The 47 Ronin retreat to a 2013 release date

Last we heard about 47 RONIN was the incredibly cool decision to have Atticus Ross score the film.  Today's news is signifcantly less cool, as it deals with pushing the release date back from "sometime in November" to February 8th, 2013.  I suppose it's nice to actually have a solid date to look forward to, but I more just want to see this movie right now.  I'm just so damn intrigued by the collection of talent before and behind the camera as well as the story set to be told that I really just want to see it as soon as physically possible.

The unanswered question at this time is whether the release date shift has to do with trouble completing the film, or the studio needing an early Sping action release, or simply a lack of available marketing money.  Or something else entirely.

Starring Keanu Reeves, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, Rinko Kukuchi, and Kou Shibasaki, 47 RONIN is scripted by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini and directed by Carl Erik Rinsch.

Plot recap: An epic period film based on the true tale of a band of samurai swordsmen who avenged the death of their master in 18th century Japan. Reeves will play one of the swordsmen; the group and their master are revered in Japan for their revenge attack on Dec. 14, 1702. The film will tell a stylized version of the story, mixing fantasy elements of the sort seen in "The Lord of the Rings" films, with gritty battle scenes akin to those in films such as "Gladiator."

Extra Tidbit: My favorite Samurai film/series is the Samurai Trilogy starring Toshiro Mifune - MUSASHI MIYAMOTO, DUEL AT ICHIJOJI TEMPLE, and DUEL AT GANRYU ISLAND. What about you?

For a moment my understanding of the calendar failed me and I thought this had been delayed by exactly 47 days.

The cast looks great, but if we're going to have to wait for this a long time, hopefully it will be good.

This is good and bad.

Good: Twilight ( yes I know), Bond, Gravity wouldve destroyed this movie ( also Gravity has a chance to make more money now)

Bad: comes out in February ( lack of confidence for a 200 million film), against A bitter Pill, which seems to look good so far cast wise, and A Good Day to Die Hard, I, Frankenstein, Elysuim and the OZ movie in the weeks following....possibly killing longevity...

Even if the film is good...

...financially this is gonna be one of the biggest bombs of all time. The studio is freaking out over it - hence the lack of promotion and constant schedule shifting. Apparently the newbie director was given complete control and ran the budget over $200 million, and considering Keanu Reeves is the only recognizable name in the cast (and he hasn't fronted a hit movie since the Matrix trilogy), John Carter may soon have company.

This is bad with John Carter and Tron LegacY ( no offense but it shouldve been more of a success) if this bombs...rookie directors wont get shot at blockbusters for a while

Truth be told, November 2012 was going to be pretty crowded, with it competing with Skyfall and what not, so maybe it was for the better.
