Tom Cruise on for All You Need is Kill

12.01.2011

Tom Cruise may not be pumping out the hits like he used to, as in the last three years all he's given us has been KNIGHT AND DAY and VALKYRIE, but I think that' s about to change when MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4 hits this winter.

After that, Cruise is back in ROCK OF AGES and ONE SHOT, and now is adding another film to his list. Warner Bros. has locked him in to start in ALL YOU NEED IS KILL, a strangely titled sci-fi thriller with echoes of GROUNDHOG DAY. Here's the plot from Variety:

"A soldier in a war against aliens finds himself reliving his last day over and over after being killed. Through the training and battles he experiences in these time loops, he becomes a better soldier."

Alright, that actually sounds incredibly awesome. Like leveling up in Call of Duty. How long until he gets to unlock Danger Close and the Noob Toob? Those aliens will be toast then.

But yeah, glad to see Cruise back doing projects like this, and weird title and all, I'm now looking forward to ALL YOU NEED IS KILL.

Extra Tidbit: I wish that when you died, you just got to come back and live your life over with all the knowledge you gained.

So it's like someone went to a studio and the pitch went like this... "Hey. The movie is about one word... With a hyphen... You ready for this? Re-spawning." STUDIO EXEC: "I like it!"

TC is the Man

Good to see Tom getting back in the game. With MI4 this monnth, and then One Shot, this movie (and hopefully Oblivion), it looks like he is truly redefining himself. I really think Tom Cruise never does a bad movie - he is one of those rare actors. Even his not-so-good movies are better than most of the other crap. Cant wait for this.

Funny you mentioned Call of Duty, sounds like this soldier will find out he's trapped as living video-game character with extra/infinite lives and probably wants out.
A definite must see.

All together now!

All you need is kill...bum pa bumpa bum...all you need is kill...bum pa bumpa bum...kill is all you need.
Sorry, seriously though if Liman and Cruise can bring it this will be awesome and the story sounds cool (if slightly reminiscent of 'Source Code"). Intrested to see how it pans out.

Not the biggest fan of Cruise, but he's a great star.

The logic that Cruise hasn't been "pumping out the hits" in recent years has become accepted, but it's not really logical. It was kind of an extension of the tabloid fodder surrounding his War of the Worlds/MI3 promotion breakdown. The fact is, Cruise has often spread his films out across a couple years, and while a couple of his movies may have suffered domestically due to his tarnished image, they were still hits internationally: if he weren't a star, MI:3, KNIGHT & DAY and even VALKYRIE (a

It was kind of an extension of the tabloid fodder surrounding his War of the Worlds/MI3 promotion breakdown. The fact is, Cruise has often spread his films out across a couple years, and while a couple of his movies may have suffered domestically due to his tarnished image, they were still hits internationally: if he weren't a star, MI:3, KNIGHT & DAY and even VALKYRIE (a WWII drama released at Christmastime) wouldn't have crossed $100 mil overseas.

I do agree that a lot of that anti-Cruise backlash has subsided and MI4 is primed for blockbuster status (and probably the best reviews of the franchise), but let's not pretend he ever really stopped being a star, or that he slowed down his output. Yes, a couple of his films under-performed domestically, but the tabloid shit gets taken out of proportion and at this point the whole "Tom Cruise lost his star power" thing is more a myth based on all that gossip rag shit than any kind of factual account of the last half-decade of the man's career.

Anyway...sorry for the rant. Just get kinda tired of seeing those comments on every JoBlo article about Cruise over the past few years because the more that stuff is printed the more it seems to appear to be true even when it's not.
