again, I said the same thing for a Hannibal show and that's now one of my favorite shows currently on tv.
