Tarsem Singh wants to do a Samurai Jack movie

11.14.2011

"I start with a good visual, and see if the story will fall in."

That's a direct quote from Tarsem Singh, director of IMMORTALS, and an explanation for why that movie was the way it was. If you've seen some of his other films like THE CELL and THE FALL, it stands pretty true as well, and though the man has his distinct visuals down, his stories could use a bit of polish.

But after IMMORTALS, what's he up to next? Speaking to THR he expressed a lot of interest in doing a Samurai Jack movie based on the animated series that follows a samurai banished to a dystopian future that earned a few emmys during its three season run.

“I love Samurai Jack. I would love to direct that. It’s brilliant. The speed, it embraces where it comes from. I find that comic strip films are halfway grounded. They don’t play my chord. But I love Samurai Jack. I love the animation.”

But he then goes on to say that he wants to do a DINNER WITH ANDRE type picture next, something with "talking heads" to make people understand that he doesn't have to just be that "visuals" guy. We'll see what he ends up doing first.

Extra Tidbit: Would a Samurai Jack movie work best as an animated or live-action feature?

I'd rather see Genndy (the creator of the series) direct a Samurai Jack movie. Maybe after he's done with Hotel Transylvania.

On the Last season on dvd in Tartakovsky's commentary he talks about wanting to finish this story off in a animated movie. This needs to be done only in animated form and nothing else, I love the Style, by making this a live action film it will never live up to the animated style that has made it a masterpiece.

Oh, Samurai Jack is my ultimate favorite Cartoon Network series!

I've been waiting for years for a movie to happen, but nothing...
I think Tarsem would be a good choice for director (if it's live action) but Tartakovsky should definitely write the script.

Just make sure it's produced and animated by Genndy Tartakovsky and Co.

Love to see Jack in action.

I like the idea Mr.Singh directing it, but my first and last choice is Genndy Tartakovsky, he made it, what it is today an EPIC.

Love Samurai Jack...

and I love Tarsem's visuals, so it sounds like a win. Just like Michael Bay embraced his style he should do the same, just get some help with the stories.

Don't waste your time doing non-visual-overkill films when you're so good at it, man. Do a Doctor Strange film. Just get somebody else to write the script.

I think animated or live-action would be great. Would love to see a Samurai Jack movie directed by him.
