Tom Cruise may be the tentacle-fighter of Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness

02.03.2011

Guillermo del Toro is slowly clawing his way toward making pet project AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS become reality. And it looks like Tom Cruise will be fighting the sticky insanity.

We've heard Cruise's name associated with the project in the past (he and del Toro had also previously planned a new VAN HELSING movie together), but things have been reasonably quiet lately regarding the inclusion of any actor not named Ron Perlman.

But MTV sat down with James Cameron, who is producing GdT's 3D adaptation of HP Lovecraft's novella. "Tom does want to do the picture," Cameron said. "I don't think we have a deal with him yet, but we're hoping to get that closed soon. Guillermo is madly working on a new draft of the script. Hopefully we'll be shooting by June or July."

Cruise tends to be fussy when selecting projects (alas, not always with the best quality control), but can even he resist working with the talent of del Toro and the Hollywood clout of Cameron? Big Jim's comment sure makes it sound like the paperwork is being drafted...

Lovecraft's chilling story follows an Antarctic expedition and its discovery of a lost civilization, and strange slimy lunacy then occurs.

Extra Tidbit: It's a little bizarre to think that the work of Lovecraft could become mega-budget summer tentpole blockbuster material. But let's be glad it is!

Fuck yes!

Crazy Scientologist or not, Cruise is a hell of an actor people. Get the fuck over yourselves. This kind of collaboration can only lead to great things cinematically.

SHUT THE FUCK UP PEOPLE

Their are two sides to actors. Their on-screens 'business' personas, and their off-screen real-life persona.

Unless this is a fuckin documentary, there's no need to be all 'ooo noo scientology ooo nooooo!' so just quit it already. Religion is religion. Nobody complains when somebody brings jesus into the picture. Christianity and Scientology are no more believeable than the other, neither one has more basis than the other, it's just more people hopped on the bandwagon of Christianity as it's

Thaaat's about it.

Tom is the man, and proved he's still got it from the first half of Knight & Day. However that movie fell apart after that and was a pile of shit, but that wasn't his fault.

Whatever the case... glad to see Cruise back in action baby!

1--An H.P. Lovecraft story is being made into a film, in a PROPER way, because
2--Guillermo Del Toro is doing it,
3--with the power and scope of James Cameron as a magnifying glass, and
4--with a great and talented star for the lead?

Holy HELL am I excited!

It could work

as long as Tom doesn't stop halfway through the film to start preaching about Xenu and engrams.

I have no complaints. Just want it made and want it to rock. I won't read the script either. Have you ever listed all the director's Cruise has worked with? It is amazing. Now he gets to add Del Toro . . .

I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise, but the "Tom Cruise is gay" myth has been put to rest. John Travolta, on the other hand . . .

Travolta I can agree on but think about it. Tom cruise in a fight with long big tentacles. If you still dont get it look up what the japanese do with tentacles in their porn. Then you will get the joke hopefully.

I'm on the fence...

As a die hard HPL fan, I want this movie to succeed well. But I don't want to see it become a "franchise". Imagine "At the Mountains of Madness 2".

You *know* the studios will push for that. Which will just put a taint on the whole thing.

With Cruise attached, it is now more likely to achieve "franchise" status, which makes me not even want to go see it.

Plus, let's consider the character he'll play. I'm guessing it's William Dyer, a GEOLOGY PROFESSOR. I really can not picture

Cruise wouldn't be my pick, but I don't really care! Just get this film made, it is SO important for the future of R-rated horror, and I'm sure it'll gross huge numbers!!!

Cruise could get it financed

With his involvement it might finally get made. I don't think he'd be interfering with del Toro's vision either. As long as Xenu stays out of the picture...

No No NO No No!

This is ALL KINDS of not good.

Having Tom Cruise attached to this would twist the story into something completely unrecognizable all to make it more palatable to the Tom Cruise audience the studios want in the theaters. And considering how wavering that group is as of late means they'll bend Guillermo AND the story even furthermore backwards to placate them.

Think people! If this becomes a blockbuster film the studio has to make sure its as accessible to as many ticket buyers across vast demographics in order to recoup the money that blockbuster budgets require.

End result: Watered down, inferior story molded into the typical formulaic action film, just with "Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft" pasted to opening credits.

OH MY GOD THIS CANNOT BE HAPPENING!!!!

You really think that James Cameron and Del Toro would allow that to happen? True Tom Cruise usually does have control over his projects but lately the guy's movies have been flops. Do you really think the studio will listen to Cruise over Cameron who is coming off of the highest grossing movie ever? Cruise is a fantastic actor no matter the role or movie he is in. I have full faith in Del Toro to deliver a kick ass story and I have faith in Cameron (who I'm not too fond of) in making sure the

I certainly agree that a watered down version of the story will suck. It is my hope that it won't happen, but it's hard to see this not quickly becoming the new "thing"....superhero movies are going to peter out...so now the studios begin adapting all of HPL's works? Could be good...likely will be bad. Like "Brian Yuzna" bad.

Cruise isn't in the position to change anything here. At this point in his career DelToro & Cameron will say "jump" and he'll ask "how high?"

That would be great. I would have never thought of that, but it seems like it would click.

Honestly, screw this, Tommy "Nutball" Cruise and screw a Van Helsing reboot. Guillermo del Toro should resurrect Blade now that Snipes is out of jail.
