Trailer and poster for Romeo and Juliet with Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth

Jul. 26, 2013by: Paul Shirey

So, for those of you with wives and girlfriends, I've found the next movie you'll be dragged to, kicking and screaming. It's a little movie called ROMEO AND JULIET starring Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti, Stellan Skarsgard, Ed Westwick, Natascha McElhone, and Kodi Smit-McPhee. The latest adaptation of William Shakespeare's classic tale is going for a more classical approach to the material, rather than the contemporary/fantasy setting of Baz Luhrman's 1996 version starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes.

The pic has got a decent cast and looks like a well made affair, but l think the appeal to this, like many tragic young love stories, will fall to the ladies more so than the gents. And, that's totally fine. Unless you're the gent being dragged to it, of course. I'm perfectly content to let the intended demographic enjoy the hell out of this, while I sit safely on the sidelines. It's to note that the screenplay for this comes from Julian Fellowes, the creator of Downton Abbey, so that could potentially draw some appeal for an extended audience.

Where art thou trailer? 'Tis here!:

Gaze upon thee!:

ROMEO AND JULIET starts the tragic romancin' on September 6, 2013.

I may have some sentimental attachment to Baz Luhrmann's version, but would stop short of calling it a great telling of the Bard's story, since the style (though effective) butchers the play somewhat. Never saw Zefirelli's version.

My favorite adaptation might just be Branaugh's "Much Ado About Nothing." I only watched his "Hamlet" once, which is why I won't claim it.

I don't think any adaptation of this could be better than Baz's version

That is one ugly, unispired poster for such story!

Sure we don't need another retelling and branding it as "the most dangerous love story ever told" with that font and design (#ForbiddenLove, yo!) just smacks of desperation - but I'm very sure Hailee Steinfeld will just slay it in the part. She's talented and oh so lovely.

Ugggh

Horrible poster. Their hair, skin tone and clothing are exactly the same color and texture, more like they are siblings rather than "dangerous" lovers from opposing families. Then there's the font, which makes me think that I'm going to watch another Dylan biopic. Throwing all those actors names over the title is in really poor taste, too. Why does the poster for Spike Lee's version of "Oldboy" exude more class than a poster for Romeo & Juliet?

Extra tidbit: Kenneth Branagh's take on The Bard's Hamlet, especially in an uncut form.

I'm not sure the poster is giving off the right impression.

The poster itself isn't bad, but I feel like it's trying to appeal to the hipster crowd. For some reason it feels like the person who made this poster also made the Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist poster, too... and I'm not sure that's the kind of vibe they want to give off.

But it's been a while since we've had a Romeo and Juliet film, so I'm excited for this regardless! Happy that Hailee Steinfeld is finally getting more roles since True Grit. I felt like she kind of went under the

Snooze

Hopefully there's a twist at the end:-) It looks painfully dull. Plenty of good actors though.
