Uni has Army of Two

10.24.2008

Still looking for that elusive video game that will make a really good movie, Universal has fast-tracked an adaptation of Electronic Arts' third-person shooter "Army of Two." The game, released on 360 and PS3 back in March, follows Elliot Salem and Tyson Rios two mercenaries who get mixed up in a political conspiracy so vast in threatens the world. The game was successful largely due to its cooperative gameplay that featured tasks so complex they were almost impossible to complete without your partner. Universal has brought in Scott Z. Burns, no stranger to military conspiracy action films with THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM, to write the script for the film. Burns, who was upfront with Universal and EA, about never playing video games, also wrote Steven Soderbergh's THE INFORMANT. Universal is looking to get Ao2 in production early in 2009.

Extra Tidbit: EA is already at work on a sequel to the game.

While i was playing this this game i was thinking this would make a damn good movie and hopefully would not get all fucked up...so we'll see...it has a lot of potential.

I've never played the game and know nothing of the storyline, but at least they've got a solid screenwriter lined up.

If the recent superhero movies have taught us anything it's the more you respect the source material the better. Eventually the studios will learn the same is true for movies based on video games.

Why do video game makers always choose names for their characters that sound like porn stars or characters from romantic-horror novels?

well good

The fact that writer hasnt played the game doesn't hurt it at all. It helps. The game was fun but the plot was one of the most laughable attempts at being serious and smart I've ever seen. So I'm not opposed to this, at best this movie will be a silly action-comedy that we'll forget as soon as we walk out of the theatre. Hopefully the actoin is good...

I loved this game. I hope they get the partnership right between the Salem and Tyson. if they can this will be kick ass. And that crazy ass armour they wear as well. Not to mention the whole Back 2 back sequence of the game. it will be a awesome movie

This has fiasco written all over it. Giving a video game to hollywood is like giving a handgun to a four year old.

Statham

well unlike the other films that Statham is suggested for he genuinely looks like the character, they just need to slap a scar on his face

Never played the game, but I did watch a few trailers on YouTube. Looks like a Blackwater-esque premise that might actually be good if they inject some fake real-world politics in it, more "The Kingdom" than "Bourne Identity."

I actually liked this game too.
Could be cool,I thought the story was coherent enough if not stolen from a season of 24.

My first thought is that it will be ruined by the Hollywood need to cast leads in moves where the character has a mask on and 10 minutes in we never see it again? That's the attraction to the character! Not the a-list pretty boy you cast, the character is that mask...To me at least.

Judge Dredd I'm looking at you.

Craptacular!

Universal's idea factory is completely fucked.

Army Of Two is getting developed? The story is barely coherent while playing it. Just how exactly can you stitch it into a movie?

Universal's previous game property was Ha-motherfuckin'-lo. HALO! Which has spawned THREE quadruple platinum selling games, an epic series of novels, and two RPG games - one video, one traditional tabletop.

Peter Jackson was set up to produce the shit out of it, had a capable director (if untried in Hollyweird),

Peter Jackson was set up to produce the shit out of it, had a capable director (if untried in Hollyweird), and the blessing of Microshaft, Bungie, and all other interested parties. Had a solid, hardcore script, awesome previsuals done, super crazy awesome props already made for the Halo 3 'short film' ads.

And Uni walked away.

Good luck with this one.

I never played this game. But yeah, please no Statham. He needs to play something out of the box for once. Like a surgeon, or a stay at home dad of sextuplets. I dunno.

well the gameplay wasnt amazing (hopefully something they'll fix in the sequel) but the story is pretty easy to see as a movie, if they managed to squeeze in a ton of action the no-brainer story could be pretty awesome, especially if they have the bad ass suits they wear in the game. i think Jason Statham is an obvious choice for Tyson, and i think Chris Evans would make a pretty good Salem.

Sweet!!

As long as they keep the witty banter between Salem and Rios going and not devolve it into cheesy comedy I think we can expect a pretty good movie. Also as long as little to no directorial creative freedom is excercised. When peopel go to see a movie based on a video game, they wanna see what happened in the video game on screen. They don't wanna see the story "expanded" into something that no longer fits in the game world.
