Think Tom Cruise's Jack Reacher was a flop? Think again.

Feb. 22, 2013by: Paul Shirey

Tom Cruise's JACK REACHER, the Christopher McQuarrie directed pic based on the novel "One Shot" by Lee Child, was meant to kick off a new franchise for the actor, who stands as the highest paid of his caliber.  The movie didn't set U.S. audiences on fire, earning just $79 million to date, which isn't terrible, but not the mark of greatness that some of his other works have garnered, like, say, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: GHOST PROTOCOL, which brought in $209 million domestically.  So, does that mean that JACK REACHER is a flop?

Not by a long shot.

The film was budgeted at $60 million, so that's already been cleared domestically and it just crossed the $200 million mark worldwide, making it Cruise's 19th film to achieve that status.  With that kind of box office, you can bet that Paramount will be pushing for a sequel (and according to Deadline's Nikki Finke they're doing just that).  If you look at most franchise's, the box office gets bigger with sequels, since it usually takes a while to let it sink in via home video, etc. before the audience takes hold.

The prospects are looking good for Cruise to add number 20 to the list with the Joseph Kosinski directed OBLIVION, out April 19, 2013.  Beyond that, Cruise has another MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE in the works (with JACK REACHER director McQuarrie), a VAN HELSING reboot at Universal, and his follow-up to OBLIVION, the Doug Liman directed ALL YOU NEED IS KILL.

For my money, Cruise is the most consistent actor working today, followed closely by Leonardo DiCaprio.  It's rare that you can count on someone to deliver a solid film each and every time, even if not their best.  Cruise's worst is something many actors dream of achieving.

Here's the full list of Cruise's $200 million club:

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - GHOST PROTOCOL ($694 mil)

WAR OF THE WORLDS ($591 mil)

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE II ($546 mil)

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ($457 mil)

THE LAST SAMURAI ($456 mil)

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE III ($397 mil)

MINORITY REPORT ($358 mil)

RAIN MAN ($354 mil)

TOP GUN ($353 mil)

AUSTION POWERS IN GOLDMEMBER ($296 mil)

JERRY MAGUIRE ($273 mil)

THE FIRM ($270 mil)

KNIGHT & DAY ($261 mil)

A FEW GOOD MEN ($243 mil)

INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE ($223 mil)

COLLATERAL ($217 mil)

JACK REACHER ($203 mil)

VANILLA SKY ($203 mil)

VALKYRIE ($200 mil)

As crazy as Cruise can get when it comes to Scientology and his personal life, he is still a professional when the cameras are rolling. I still admire the balls that he had to do the Dubai stunt in M:I4 without a green screen or CGI. Oh, and Jack Reacher was a great movie, too.

Blockbuster films that don't suck

Can't think of another actor that makes big mainstream movies that are consistently decent. Even his films that I don't think are amazing are still very entertaining (e.g. War Of The Worlds). I'm very fussy, but the last Cruise film I didn't like was probably Mission Impossible 2. That was terrible!

To those saying Goldmember should not count because he wasn't the main star. Doees that mean Samuel L. Jackson should not be credited as the highest grossing actor EVER since he rarely has been the main star? Get real people seriously!

Really?

You're counting Austin Powers 3 as a Tom Cruise movie? That's such a cop out.
That being said, Tom Cruise is the man. I'm pretty sure I'd watch any movie the guy is in.

Cruise is the best actor working today and is a BIG reason why movies (at least his movies) are still fun and great and worth the trip and admission to go see them in theaters. I loved Jack Reacher and thought that Cruise nailed the role (other than him being not tall enough), but that doesn't bother me.

I would love to see him play another villain because he was brilliant as Vincent in Collateral. So brilliant that in some parts I was rooting for the guy.

Tidbit is easy he gives his all in the movies he makes & has a blast doing them. He never seems to have an ego & gives other people credit from the director to whomever he co-stars with. Didn't get a chance to see Jack Reacher but I will pick it up on Blu-ray

What idiot thought that Jack Reacher was a flop? I saw Reacher two weeks after it came out and the theater was completely sold out. Reacher is not only a hit, it's a big hit considering its small budget. Reacher made an impressive 81 million dollars domestically, and an even more impressive 205 million dollars worldwide.

I can't not respect the guy.

No actor will EVER surpass the number of big-name directors on their resume. It's ridiculous.....

It's just Tom fuckin' Cruise

The guy is just 110% in whatever he's doing or what he believes in.
It might not be the best of things if you look at his private life, but I personally only care about his movies and if he is still da bomb, that's because few other actors have his kind of commitment.

I Know I'm nitpicking, but saying Austin Powers Goldmember is a Tom Cruise film, is like saying Vanilla Sky is a Steven Spielberg film.

And really I'm not very attracted to action films...Born on the Fourth of July, Magnolia these are my favorite rolls he's played. And he was awesome in Tropic Thunder!

Reacher

This character was a bit of a departure for Cruise; Reacher being a darker/violence prone person. They tried to sell that through out the film but it felt off. Then, at the end, they achieved that goal, imho. Anyway, it was a good film with a decent/interesting mystery and a cool car chase. I am down for a sequel.

Knight and Day at $261?

Wow then I wish they would make a sequel. That movie is highly underrated.

Tidbit - He works is ass off at everything he does. He earns his money unlike many of the new generation. I watched all of the extras for Ghost Protocol for a second time and it astounds me what his is willing to do and does do.

By the man commits to a role. He's taken on more of hisown stuntwork which I thinks adds to your investment in the character you play. He did all of the stunt drving in Reacher. ALL OF IT!

I can't wait for Oblivion

Despite what people say about his personal life, Tom Cruise is just fun to watch on screen.

Jack Reacher should have been a lot better but sub par writing ruined the movie.

I thought it was a pretty good film. The sniper scene was totally jarring. I never read the books, so being short doesn't bother me. They should just call his character 'Tom Cruise' in every movie anyways, because he's basically the same BAMF in every film. I'd pay top dollar to see him cast as some wimpy guy in a movie just for fun, wouldn't that be awesome to see?
